We will improve

Submitted by Apureidiot on

I know I will get a lot of flak for the opening statement, but I don't know how I will put it.

Gentry's drop was reminiscent of some of Butt's drops.

Against ND, we have successfully run a variety of plays. Last year, we could not even throw for life.

We were able to successfully run against the interior ND DL, and our running backs were pretty darn good.

Ambry Thomas is a baller.

ND is overall a better team in continuity. We shouldn't be ashamed to lose to them when their squad has more players that know how to win. In fact, I think our O-Line and defense will improve significantly, and we will net significant wins this year as well.

Most people would not agree with me, but this looks a lot like the 2015 Utah game.

I hope I could see Michigan win now that I'm attending school here.

I didn't think they'd go undefeated a few years back, but they did.

If Wimbush and Boykin stay healthy, and they get a productive Williams back, that offense will be tough for everyone on their schedule to stop (they get Stanford and FSU at home).

And their defense isn't too shabby.

They can afford one close loss and still make the playoffs, imo.

This is crazy, i am not sure if this defense will be able to stop lewrky. he will run on them and continue to convert third downs throughout the first half and they will put the game away, while our offense does nothing cuz MSU will come out with their hair on fire and we continue to look lost. Yesterday proved to me that we still dont have a win culture at michigan and we dont know how to coach our team to come out for big games. we are going to lose to all our rivals yet again aand most likely we drop either wisconsin or psu.

It's amazing. I've been hearing Michigan fans assert with absolute certainty for a full decade that MSU has a crap OL or crap QBs or crap HCs or crap RBs or crap LBs or crap everything for a decade, and by now it's nothing less than cognitive dissonance to assume out of the gate that anybody on MSU "will be leaving early on a cart" or via any other metaphor.

I wonder if this attitude also permeates Schembechler Hall. If it does, it's not surprising that Sparty has had our number since 2008 spanning three coaching staffs.

Since I had to watch the game with a group of ND fans, I decided to take another look last night....and it still amazes me how many mental errors they made. For all the problems we had Saturday night, we should have won that game. The penalties and bonehead plays in the first half were unreal. (Although, its become a hallmark of Harbaugh's Michigan teams to keep making mental errors). However,  it's worth noting that the offense at least moved the ball on a few drives that ate some clock. Not great by any means, but a marked improvement. Shea had 20 completions and Dylan 4 for 250 yards passing. The only game last year where we had 20 completions was Peters against S. Carolina (20 of 44 for 186 yards). Most games, we had under 15 completions and under 200 yards passing (under 150 yards a lot). So our QB play has improved, and it appears, so have the WRs (Nico looks good).

So the house isn't quite on fire at the moment. Yes, there are STILL o-line issues and the play calling is questionable, but this "might" have been a case of an offense with a lot of new starters getting used to each other under the lights and on the road in South Bend in the season opener. I'm glad we had this early road test. It's a wake up call for sure, but IF they clean up the mental errors and the O-Line can improve with more time....we can compete against the likes of MSU, PSU, Wisconsin and OSU. Now, we've been saying that a lot the last few years, but it seemed different on Sat night. They reminded me of Harbaugh's first year around mid season before Rudock went on a tear. There are some signs this "could" turn around. But they need to make the mental leap...maybe its confidence, coaching, etc...but, we could have won that game. Now, they must show that they can. These kids don't know how to win yet. (The coaching staff might not either).

The same 2015 team that lost to Michigan state and got plastered by Ohio State? Shit I hope that’s not what’s going to happen this year. Didn’t that Defense give up a shitload of yards to Indiana and Minnesota? I said it last night and I stick by it, this team is still soft like last year, if you punch them in the mouth they don’t know how to react.

Meh, I really don't think that this defense would get shredded the way Durkin's did in 15, and if our starting QB goes down we probably have a better option than RS Freshman Speight, and don't forget that the MSU game that year took place before Rudock had his "renaissance". Plus MSU is not nearly as good this year as they were in 15.

The fans who thought this would be anything other than a close game and probable loss were delusional.  ND was a top ten team last year and they returned 16 starters.  They are most likely headed for the playoff.  The O line situation is infuriating, but the rest of the team looked pretty good.

We're going to get plastered by OSU this year, but we have a decent shot to beat everyone else on the schedule.

Ohio State is the 2nd best football program in the country.  They've demonstrated that they will do literally anything to win, including keeping a coach who destroyed evidence in a domestic violence investigation. Until we start playing by the same rules, which I hope we don't, Michigan is just not in a position to compete with a program like that.

No, but you're insane if you don't think OSU's complete lack of integrity has not fueled their success.  Jim Tressel was literally rigging raffles to benefit top recruits and setting up his players with fake jobs. Urban Meyer harbored a domestic abuser for years and paid no penalty. Do you think keeping those guys around has helped OSU?  I do.

I mean Lloyd Carr won a lot of games and Bo won a lot of games and had integrity. There is an utter failure of the staff right now to coach up players and recruit which has nothing to do with integrity. How do you not get instate tackles like Devonte Dobbs, Logan Brown, and Justin Davis that we need right now.

How do you not get instate tackles...: You don’t get top OL recruits when you have a consistent reccord of putting out shitty ass lines. If you’re a top OL prospect and you want to go to the NFL do you go to Michigan or do you go to Wisconsin?

I love Michigan, and I’ve loved the institution my whole life. Michigan education landed me a great job, Michigan doctors corrected my birth defect so I could have the ability to walk, and I have fond memories watching football games with my late father and grandparents. However, if I was offered an academic full ride to Michigan and to Harvard, I would’ve taken the Harvard scholarship and not felt one bit of guilt for it, because it would it’d be more likely that I’d be successful.

This isn’t a failure of Harbaughs inability to charm a kid and his parents, or put in effort. It the inability to field a decent OL in the last decade, which tells the recruits that you’re likely not going to have a professional career in football if you go to Michigan.

With Harbaugh it's ALWAYS a handful of plays.  Or just one. Doesn't matter. He can't win big games.

He beat Wisconsin at home with a team that had a record number of NFL players. That's his claim to fame in over 3 years at Michigan.

No matter, the outcome is ALWAYS the same. Underachievement. Wait till next year.

We won’t get plastered by OSU. That’s far too easy a death. The football gods won’t allow it. In the words of Bane, “your punishment must be more severe.”

We’ll come out again at 7-4 having nothing but pride to play for, we’ll play above our heads for 2 quarters and then OSU will slowly but surely work it’s way back into the game, win the fourth quarter, and we’ll lose it on something like three picks in OSU’s territory in the fourth, twice in their red zone. Or something like getting OSU to 4th and 25, stopping them wins the game, and then we watch Haskins skate circles around our defense as he scrambles 60 yards on a broken play for the go ahead TD with under 1 min to go. But of course not before running 10-15 yards backward first.

We’ll lose in some soul crushing fashion again because the gods are a sadistic, masochistic bunch of fuckers when it comes to Michigan football.

I’m just tired of being disappointed season after season. You hear the hype, but the product is just missing something it seems. I honestly thought we would win this game, and our o-line was dominated. We better improve, or else this season will look and feel a lot like last season.

Our defense seems to be pretty good, but we need the offense to sustain drives and score points. We scored 17 last night but it felt more like 7.

I’m hopeful this game turns out to be more like the Utah game with Rudock, than the Florida game last season. We have to improve, in coaching and in our technique.

Im afraid this season is going to be like last season, just want to be proven wrong. Go Blue.

Listen, man. It's year four. This is Harbaugh's team. He's had enough time to put his stamp on the program, and he has everything he needs for elite-level performance. We just got through eight months of hype about how much the offense has improved, how the O-line is leaps and bounds better than it was last season, how the new-look offensive coaching staff is a major upgrade, and how the revamped S&C program has transformed the team physically. And yet, we still saw the same issues that plagued the team last season, and the offensive line looked just as bad as it did last year (worse, in some respects). If this isn't the year when everything falls into place, then I'm having difficulty believing that it ever will.

First of all, I never said Harbaugh should be fired. Second of all, Dabo Swinney was a complete unknown who took a second-tier program and single-handedly elevated it into the first-tier. Harbaugh came in with the hype of a rockstar savior who was going to rescue our formerly first-tier program from the third tier where it had been languishing for far too long. He may have brought it into the second tier, but in year four, that falls far short of what we expected. And we've been absent from the first tier for so long that it's fair to question whether we even belong there anymore.

All of this downfall and MSU rise BEGAN when tressell beat us consistently, then locking us out of Ohio. And then Dantini began to get alot of guys wed normally get. Before your first bad reflex is to say it's ridiculous...well, Ohioans know the importance of these rivalries and what's at stake especially living there. Instead we have players scattered from the south and west and only recently Harbaugh is going hard back into Ohio. Not a coincidence Bo's teams had more Ohioans than anyone else.

Us Ohio fans aren't sad at all. Winning solves all problems. I'd suggest you try it, but clearly that won't be an option with the state of your football program. At least you UM fans are still in contention for the national championship in ethics and SAT scores! My congrats.

I know you’re trying to get an angry reaction but I truthfully only feel pity for you. You don’t play for Ohio State and you aren’t a coach, so why are you bragging and why do you think we will be personally offended when none of us have any control over the performance of the team? I’m sorry you have an unfulfilling life and live vicariously through teenagers  :/
