OT: Iowa Student Mollie Tibbetts' body found

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa 68 on

Sorry to have to pass this on, but I was asked about this by FauxMo a couple of weeks ago, as I live about 27 miles from Brooklyn, IA.

Mollie's body was found Tuesday, it's been confirmed by her father and the head of law enforcement, but they're not giving out many details, as the investigation is still ongoing.

She was 20 years old, and a student at Iowa.  My daughter is 17 and plans to go to Iowa, so I don't have to tell you that this hits REALLY close to home.

Hug your children if you have them.  My heart is aching for Mollie's family, and the small towns in our area.  We're all feeling the loss.  She could have been my daughter.

This is an interesting take. Let's correct the mistruths:
Undocumented immigrants receive 1. emergency medical care and 2. schooling. They do not qualify for: 1. Medicaid; 2. Medicare; 3. Social; 4. ACA; 5. SSI; 6. CHIP; or 7. SNAP. That second list corresponds to benefits that citizens generally receive.

Also, undocumented immigrants generally pay quite a bit in taxes, so your use of taxpayer should probably be changed to citizen.

While you are fully entitled to your opinion that one illegal alien is representative of all illegal aliens and thus, if one illegal alien is a monster and a murderer, all illegal aliens need to be deported, I don't believe you should spread lies as a means of justifying your view.

You and I will get negged for this but there really is a problem with our society in sensationalizing stories like this.  Because every photogenic person who goes missing gets blasted all over networks like CNN people think the world is more dangerous than ever when in reality it's far safer now than practically ever before.  This has huge negative consequences, like increased police funding(even though crime is down), sheltering kids indoors, and a general attitude that the country is in decline(which can be self fulfilling).

That's not to say that it's not a shame what happened to this girl, or the perpetrator shouldn't be brought to justice, but there's no reason people in New York, Florida, and California need to hear about it.

I have. I lived there. I have friends who live there. It's a big city. You should visit it some time. Or at least try to figure out the difference between rate and counting numbers.

But I'm sure you're the type of person who thinks RBIs are a better measure of a baseball player than WAR.

I think your confused. My church went their to help people because they are desperate and being ignored by their mayor and our national media. Maybe because the people there aren’t as important as others?

As as far as rate and counting numbers try looking at Chicago Crime Rates in the 1920s. Yea that’s what I thought.

Nope, I'm not confused at all. Why doesn't your church go to the rural south where poverty and violence happen at rates that equal or outstrip Chicago?

Again, I'd encourage you to discover the difference between rate and counting stats. I know that in many religious communities science and math are looked down on, but I hope yours isn't one of those.

The 1920's?
When almost no drugs were illegal.
When married women were considered "legal minors" and could legally be beaten and raped by their husbands.
When there child labor laws were drastically different.
When drunk driving was legal.

Gee, I wonder why an era with drastically fewer crimes had a lower crime rate. Whatever could be the explanation for that?

The problem in Chicago is gun violence my man. You are choosing to ignore this. You are choosing to ignore that more guns were allowed in the 20s (ever here of the Mafia? How bout bootlegging?) yet there were Waaaay less gun deaths. There are so many it’s out of control and nobody seems to care. Have you talked with these people who have lost loved ones? My guess is no. Wake up man. You are sick and I feel bad for you and your family and your fellow citizens.

If you're so concerned about high homicide rates in cities, why aren't you talking about St. Louis, Baltimore, New Orleans, and Detroit? They all have higher rates than Chicago. For that matter, why not talk about Gary, IN? Or is Chicago just an easy bogey-man for you to harp on about?

Cook County isn't even in the top ten for murder rate by county.
https://www.policeone.com/ambush/articles/370416006-10-U-S-counties-with-the-highest-murder-rate/

Chicago isn't a top ten crime rate city in America, yet I never hear folks like you talk about any of the ones that are. Why is that?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

You get hung up on it because it has the most crime for cities with a population over 1,000,000. That means the total number is large, but it's actual rate is lower than a significant number of other cities. And please, stop calling people who disagree with you "sick." Being better informed isn't an illness.

Mike, just fucking stop trolling you little twat. You have no idea what you're talking about, pretty much ever if it doesn't involve M athletic stats. People like you make me sad to have to accept that this is what our society is producing. Unthinking, unoriginal, whiny little twats, with rock bottom shit flinging political bent. You suck. I'd say do better, but this is just what you are. Couldn't even refrain on this particular thread, of all threads. You, are a sad human being.

Remove a few city blocks where gangs are highly concentrated and there is very little violent crime left over in Chicago.  There is a gang problem stemming from an abundance of single moms and absent fathers and shitty real estate policies from years back that drove out the middle class.  Add terrible public schools and corrupt government officials with no budget to speak of and you have a toxic culture with lots of violence. It's not poverty that causes violence, but that is also there as well and doesn't help. Gun laws don't do shit as there already are strict gun laws in place.  Also criminals break laws, including gun laws. No statistics on how many lives are saved by brandishing or using a gun. Also gun deaths include suicide, accidental misfires, etc. so not a great stat to use when assessing violent crime rates. Make guns illegal and there will be a black market and more dangers involved just like there is with drugs and drug lords.  Speaking of, make drugs legal.  It's a nuanced complicated problem with no easy fix, that said it's not as bad as you think and slapping some more gun laws into the books will do jack shit to help.

If single motherhood causes gang violence, why isn't Iceland, where 2/3rds of children are born out of wedlock, a violent hellscape? Guns are so readily available in Chicago because they are so readily available in Indiana.

Why is it gun laws work in literally every other industrialized nation in the world, but they won't work here?

Try looking at it in the 70s and 90s. Most notably '74 and 91-92. Yeah, that's what I thought. I've noticed it's en vogue to use Chicago when certain groups dog whistle to certain people, while ignoring the fact that the city has had FAR worse years, and that there are cities that are far more dangerous and bleak.

The world is safer, as is the country as a whole, that doesn't mean specific areas are all safer across the board.  But that's exactly my point, the danger in Chicago is a Chicago problem, or an Illinois problem, it's not a Michigan problem.  It shouldn't lead to expanding swat teams in Nebraska because people are afraid of gun violence in Chicago.  It shouldn't excuse police fearing for their lives during a traffic stop in NYC and being justified in shooting an unarmed black driver because he heard about the gun risks in Chicago.

Easier to get guns then and it was easier to get away with crime.

Yeah, it's really hard to find a Walmart in Chicagoland. Or a Dunhams, Dicks, or Bass Pro Shops. Hell, there's a destination Cabellas in Hammond, IN just 30 mins way from the Loop. In addition to that, the gun manufacturing production numbers have far outstripped the population growth since 1918 - or 1968 for that matter.

If it was easier to get away with crime in 1918, wouldn't that imply that the crime rate you refer to was under-reported?

The guns are being smuggled in from Indiana. The areas hit by the violence are the areas always hit by violence: the south and west sides. It's impossible to know whether it's the chicken or the egg here. The facts are that neighborhood schools have closed, making it hard for some kids to get there, therefore drop out rates are high. No education means no job. Gangs act as a patriarchy, providing father figures, structure, and belonging -- a sense of purpose that a job or a career usually provide. And it all keeps going in circles. I grew up in Chicago, as did my entire family -- here since the early 1900's. They lived on the south side until the 60's. I live in Evanston now. I wish people would stop laying blame and start helping.
