OT: NCAA comes down hard on Kentucky

Submitted by darkstar on

Kentucky men's and women's soccer made the unpardonable decision to play an informal scrimmage together against members of the Foo Fighters when the band played Rupp this past May.  As a result "three current men's players, one current women's player and one former men's player, several players will have to sit out two supervised team activities."

Take that you criminals!  In other news Michigan State and Ohio State, among many many others, are still laughing at the NCAA's completely ass-backwards punishments.

I don't think the penalty is harsh enough.  Instead, those that participated should be forced to go to a Foo Fighters concert.

To play devil's advocate ---- regulating and enforcing the amount of organized practices/scrimmages a collegiate team is one of the CORE functions of the NCAA.

Kentucky soccer broke those rules, and thus they are being punished.

Fairly simple case.

Both.  Taking the (likely) position that this was an accident -- it's Kentucky soccer, after all -- it would still make it possible for less accidental things to happen in the future.  Alabama would have a rock band come to Tuscaloosa every day during the no-contact period so that they could "accidentally" supervise their football players during an "impromptu" scrimmage.

Sure, and in the event that happened then by all means drop the hammer.  But it was clearly an accident and it's just like the NCAA to blow out of proportion a small mistake while ignoring massive issues in front of them because that would cut into the billion dollars they clear a year.

Exactly. 4 people should not be allowed to play pickup soccer whenever they feel like, especially against a random collection of amateurs.  This would have given Kentucky a huge advantage as other athletes across the country would not be able to find 4 amateurs to play against 1 time during the off season.

The devil hardly needs an advocate. In any case, this is really far more about the silliness of the NCAA's bureaucracy in that this nothing event required an actual penalty, as minor as it actual is. If the NCAA were truly serious about said "core" function, it would've long cracked down on the farce that is the 20-h limit on team activities.

Yeah, too bad there's no Kentucky version of the freep to investigate this skullduggery and come up with more chicanery comitted by the coaches and players.  I wonder if their soccer coaches are from a "holler" down yonder?  Although, this did happen in Kentucky so I'm guessing most involved are from a holler.  Maybe the coaches are yankees and that's what prompted the school to turn themselves in, in an effort to bring back "southern spread soccer" over "yankee 3 kicks and a cloud of dust soccer".

One of these days, the NCAA will stop being a pretender and actually punish rulebreakers.  In the meantime, it will take the best of you to remain patient.

I'll see myself out...

"several players will have to sit out two supervised team activities"  Hmm, does that mean they can fulfill the penalty by sitting out two practices?

Does the NCAA even know Kentucky basketball exists?   They punish their soccer team for liking Foo Fighters, but their basketball team gets paid more than the Foo Fighters???
