Two Prevalent Responses to Last Night's Loss

I'm sure I'm the minority here, but I don't think all hope is gone, YET.  Obviously our o-line is the biggest issue, as it has been for the past several seasons, and it's apparent that coaches know this (short quick passes, screens, roll outs).  Knew that ND was gonna come out amped and drive down the field and score the first drive with the crowd behind them.  Defense really hunkered down in the second half and made adjustments, just too little too late given our offense not rising to the occasion.

Biggest thing is we need those 50/50 plays to go our way, and I don't think any of them did last night.  First game of the year, non conference opponent.  In the grand scheme of things this game is a measuring stick for us to see where we are at.  Hopefully these next two weeks our guys can fine tune the issues and be ready to bring a better product to the table for B1G play, or else it will be a long season.

I mean what other thing are you supposed to do?  Hit the panic button, scream the sky is falling, etc etc?  Yeah obviously there are several issues that need addressed.  I never said everything was rainbows and butterflies, but after losing the first game of the year by 7 against not only a rival opponent but ranked top 15 I'm not going to wash the whole season away.  Still lots of time to improve, or collapse if that's what you're more into.

I think last nights loss was expected... The “savior “ Shea Patterson showed ABSOLUTELY NOTHING... It was like a rerun of the past 5 years ..The problem is and will always be the O line, untill we can get that fixed we will continue to be average ... Not to mention we should be playing CUPCAKES the first 2/3 weeks

Chuck, I hate to admit this (I lie -- I'm enjoying it a little), but your comments are consistently more logical and (above all) literate than those posted by all but a few of my fellow M fans on this board.  No matter how much I remain emotionally attached to my alma mater and its football program, I see little evidence that my ostensible comrades enjoy the kind of intellectual superiority they imagine they possess, especially compared to thoughtful, careful critics like you.  I appreciate your comments, and I hope you will continue to participate in conversations here.  You put to shame all the sophomoric, crude, vulgar, dyspeptic, self-congratulating, misspelling-and-grammatically-challenged people who assume they are exemplary products of the fine university to which they, and I, feel such deep loyalty.

You can always tell when someone actually knows what they saw by thier post. In most cases drunk fans just scream a bunch of dribble and blame the QB. MarcusRay97 is a drunk fan with no idea wtf he is talking about. If you thought Patterson showed nothing then you have no idea what happened last night.

Marcus I think you are flat wrong here. Watching the game I saw the QB throw on target while moving in the pocket for much of the game. Quick strong passes that haven't been part of this team for some time. Look forward to seeing improvement next week.

Same comments have been spewed about Matt stafford.  When the Lions run game ave just above 2 ypc and converted about 0% on 3rd and short rushing situations it’s not the QB.  It’s just very convenient to scapegoat a QB when the offensive pieces aren’t functioning.  It’s a machine.  People need to remember that Shea hasn’t played in a game for almost 11 months.   He will be better, already played better in situations than last seasons QBs.  I like an early test to gauge where we are at.  The gross overexaggeration to 1 game is stupid.  Funny how people love to use “Steel sharpens steel” until they get cut.

I'm not losing hope. The OL is still the biggest issue and, if we have a good coaching staff (and I believe we do), barring injury, they will improve and adjust. Good coaches' teams improve as the year goes on.  I believe they will get better.

Patterson showed me that he is a very capable QB, given time to throw and decide.  We left a lot of points on the board last night and they came back and bit us.  I'm not giving up. It's too early.

When opponents O line gets run over the QB always seems to make stuff happen. Michigan seems to take a sack, fumble or just flat out don't do anything. Been that way for years.

The opposing QB steps up in the pocket and makes a throw or takes off for 15 yards.  Our QB’s always try to go backwards.  Take Devin Gardner vs ND in 2013 I believe for an extreme example.  Ran all the way back into his own end zone then tried to throw it and it ended up a pick six.  Just throw the ball out of bounds and move on to the next play.

I would love to get several things ironed out over the course of the season and make it to the CFP to face that nd team again, on a neutral field with non acc refs.

Gentlemen, I confess that I am an Ohio resident (only about 1.5 hours from Ann Arbor) and lifelong Ohio State fan. I am not here to throw fiery darts at UM teams or fans. And if anyone can understand futility and frustration it is an Ohio State fan who endured 2-10-1. Plus, I really like John Beilein. And I can actually have reasonable conversations with a co-worker who graduated from Ohio State but is a UM fan. I still don't get that.

Unlike many OSU fans and undoubtedly many UM fans (who probably rejoice when Ohio State loses an out of conference game), I wanted UM to win because 1) I hate Notre Dame, and 2) I think that the B1G benefits when the league as a whole does well in OOC games.

A lot of you are overreacting. Mark it down. Don't discount your team after a loss in a tough road game against a probable top 10 team in the first game of the year. Your defense is stout and will keep you in games even when the offense struggles. But I do think your offensive schemes look a bit outdated. And my Lord, I could do better time management than Harbaugh.

Our defense is a known entity by other teams and is not stout.  You saw the grave they dug in the first quarter?  Every game we give up 1 or 2 drives to decent teams and we have to play from behind until the defense adjusts.  How about the defense adjusts at the start of the game?

The bottom line is we expected that O-line to be at least average under the new coach and it's just as bad as last year.  We also expected competency in the clock management and disciplined players who don't hurt the team with retarded penalties.

Year 4 and the basics just aren't there...that is why we are alarmed after the very first game.
