OT - Westworld season finale (Spoilers)

Submitted by MGoBender on

Anyone watching the Westworld season finale?  Though I've watched every episode, I'm struggling to understand just what the fuck is going on.  Really felt they've totally spun their wheels in this entire season.  Maybe these last 40 minutes will change my mind....

I thought the season finale was really good and really tied in the whole story really well. I really have to give props to the creators for creating such an interesting world and conflicts between characters that are gray without a clear right or wrong.

I believe it is because he is based on Arnold, and Arnold wore glasses.

In season 1 we saw Ford work to help Bernard mimic the exact glasses cleaning process that Arnold would perform as he pondered his response to a question.

Also, Delores ran over 11,000 tests of Bernard to try to get him to be exactly like Arnold.

I think the Bernard at the end that did not wear his glasses, portrayed more of his own personalty, his Bernard-ness if you will, as opposed to just being an Arnold replica.

I’m with OP here...the first season was interesting without being overly complex. This season was an attempt to be M Night Shyamalan from the Sixth Sense, but it just doesn’t land.  The whole season just felt....off, and the pacing of the season didn’t do the plot any favors.  After watching this season, including the final post credit scene, I’m honestly not convinced they have enough of a story to tell to validate a 3rd season.  It wasn’t as bad as season 2 of True Detective, but it wasn’t great either.

After thinking about it a bit today and reading up a bit, I think my critique of this season is the result of three items.

1. I thought we were going to see the outside world; I thought we were going to get some insights to how Westworld fits into the real world and what happens when the hosts enter that real world.  Therefore, I had the feeling of wheels spinning.  The real-time covered in the season couldn't have been more than a week, right?

2. Jumping. All. Over.  I struggled to follow one episode to the next.  Three entire 1-storyline episodes (The William/Delos episode, which I liked. The Shogun episode.  The Ghost Nation episode).  That plus timeline jumps that were much more difficult to follow.

3. I simply don't care for the hosts. I haven't been sold on their humanity. I think Dolores, as a character, sucks (whereas Maeve is much more interesting). Dolores' lack of empathy made it easy for me to not recognize the hosts' humanity.  For this season to hold one's interest, I think you needed to be invested in the hosts' battle for humanity, and I still am not.  They're just robots to me.  Bernard was probably supposed to get the audience to that point, but I honestly was just ALWAYS confused when he was in a scene.

I thought I was doing fairly well following it through the Ghost Nation episode. But the last three - I'm struggling. MIB was being portrayed as human through the entire second season, and even seems to suspect he's a host by digging in his arm, but if he's not a host then how in the world can he take gunshots like they're paintballs and cut open his arm and blow off his hand and somehow he's bouncing around like a 20-year-old in the next scene. And if he's not a host, then his whole story line seems rather pointless since he shot Maeve apparently to prove to himself that he was royally screwed in the head after his wife killed herself. So he needed to follow the maze and then find the door and next season he'll slap the banner at the top of the archway and maybe if he sticks with it long enough, he'll be champion of the west. I like it, but the entire Delos plot seems to revolve around no one having any knowledge of even 2010's data storage techniques in the 2050s. Even though AI has advanced to a point I doubt it will even approach in 50 years. Though the sentience/advanced AI confusion is a sci-fi standard these days. Does Dolores go full Stephen King in Season 3? That could be fun.
