On second viewing, not as frustrating. The team made some (big) mistakes at key junctions, which is why they lost. These are correctable. Big glaring issues -

1) Defense handling a scrambling QB

2) Shea needs to know to throw it away and read coverages/call an audible

3) OL Pass Pro

Need to add slant passes and screen passes. 

Does Harbaugh have trust in Shea to change the play at the line? The amount of times that we could have gained 10-15 yards off a slant pass was unbearable to watch. 

The first screen pass came with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter. That’s pretty damn embarrassing. 

I do agree, though, with the points in the original post. This game wasn’t as bad as the first time I saw, stupid penalty’s really did hurt us.

The defense made some great plays but they’d always let ND off the hook on third down. Very frustrating game. Felt like ND got very lucky on a couple Hail Mary bombs and unfortunate penalties for M. If a couple plays had gone just a bit differently Michigan would have won that game.

I think we clearly beat them if we didn't have so many mental errors. We bailed ND out on their first two scoring drives and gave them the momentum. We also shot ourselves in the foot a few times offensively. Yes, their D was effective, but we win that game without the stupid mistakes and penalties. This team needs to "learn" how to win.

And don't get me started on how lucky Winbush was...yeah he ran well, but almost every pass of his was a prayer or poorly thrown. If I am a ND fan, I am more concerned about their QB play than ours.

Was going to post this exact thing. I didn't realize it live but that was almost certainly going for 6. 

I actually feel quite a bit better about the offense after watching these. Still have some serious pass protection issues to fix but I think we were a lot closer to a decent offensive game than it seemed live.

Wait. You mean people may have overreacted Saturday night into Sunday?

 

My personal favorites are those who blame everything on coaching, then when you point out guys in position to make plays and not making them respond that it's player development, which is coaching.

 

Coaching is why Hawkins dropped 2 interceptions, why Gil whiffed on a sack, etc.

The over-the-top criticism of Runyan is unwarranted.  He wasn't great, but he seemed no worse than anyone else on that line - especially JBB and Ruiz.  Our entire line seemed to be moving at 3/4 the speed of ND defensive line, but Runyan sticks out since a lot of stunts looped around his side.  It seems like a narrative of "Runyan sucks!" has snowballed to the point where everyone is jumping on that bandwagon, and folks need to CHILL 'cause it's doing no good at all.

I don’t know man. I’ve watched the game almost 3 times now, and he sticks out as the primary cause of most of the major play breakdowns. 

Many times I watched a play full speed, and then went back to diagnose where the breakdown occurred. It wasn’t always Runyan, but he was definitely the weakest link on the line. 

I agree that the personal attacks on him should not be happening, but he played very poorly IMO. 

By contrast, I actually thought Higdon did a pretty solid job in pass pro. There was the one pressure he allowed up the middle, but I think that was more on Ruiz because Higdon was trying to release into a route when Ruiz allowed a guy to go right by him. 

Long story short, if there is anyone else who seems plausible at LT, give him a shot.

Extremely frustrating how much time we spent in ND territory with no points to show for it. Some was unfortunate (Gentry dropped TD pass, Perry guaranteed touchdown screen batted down, and botched FG snap), some was poor decision-making (Shea running backward out of field goal range), and some was poor playcalling (PA on 2nd and goal on the three-yard line?). Very frustrating, but fixable. I actually came away from the offense video feeling much better than I did on Sat night. The playcalling was fine considering the pass blocking issues. I think my perception was probably tainted by the early ND scores. 

I also got the impression that Higdon had an okay, but not great game. We will run at will against the next few teams. Let's fix the pass blocking now.

I don't think calling play action on 2nd and goal is bad.  It's easy to say it's bad after it fails, but if they had scored everyone would have said it was a great call.  My guess is they figured they had 2 more plays to bang it in if the pass was incomplete.

They should have scored on the play before, but Ruiz missed his block on either the LB or the safety who tackled at the 2.

Higdon was decent.  It looked like he missed a couple of cuts in the first half.
