Second Best (or worst) College Fight Songs
We all know which is number one, but for those of you starving for some CFB pageantry, which teams fight song makes your toes tap? (Or which one "slaps" with "BDE" for anyone born after 1993)
My two are Texas A&M because of it being a giant middle digit to Texas and I'd also like to visit Kyle Field just to join into that arm locking deal that they do when they sing about "sawing varsity's horns off"
Also some love to Georgia Tech due to the lyrics mentioning drinking whiskey and being a "helluva engineer"
Who ya got for your best and worst?
OSU's fightsong sucks almost as bad as their band.
I actually like "Buckeye Battle Cry" - the one they play after TDs, not "Across the Field", which Michigan fans parodied.
I also think MSU's fight song is good. Sue me.
The obvious answer, however, is Tennessee's unofficial fight song, Rocky Top.
Okay. You can expect to be served early next week.
MSU's fight song is horrendous.
I actually think it's the catchiest fight song in the land. I hear it once and I'm whistling it for a week.
Agreed. The lyrics are crappy, but it's a catchy tune.
second best is easy, even if difficult to admit: ND
I would agree that it's a distant second. Fight songs are such a great part of college football.
Others good fight songs
2-USC
3-FSU
4-Army
5-Oklahoma
The Victors is obviously the runaway #1.
I painfully admit ND is second place.
The worst is the Maryland Fight song IMO.
Most overvalued and by far most overplayed is Boomer Sooner/FSU War Chant
Texas also takes a shot at A&M in their song "Texas Fight" ("Texas Fight, Texas Fight, and it's goodbye to A&M"). The best feature of A&M singing is the swaying, which is really fun with their 99% participation.
I'm kind of a mark for Rocky Top, honestly, or I was back in the days when Tennessee didn't stink.
1 - The Victors
2 - Notre Dame
3 - Tennesse (Rocky Top is just a damn good song)
Worst: USC's "Conquest" (at least the small part that their band does between plays).
How could I forget about the horrid MSU Fight Song?????
Tune is slightly okay but lyrics are so horrendous it's not even funny....
on the banks of the red cedar?
"Spartan Teams are bound to win - they're fighting with a vim."
I estimate that only 14.3% of ignorant Spartys even know the definition of the word "vim".
That song sucks - I would rather hear Air Supply's full catalog of songs than that piece of shit...
At Virginia games they sing Auld Lang Syne after each touchdown, which are rare. I don't think that's their official fight song, but it appears to be what they favor to "show spirit." I went to one game there, and after a TD the stadium went into that dreary tune. Awful disconnect between the excitement of a TD and that melody.
Shouldn't the OP be "2nd G.O.A.T. fight song"?
Points seem to be working again - for the moment!
I love ND's song.
I’d have to say Navy and Rocky Top behind The Victors.
Clemson. So fun.
Hold that tiger!
It's definitely up there with Tennessee's Rocky Top and West Virginia's Country Roads.
2nd best is Michigan Tech - "In heaven there is no beer"
Also a fan of the Dropkick Murphy's version of BC's fight song, "For Boston". (But not the BC band. Their version is awful)
Miami (YTM) actually has a pretty cool fight song. FSU's also catchy--not the Warchant, but the actual fight song. The lyrics are all about scalping people so...whatever. I wouldn't sing it. Bama has a cool fight song. OSU's two that the band plays are cool. The 2nd best is the Tennessee band playing "Rocky Top" though. Fucking inspiring man. It isn't "The Victors" but it's good.
Worst - Wisconsin
It has 2 words, "On Wisconsin," over and over and over....
If you watch Florida State vs. Miami, you'll hear probably the two worst fight songs in the land.
And in regards to FSU, I'm talking about their actual fight song and not the much more played (yet tedious) Braves chant that they play after first first downs, after 3 yard gains, after 2 yard losses, after lost fumbles, after punts, after timeouts, after commercial breaks, after interceptions, after 5 yard passes, after trick plays, and any other point of the game that isn't a score.
It must be a riot to be in the FSU marching band. All you play is one fight song that sounds like the intro to a preschool TV show and a stand chant that causes everyone across the country to mute their TV's simultaneously.
No, 2: On Wisconsin, which my high school stole (I'd like to say it was vice versa, but I have to be honest).
For its alma mater, my high school stole Purdue's fight song and slowed it down. The slower version is better.
Underrated nominees: UCLA and Minnesota
