Brandon Peters POSBANG

Submitted by Hold This L on

With only 18 days until kickoff, and with the BTN bus stopping by practice yesterday, I wanted to start a positive BP thread.

I have always felt that Peters had a legitimate shot at starting since Shea transferred. He knows the offense, even if Jim is changing is up a bit, he has developed relationships with his teammates over two offseasons, he was able to play mistake-free/conservative in the regular season, and he wasn’t shy to competition.

From the way it sounds, Shea hasn’t shown he’s the clear cut option over Brandon. He brings that improvisational skill, ability to extend plays or create. Brandon is the more talented passer, IMO, and has the prototype build with above average athleticism for the position. He was thrown into the fire last year and did the best he could with what he was dealing with. The bowl game, well, the fumble in the red zone and complete brain farts on D probably, in his mind, forced him to take chances. They didn’t pan out.

A huge part of Brandon is confidence. There are some guys like Shea who have a cockiness to them, and that’s not a bad thing at all. They won’t get fazed by anything and they believe in their abilities. Guys like Brandon need coaches who trust them and don’t micro manage. I believe if he’s truly given a chance and he proves out of camp that he’s the best QB on the team, he can lead us to a national championship.

No. I did this because so much of the fan base has been incredibly negative about Brandon when he hasn’t been given a decent chance yet. From what the guys on BTN were saying, it didn’t sound like Shea was the clear cut favorite. If somehow BP is named starter, we can’t expect him to fail or be nervous about his play. Just let him ball out. I thought it was good timing with the broadcast from practice just a few hours ago and 18 days until kickoff

Are we talking about the same Brandon Peters who was hailed as the savior of the offense by most of the fanbase when he took the field midway through last season?

Only after the bowl did he take some criticism, and it was nothing out of the ordinary.  If you thought that was harsh, you must not have been a fan during the Navarre years.

I'm just rooting for the team.  If Peters is the QB of said team, awesome.  If it's Shea, awesome.  McCaffery, ditto.

I’ve been on the peters train since before the 2016 season and I still am. The offense had become far too predictable last year. It’s the same fans that applauded JOK for a good half against Purdue then treated him like Judas the rest of the season.

I swear based on the responses on here you’d think I was defending Zach smith

Edit: that’s my whole point about the QB competition. It seems like a lot of fans would be devastated if Shea didn’t win the job, like our season would automatically be a failure. I want the guy who’s gonna give us the best chance to win. The whole point of this post was to convince people to not write off peters

The way Peters was portrayed in the All or Nothing series on Amazon, he really seemed to be lacking the take charge leadership type of personality.  I don’t think that is a good thing for a QB.  I’d totally expect Patterson to start and would prefer McCaffrey to Peters also.

People applauded JOK during Purdue because he actually looked and played like a QB (the one and only time he was able to do this).  Every other performance by JOK was either a tire fire or close to.

Peters QB play last year was "applauded" last year because he didn't lose us the game.  That being said, I know it feels like forever since we have had one, but a QB can actually help you win games.   Peters hasn't shown that ability yet.  Patterson has and hopefully McCaffrey will too.

Amen.

Navarre was just totally ripped by the fan base, because sometimes, to be honest, we can be whiny punks.

Sure, he wasn't mobile, but he helped win us a ton of games. Sometimes I think that some people have an idea of something in their head; be it an offense (WE NEED A MODERN OFFENSE) a type of player (WE NEED A MOBILE QB!) or whatever, and if they don't get it then every good thing about what they do have is ignored and whatever bad things happened are attributed what they see as a gaping flaw.

You know who we would do amazing with this year? Rudock. We don't need Denard or Johnny Football. We need a smart guy who knows when to cut his losses, can run an efficient O, and NOT TURN THE BALL OVER.

With this defense, if *any* of our QB's live up to that we are going to have one hell of a fun year. Anything beyond that is bonus.

Navarre had a tough sophomore season, but he wasn't expected to be the starter at all - it was supposed to be Henson, but then the Yankees signed him away in the offseason.  I think some of the fan criticism was due to people being frustrated over not getting to see Henson his senior year and transferring it onto Navarre.  And then even when Navarre improved after that, they couldn't let it go.

He got more of a chance than most freshman will ever get.  Harbaugh said that the easiest thing for a quarterback to do was to be loud, to take charge.  That did not describe BP last year.  He also seemed to lack an internal clock that got him caught standing, blindsided, way too many times.

I am rooting for him to improve, but he lacked some pretty fundamental things that great QB's need.

This is a good post, but take exception with the last half of the last sentence.  Freshmen QBs often don't show the fundamental things you refer to, until their late sophomore and on, years...   Peters showed quite alot for a freshman... the one thing I thought I saw is him wilt from that hit by Wisconsin... I recall it wasn't a strong hit and he went out for the game.  Maybe an earlier hit caused the injury, but the last one I saw, looked quite weak, and the feeling I got was he used it to sit.

Let's not do this. You can't judge the impact of an injury based on what you see from your couch. It isn't always the biggest hits that cause injuries, and even the most commonplace tackles can lead to injury. In addition, the reaction of the player cannot always indicate the severity either. I remember a few years back when Jay Cutler got hurt in the NFC championship game and came out. He was simply standing on the sideline watching the rest of the game and the entire Bears fanbase and media crucified him for it, only to find out that he had a torn MCL.

My point is, neither you or I know how serious an injury is, so to accuse BP of faking an injury to sit for the rest of the game, especially seeing as how he ended up missing OSU because of the same concussion, is in bad form. Michigan has already had one bad instance of having a guy play with a concussion, we don't need another.

Don’t think anyone is down on Peters. We just want the best QB to play and get much improved QB play next year as last season it hurt us from game one.  I think Peters could be in more of a dog fight for #2 with  DM then he is with being the starter. But let the competition play out and all cheer for whoever takes the field on September 1

Sorry to burst your bubble... I like Peters too but not sure where you're getting your info.  Seems like you're believing coach speak over insider info.

Don't spend the whole season complaining that he "wasn't given a chance."

Well, speaking of negativity - maybe you shouldn't write off anyone else on the team, either.  We had a young team.

Don't get too fixated on individual players.  I want them all to have a great collegiate experience, but they can't all get the playing time they want.  That's just how it goes.

It was poor coaching. Drevno was pulling the line one way and Frey the other. The young receivers weren’t being taught the position properly to be effective in the complex offense the staff wanted to run. With the constant reads at the LOS, many times the guys in the backfield had no clue there was extra pressure coming or from where. They were young, but they were treated like fifth year seniors in how the staff was expecting them to grasp the offense.

You are right about one thing, our O-line blocking was not up to Michigan (Bo, Mo, & Lloyd) standards and as a result EVERY offensive position group was below par.  We were #105 out of 129 teams ?.

Really hoping for better O-line play, otherwise we will be clamoring for Dylan and Joe.

I like Shea, don’t get me wrong. I just think writing off peters is wrong. Shea was the number 1 QB in his class, Brandon was 3. There isn’t some huge talent gap here. Shea wasn’t EXACTLY lighting the world on fire at ole miss. He’s got loads of untapped talent. So does Brandon. They are great in different areas. Shea reminds me of baker or manziel, Brandon reminds me of Luck or Jared Goff. It depends on how they want the offense to operate.

No need to be totally negative on here.

He has more playing time of course. But I don’t get the “accomplished” part. What has he won that Brandon hasn’t? An individual award like the O’Brien or heisman? A conference championship? A lot of touchdowns against south Alabama and Vanderbilt? He might have him there.

I don’t dislike Shea. I really am glad he’s here. I don’t get why BP gets written off of by so many fans. If Shea wins, great! I’m just starting a conversation to defend peters and his talents that so many fans throw in the trash.

If you watch their tape and compare it, Peters in his play style reminds me of an Andrew luck. Big arm, not super athletic but enough to be effective. Bigger guys who have a low key demeanor. His throwing motion reminds me of luck a bit. Shea and the way he operates and the way he carries himself is like mayfield and Manziel. Extending plays, similar throwing motion, similar athletic ability and stature even though baker is the smallest.

You would think by your response I was advocating for castration.

Dude, as explained earlier, Peters wasn't negbanged by the fan base.  He was only like the 3rd most maligned QB on the team last year.  He also happened to have his worst game of the year in the last game we had, so of course that is going to be the fan base's lasting image for 8 months.  It was also pretty reminiscent of Shane Morris' somewhat recent bowl game which did not project to good future things.

Also your comment is going to take heat because Peters is not in the same athletic level as Andrew Luck.  Google Image "Andrew Luck NFL Combine" and tell me if you think the two guys are comparable.
