2019 SDE David Ojabo to commit on July 2nd, per his Twitter
What the hell is up with the scouting services this year? A guy with this kind of offer sheet shouldn't be a middling 3-star. Should be a lower end 4-star at the least.
He's a scottish/nigerian former basketball player that goes to a small private school in New Jersey and played his first year of organized football ever in 2017. He'll be a high 4* by the end of the cycle, there's just not enough film or scouting on him.
You have to dig deeper than that. You have to look at the whole picture. It’s more than just his ranking, it’s more than just his offers.
He’s a kid who just started playing football last year. So his rankings aren’t going to be as accurate as to his actual abilities.
I agree with you that this guy's offer list looks more like a 4 star. Keep in mind the recruiting sites always lag the offer list because the coaches are evaluating these kids sooner in most cases than the sites are. The teams have more resources (money, personnel and relationships) and expertise in scouting players than the recruiting sites do, and the sites only re-rank so often so there is always a lag. It wouldn't surprise if this kid is ranked higher down the road.
This would be nice. Especially since I've heard from State fans how they "beat UM for Fletcher", the DE who committed to Sparty this weekend. Who frankly, I had never even heard of.
Fletcher is a good prospect who I would be happy to have in the class. He’s a raw Chris Wormley type. I like who UM is getting at the position including if they get this pick up, but Fletcher, in my mind, may end up one of the best players from the state in this class if he gets coached up
If you had one spot to give would it go to Fletcher or Ojabo? It seems like the coaches have been pushing harder for Ojabo.
The coaches were apparently pushing hard for both. They both have really high upside. Ojabo is a little more raw at this point. He might be faster, but Fletcher is quite athletic himself. Ojabo has the potential to be larger and to slide inside. Fletcher appears to be more of a DE. They're both good talents.
Q. Johnson on 7/3
E. Gray this weekend
I like his 247 photo. Michigan has had some success with recruits whose surname starts with Oj and possess solid Death Stares.
What WR are we recruiting for this class?
It would seem like a priority with us only getting one last year whose probably a slot.
so far G. Johnson for 2019 and Branham in 20
There are only a few targets on the outside that I am aware M is pushing for. One is Luke Ford a Top 150 kid from CA who claims he wants to take a visit. More likely/promising is Cornelius Johnson out of Connecticut (Don Brown/Tarik Black connections) who is currently a top 300 kid who is being hyped for a possible rankings jump while competing at the opening this weekend. Believe this is a ND/M battle at present although I admit I hadn’t seen much about him until recently.
Wandale Robinson is also being recruited as a slot/offensive weapon ala recent commit George Johnson.
Kyle Ford, right? I think Luke was a TE recruit who went to Georgia. In any case, a Kyle Ford visit would be spectacular.
He just said Harbaugh is one of the greatest people he ever met. Also said how the university would set him up for life after football is very important to him. And the distance he would have to travel from home means very little. All very good signs for UM.
He mentioned that the weather is a bit of a factor & playing time as a freshman is huge. Frowny face...
this guy is a kid with a lot of potential...
he's definitely going to get a bump down the road
Only been playing football for a year, hence the low rankings. Freak athlete at 6'4-5" 240lbs who I thought I heard ran a 10.9 100m dash but after researching saw an 11.1.
This is the kind of kid who has a lot of room to jump up in the rankings after scouts see how much he has improved during his senior season. His ceiling is vast. This is the kind of 3 star you get giddy over, especially knowing Mattison and Co.'s track record for DL development. I will be shocked if he's not a top 300 recruit by the time February hits.
Recruiting wise Harbaugh has been hitting it out of the park lately.
Exactly. He reminds me of Eyabi Anoma. He went from a similar ranking to a top 5 recruit. And Michigan discovered Anoma, but couldn't reel him in. He's gonna be an all american.
I think he's been getting some promising 3 stars but saying that he's "knocking it out of the park" is pure hyperbole. We're losing ground to the heathens in Columbus and until JH recruits at a similar level to Urban, we can't that he's knocking it out of the park.
Michigan isn't going to compete at OSU's level in recruiting, until they start beating them. So all of this handwringing about it is absurd. This kid isn't a "promising 3 star". This kid is a 4-star talent with higher upside, that hasn't been placed properly by recruiting services, because he hasn't been playing football long enough.
I would suggest that fans let the former NFL player and Super Bowl coach do the talent evaluating and not worry so much about "stars".
You're an OSU fan. Stop pretending you like Michigan.
11.1?? Not 10.9!!
Sorry -no longer interested.......
The 247 National guy’s were saying that Zach Harrison (#1 overall recruit on 247, #4 on composite) is the only other DE that has that combo of size and athleticism this year.
The last king of Scotland!
Young man has some Ivy offers. Got to be a pretty smart guy. Imagine the academics side here would not be a problem.
I love the emphasis on the DL this cycle but it does seem were a little heavy on DE's. Does the staff think Hinton may be able to move inside?
I think Hinton prefers to play SDE but has the size to play inside (almost) already. I actually look at it as he will need to earn the right to play End / prove he is explosive enough to edge rush - just like I think Gary could play 3-Tech with a little more weight if it were not such a loss to move him from end.
Hinton could well move inside. Last year this young man lined up a lot on the inside as well...though HUDL lists him as 6'6" 245#. Clearly Ojabo has good athleticism but he is also the definition of "raw"...but if he comes to Michigan he will surely redshirt and have time to develop.
Think the coaches just likes big rangey DL who can run. They cross train just about everyone at two spots. Enough will naturally gain enough weight to give you depth on the SDE/3T continuum with Wormley being the recent history example of a dude who is both at once.
Basing that opinion on the ‘16 and ‘17 classes being really DE heavy and the staff turning away (ex: Corey Bolds) or cooling on (ex: Rodas Johnson) a few solidly rated DTs who aren’t particularly explosive.
TL;DR Wormley is a pretty solid role comp for Hinton.
Give us all your 3 stars!
Bluey is pulling for ped state or THEEEEE ohio.
Think you meant to go here: https://www.elevenwarriors.com/
Looks like a solid prospect and the type that you do expect to get a bump as he gets more comfortable playing football and refines his technique. While "great athlete who changes sports" is always tantalizing, sometimes that doesn't quite materialize into the player you expect. No knocking him, and he's got good size even before the move, but I try not to put too high of expectations on a kid who has only played football for a couple of years.
