Bag men and all, I say that Saban deserves every penny.

The university announced a new eight-year deal Friday worth at least $74.4 million, which would appear to make Saban again college football’s highest-paid coach based on annual salary.

The agreement runs through the 2025 season, boosting his average annual pay to $9.3 million if he sticks around for the duration.

“Our family is thrilled to agree to a contract extension with the University of Alabama that will keep us in Tuscaloosa for the rest of our coaching career,” Saban said in a statement.

I dated a former Auburn cheerleader (obligatory humble brag) and her response to that phrase (every time) was, "...around the rim and down the hole.", followed by "War damn eagle." I still think that and laugh, every time I hear Roll Tide, Roll.

I can't argue he's not worth it. Which would make it all the sweeter if Jim Harbaugh/Michigan beats him some day.

Ahhh yes and gasp of relief it will be. The passing of the torch. I want that game and the trojans in their back-yard getting an ass kicking. You can wish in one hand and go #2 in the other and see which one gets filled first. I'd say just hold the #2 and Go Blue! Just Win Baby!!

Bowden and Paterno started to struggle roughly about the time they were 75 years old.

For Bowden, this meant some 7-6 and 8-5 years in which they lost some games to teams they shouldn't have (3-9 North Carolina State in 2006).

For Paterno, this meant some pretty bad seasons in the early 2000s (as bad as 3-9 in 2003).

No coach of an amateur college athletics program should get this kind of money. This kind of thing creates unrealistic expectations that filter throughout the programs (e.g. some UM fans already starting to question JH's coaching ability) and has to be a motivating factor for coaches to cheat, bend the rules and exploit the young men playing the game. It also motivates the rules governing bodies to "look the other way" at bag men and other shenanigans.

Its at a point where the only thing that is amateur about it is the lack of market based compensation and representation for the guys who play the game and risk life altering injuries. Everyone else from the guys at the concessions and ticket counter, to the sideline reports, studio announcers, advertisers to the coaches and AD are getting PAID. And those others don't have their lives almost completely controlled by the institutions.

So I guess nobody was actually cheating and exploiting young men when Bo and Bear and Woody were making low 5 figure salaries some 50 odd years ago?

Ambitious, egotistical, and paranoid people are driven to coach. The cheating and exploitation (not all coaches) comes with that territory.

Can't say he hasn't earned it.  I mean, aside from being a decent coach that finds good people to hire, he set up one of the best business organizations in all of football.  Nary a chink in the armor, and the chinks that have showed up were like a pebble hitting the windshield - the kind that doesn't crack it.

How funny will it be if Saban starts declining like two years into this contract?  As a fan, I don't like when my team gets involved with huge multiple year contracts.  Good thing I'm not a bama fan

Who are we kidding - If he said he wanted to coach in AA everyone would be happy to pay him 10MM. He is simply the best coach there is ( maybe ever will be )
