What's Your Coolest Piece of Michigan Memorabilia?

Submitted by Lakeyale13 on

Title says it all.  Mine is a collection of Upper Deck SP Rookie Threads cards that had the letters taken off of game used University of Michigan Football jerseys.  I got them to spell "MICHIGAN".  I will try to post a pic if I can. So what is yours?

Bothers me that the law school diploma is significantly smaller than my undergraduate diploma from another school.  I don't know if that's the same for everyone.

I'm prouder of the Michigan degree. I'd like the diploma to be about 3'x5' and made of cloth so I could use it as a flag.

During college I worked at a movie theater in Ann Arbor and I met Chris Perry a few days after the Heisman ceremony as he was on his way into Return of the King. He shook my hand and signed my theater schedule.

Haven't washed my hand since and still have that theater schedule.

I don’t really have anything truly remarkable for Michigan, but I do have a piece of Boise states turf. The last time they replaced it, my friends snuck onto the field and each stole a yard of turf. It’s only about 8 inches wide or so. They’re my second favorite college.

I've got a jagged section of stadium seating I dumpster-dived off the concourse after a basketball game when I was in school, about 3 or 4 seats. They were just sitting there in a broken-up pile during a renovation project. I picked out the smallest piece I could find and zig-zagged my way back to the dorm through the snow. Carrying six feet of bleacher could attract attention.

Next morning the Daily crime notes reported the cops showed up just a few minutes later and arrested people for doing the same thing. Next time they did renovations, they dumpstered the seats and put the equivalent of a large-scale blender to shred it all. Athletics is positively paranoid of the secondary memorabilia market.

I also have a section of Michigan Stadium seats- about 8 seats long.  When they were redoing the bowl seating some years ago, they had all these bench seat sections sitting where people could take them.  My neighbor went in there and got a couple sections and gave one to me.  For the life of me I can't figure out why Bill Martin didn't sell them off to raise money.  They would have sold really well.

It's really interesting because you can pry up the fiberglass cover they put on them in the 60's and see the redwood bench underneath from the late 1920's with the seat number stencils still visible .  Eventually , I'm going to incorporate the bench into our rec room in the basement.

It wasn't just Martin. During the Brandon era, when Yost was renovated, they did the exact same thing, flat-out trashing to the point of obliteration any piece that could be resold. I know we would have bought our bleachers if we could, and so would all of the season ticket holders around us. But Athletics 100% said no, they were not for sale, and would be destroyed. That's policy across the board.

There's a weird attitude in 1000SSS about stuff that could end up on the secondary market. They'd rather it not be out there at all than make money on it once. They could make a killing. I have a feeling there's still some residual issues around when the wooden bleachers were being sold in the 90s. Bo's stepson got caught up in a scheme to sell them off and it ended up in court.

Damn - Diploma already came up. Otherwise, I have a signed John Navarre card and John U Bacon's hancock on a foam wolverine cap. No, I realize I am a disappointing collector. I did *really* appreciate Navarre, though!

Somewhere, buried in the house, is my game ticket stub from Bo's last game at Michigan Stadium, against OSU.  A great win, and he was carried off the field.

Toss up

A photo my father took as a youngster at the Ohio State game in 1927, the very first to take place in Michigan Stadium.

A photo taken of my son and one of his best friends at Under the Lights #1. It's from the 360 degree camera that they put at the 50 yard line before the game.

My Michigan degree.

Edit: One more - I have set of coasters made from the astroturf that was taken out, I think, in the early 80s.

I was a ball boy for the high school camps on campus following the 97 and 98 seasons. I have a practice mesh jersey signed by Bo, Lloyd, Glen Steele, Victor Hobson, Ian Gold, Sam Sword and others. Also got it signed by JH a few years ago on the first summer of satellite camps.

My brother who had Down Syndrome was a big Michigan fan. Lloyd Carr gave him an autographed picture and after my brother passed, we hung the picture up by our bar with our other Michigan "stuff". Maybe not the coolest, but Lloyd has always held a sweet place in my heart for doing that.

Lloyd Carr nearly lit me up with a duck hook of a drive on the UM golf course.

He was kind enough to autograph the ball for me later in the clubhouse.

There was a cover picture on a 1969 Michigan home program featuring Bo, Bump, Benny, Fritz and Kipke.  I have now collected the autographs of each, but I need to have them framed. That will be cool, but there are lots of great posts.

I have a paper signed by the 2002-03 football team, as well as tommy amaker for some reason lol. Have some other less "cool" memorabilia that have significantly more sentimental value, though.

I'm not big on memorabilia in general, but I like uniforms.

I own a game-worn dazzle maize Michigan Hockey Jersey (with a glorious script "Michigan" on the front) occasionally used by then-freshman Tim Cook. I occasionally wear it to games. It's a hair small on me, but Tim was the biggest guy on the team in 2004 and he wasn't a high-demand name so I felt good about bidding for it in the silent auction.

Lloyd Carr signed my football after the 100th Game (we won). 1 of only 2 things he signed that day. Also, my dad has Anthony Carter’s chinstrap, which AC initialed.
