1. Maryland, Ohio State, the others…What do we do?

Maryland's bully culture got a player killed. Ohio State kept Zach Smith for a decade of spousal abuse, lied about it, and destroyed evidence, then did somersaults to not fire him. How many things flew under Joe Rexrode's nose at MSU? Favorite thing about Iowa is they'll periodically drop MSU shade over Chris Rucker playing right after they got out of jail. Indiana fired Kevin Wilson because Indiana has integrity. Please institute the DeBord Rule.
We need a new NCAA. We need to empower the players. We need some kind of standard for who gets to be a strength coach.
2. The Big Ten East

OTHER THAN THAT Mrs. Lincoln, how's the division? Indiana Al Borges'd themselves, Penn State lost a looot of guys but has the Heisman candidate at QB, Michigan State wasn't as bad as 2016 or as good as 2017 but might be better by 2018. Maryland collapses. Ohio State skates.
3. The Big Ten West

Wisconsin has the top six offensive linemen in the conference, a perfect nose, two more years of Jonathan Taylor, Hornibrook, and possibly some serious wide receiver problems. Northwestern is a front seven. Nebraska is in Year Zero. Purdue is interesting but not good. Iowa?

Staff picks for wins/losses on the season. At Ohio State is a clearly troubling prospect now that they got to keep the guy who should have been fired. At Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Penn State, at Northwestern are the losable game.

With all of the absurdity shown by the other Big Ten east programs, I have gained even more respect for the integrity of the Indiana program. To fire their most successful/promising football coach in decades because of the strong (yet not ironclad) indications of impropriety speaks volumes. Unfortunately, hiring DeBord lost them much regard in terms of competency, but at least not ethics (aside from fiducial responsibility in paying him).

See, you'd think that. But a couple very good buddies of mine are Iowa grads. And they hate UM.
More than Wisconsin/Nebraska/Minnesota despite the natural rivalries.
More than Penn State despite Sandusky.
More than Ohio State despite Urban condoning spousal abuse for a decade.
More than Sparty despite decades of enabling child molestation and sexual violence against coeds (and at least one canine).
No, they hate UM, because "They're so damn arrogant."

I'll bet it's really tough to make a podcast with 3 people. I think I even heard Brian say "stop talking over each other" LOL. You guys do a great job, don't worry about it.

You guys are great, but this podcast, as someone stated earlier, was 'too much talking over each other'. Hope you guys take this as constructive criticism. Also hope your health is better and can't wait to hear your thoughts throughout the season. Go Blue!

I think there's a little too much roughness on Rexrode. A cursory google search shows him revealing the worst details of the Glenn Winston case, and holding the program accountable in that instance.. While it's possible he was too cozy with Izzo to see his faults (his last column at the LSJ hinted at that), I'm not feeling the vitriol shown on this site.

I listened to this and it genuinely bummed me out. That’s what it absolutely should have done as well. I have always wondered how long I could keep watching football knowing how toxic and outright harmful it is for a lot of people. The collateral damage of college football seems to be more and more obvious. To say nothing of the young men whose lives are changed and sometimes shortened by this sport for my enjoyment. A full ride scholarship is a great thing but not if you have a hard time stringing sentences together at 40. I know there will be a time when I stop watching and I think it will be sooner rather than later, but that doesn’t help either. How do we make this sport better and more equitable for the young men who play it and those who have their lives negatively effected by their proximity to a sport that pretends to be about the betterment of the “student athlete” but is mostly about lining the pockets of the previous generation while they whistle “Glory Days”

I feel bad for Seth. You guys constantly interrupt or talk over everything he says. When he occasionally gets a word in it seems you bend over backwards to disagree or be dismissive... Giving credit for his “Patty” joke to someone else? I’m starting to wonder if this is all a bit? Did I miss the shitting on Seth joke?

100% agree. I also mentioned this in the Offensive Podcast but I think Seth is a great addition to the podcast when he gets more than 2 consecutive seconds to speak.

Came to the comments to see if anyone else said it. All 3 podcasts Seth can’t get a word in, and when he does, he gets interrupted before he can even finish a sentence. Let the man speak!
Seth’s also so polite about it, letting it go, and not trying to go back to his point when the topic has changed.

It stinks that these things have gone on at OSU and MSU and we’re still miles behind them on the field. I feel like us coming down on them for it all is punching up. That’s probably the wrong way to look at it, but there it is.

With all due respect, I find it truly remarkable how dismissive the authors of the podcast are as it relates to Michigan State. You would think that in the backdrop of Michigan's poor record against the team in East Lansing over the last decade that they would learn to give MSU the benefit of doubt by now, rather than marginalizing a team that won 10 games and beat Michigan [again] in 2017.
Conversely, even as a devout Spartan fan, I am not too proud to admit to Michigan's elite defense (which is likely to be even more devastating in 2018). Additionally, I both appreciate and relate to the well-founded excitement brewing in Ann Arbor --- especially with most of Michigan's starters returning and a high profile quarterback now under center.
What I mean to say is that I am not so foolish or closed-minded [read: homer] NOT to give credit where credit is due. Michigan will be a fun team to watch this year. In fact, Michigan fans have every right to feel optimistic heading into 2018, as all the pieces just might finally be in place this year --- pieces that could catapult Michigan into the CFP. Without a doubt, the sky is the limit for this Michigan team. However, to denigrate, marginalize and dismiss a Michigan State team that won 10 games last year is both disingenuous and shoddy journalism and is a disservice to the integrity your blog's followers.
Just my two cents.

The "marginalizing" of MSU comes from the "actions speak louder than words" department of everyone who is not a pathologically partisan MSU fan. "Your" school is all talk and no significant action when it comes to the concept of a football and basketball player being a "student athlete". Barrett was speaking for "you" as well as OSU when he stated "I didn't come here to play school". Here, the fact of the matter is, Jim Harbaugh receives plenty of criticism from Michigan partisans who seem to prefer that Michigan be that school too. The truth is that Jim has very likely moved way past the "winning is the only thing" mantra that many clearly prefer. And while I would thoroughly enjoy Michigan winning more I am most delighted with the direction Harbaugh is taking this program. The building of character remains the most important thing that happens in an interscholastic athletic program...and here, Jim Harbaugh has lapped the field.

The bits about morals and ethics is fair game. In no way should any of that be glossed over. But, I was referring to football and football only in this case [keeping the topic light]. The point I was trying to make is that admittedly, there are few things I detest more than Michigan football. Yet, at the same time, I am not incapable of objectively respecting the program and recognizing its potential for excellence in 2018 and the talent that exists on the roster. The authors of the podcast belittled almost every skill player on the MSU roster --- starting with the receivers and ending with the quarterback, chalking up Michigan State's success to inclement weather and dumb luck. I find that to be egregiously disingenuous.

MSU will be fine this year, but they also went 6-1 in one-score games last year and had a margin of victory of under a TD. ND, another 10-win team, won by an average of 17 points a game. So I like to think people are simply point tonight out that maybe their #11 ranking is a bit of a smokescreen.

And you might be right. If MSU (and Michigan's for that matter) respective rankings turn out to be fraudulent, we will soon find out. I personally think that both teams are positioned appropriately based on 2017 MSU's record and returning starters and Michigan's overall talent and of course the defense.

A lot of advanced stat guys don't love MSU either, and are sort of baffled at what they did last year. (I've heard the term 'smoke and mirrors' used by Bill Connelly, for one.)
It doesn't mean they're not good, but the data shows a likely regression to the mean.

This was by far your worst podcast ever. I am generally a big fan and can’t wait to listen, but this was sorely disappointing. A ton of yelling and talking over each other combined with poorly thought out takes. You are better than this.
In regards to Maryland, a couple of quick points. There are three separate issues with this case that you addressed: the kids running, the hour wait after the seizure, and the bully coaching. These are in fact three very separate issues that you treat, wrongly, as one. It was stated by Ace that colleges are literally running kids to death. This is far from true, as was pointed out on your podcast and quickly tossed aside. Almost no college athletes die from excessive exercise, they almost all die from an undiagnosed health issue, usually related to the heart. We do not see this in the pros, not because they are paid or have unions, but because those health issues are usually diagnosed before they are a pro. Make no mistake, they work as hard or harder in pro workouts and it is not unusual for pro medical staffs to take the athletes back to ice them and give them an IV because of their workload. Of course the pros have medical staffs right there for all workouts.
absolutely no one thinks they worked these kids out too hard or harder than another college and this issue has zero to do with the bully coaching.
The hour wait is far, far more significant and you barely touched it. And where was the medical staff during this time? Have we actually seen an autopsy to know if there was another medical condition?
The bully coaching is another bad issue, but completely separate from the amount of training they did, and mosfly separate from the hour wait. I have seen no reports that he was bully coaching him during this hour.
