What is wrong with this entire program?

Submitted by UMxWolverines on

We have been laying eggs for literally decades in big games. MSU gets better results than us with lower rated recruits. So does Wisconsin.

I'm on a small vacation right now, and I wonder why I've wasted the last few hours watching this. I used to be the biggest Michigan fan anyone knew as a kid, but I'm now 24 as of 3 days ago, and I haven't seen us do shit since I was 10. Even that year we lost to a 6-4 OSU and Notre Dame coached by Charlie Weis.

I've been texting back and forth with my uncle who has had season tickets since the 70s, he says this is the last year for tickets and I don't really blame him. This stuff is too predictable and I don't get that many free Saturday's anymore with my job.

We hired the hottest coach in football in 2014...Why is it no matter who coaches here they can't get results? I just don't get it. Nobody on our team has looked hyped to play, just like MSU last year. Is it mentality? They expect to just waltz in and win without preparing?

We all expected better..... Were we really 14th ranked, not as good as the 12th ranked Irish?   Guess what.... The Irish were better than us, we clearly aren't the 14th best team in the country. Note Dame would have stomped stomped penn state & sparty, who each squeaked by unranked opponents.   It is disappointing that we continue to look so lackluster, but to be honest, we let two easy interceptions slip thru our hands & ND scored 14pts as a direct result.  This wasn't the game wewanted to see, but 14 lost to 12, it isn't nearly as bad as it feels.    I hate the lack of a dominant team as much as everyone else, but the B10 season has yet begun, we will be a factor..... We will also beat at least one of our rivals & we will get better.

Onward!

Come Nov. 24th Ohio St. will run you guys off the field.  Nick Bosa will be licking his chops.  Ohio St. would beat Notre Shame by 3-4 touchdowns.

This is all on Harbaugh. No energy, no heart, the playcalling was terrible, the offensive line is the worst and clock management was so bad I couldn't believe how slow we were walking around. They might as well huddled up.

With all due respect, Bo had many teams with less raw talent than Harbaugh, yet his squads almost always came out with an intensity that I haven't seen under subsequent M coaches.  Sure they lost games, but I don't remember the continual a-kicking like we've been subjected to.  Something is seriously wrong in this program and I don't know if it can recover.

In terms of talent, M and ND were similarly matched, though ND's kids came out juiced and ready to play.  Our kids looked lost and completely starry eyed other than a couple of stud D players.  When good teams like 'bama or losu get behind, they nearly always find a way back.  Not M.  Our kids always look dejected and miserable.

I still don't get Jimmy.  In school he was a firecracker and a bit of a punk.  He was always a tough competitor and now he just seems out of it.  It's as though he's in the NFL and individual games don't seem to matter.  He doesn't seem to care that under his tenure the teams have sucked and can't beat quality opponents.  Maybe he should be coaching in the MAC?

Trying to be more positive......The Good

1)  Patterson is an upgrade.  I liked what I saw in McCaffrey.

2)  Thomas on kick returns.....dude runs HARD.

3)  Defense strong in second half.  Good coaching adjustment.

4)  Great edge rush from Winovich and Gary.  Just crushing the ND tackles.  Sadly, Wimbush would just step up and then run around out DTs.

5)  Offense looked simpler.

The Bad

1)  Still no offensive identity.  Moving from Shotgun and zone blocking to 22 Package Power and back.  I hate this.

2)  We REALLY miss Mo Hurst.  Our ends would push the QB forward in the pocket and then he would run for 20 yards.  The DTs could not hold their lanes.  With the loss of Hurst, this defense may not be as good as last year.

3)  The offensive line is still our weakest unit.  Too many pressures / sacks and an inability to generate 4 yards a carry.  This forces us into throwing a bunch of 3 to 5 yard passes which will get us nowhere.

4)  Coaching.  Notre Dame's  coaches did a great job of exploiting all of the weaknesses of our defense.  Great play calling.

5)  Still no playmakers on offense.

6)  Shea looked very annoyed with guys on the offense.  This could be a really good thing or a really bad thing.

7)  CBs had a hard time covering tall wide receivers and tight ends.  Some of ND's biggest plays were jump balls that could have been INTs.

played poorly-ish.  had every 50-50 break go against us (2 dropped ints = 2 ND TDs) and the ref breaks went completely against us.  3rd TD had a terrible PI against Ross (no hold plus in the backfield, plus before the ball was thrown), terrible roughing the passer, blatant hold on the TD.  Last FG was .3 seconds after the play clock ended.  Injuries.  Still had a chance to pull it out in the end.

This game is not indicative of what you say.  Couple it with the past couple of years with a lot of near misses and bad breaks (injured QBs last year, in particular) and I can understand why you have lost perpective.

Wow, people are ready to jump off of the ledge.  I, too, am frustrated.  What I am going to do is reserve judgment.  If they get better as the year goes along and respond to this with the right attitude (coaches included), then hopefully we can look at this as a basement of sorts.  That said, it does feel like another dong punch into the hopeless abyss of eternal mediocrity.  I am tired of feeling excited every year to keep experiencing this shit.

Patterson looks amazing. His accuracy on the run was truly a spectacle I haven’t seen at Michigan since...?

The Oline was the problem: Patterson was either on the run or getting sacked pretty much every play. He can’t make perfect decisions all the time, but Oline has to give him a second to make a decision. His release was quick and his decision making was mostly solid.

Im sure App St QB is great. Could also be that Penn St came out flat?

I have no desire to watch Michigan vs Western. Haven't said that about Michigan football ever. Been watching since I was 7 years old.

After 4 years the product on the field stinks.  We're paying $8 million bucks a year for constant mental mistakes & watching out team get constantly outcoached.  Nagging issues with the O-line...in year 4?  How the fuck does that happen?

I'm starting to have doubts and starting to reflect on the criticisms of JH that I've brushed aside.

Look at what Dantonio has done with Lewerke (he was horrid his first year) and yet we have to constantly import people.  Who the hell is the QB whisperer here?  Looks like Mork to me!

I don't even care about watching anymore Michigan football this year.

I think the lack of  urgency, etc, is the fact that none of these guys are afraid of Harbaugh.    I remember Bo chewing players a new asshole over missed blocks, etc.  And while I think he is a coach not to be admired, Saban does the same thing.

I waited until this morning to post. I've had season tickets for 30 years and have gone to more spring games, home games, away games and bowl games than I can remember. Last night I did something I never have before - I changed the channel during the game and never went back. Maybe the last ten years of mediocrity did it, maybe it was the apathy that surfaced during the last Hoke year raising it's ugly head. I am done, off the hype train. I will go to games, cheer the players and sing 'The Victors' but it will never be the same. I am finally broken and it makes me sad.
