MSU loses QB commit to OSU

Submitted by reddogrjw on

Dwan Mathis flips to Ohio State - leaves Sparty with 1 recruit rated above 470 - Julian Barnett

It amazes me that MSU cannot recruit better off successful seasons

Will be interesting to see what this does to Barnett and others they are going after

Yeah, our QB recruiting has been wonky these last two seasons. I think we're in a transition phase from DUAL to PRO, but don't have the on-the-field results to prove to recruits that we're a good fit. QB Coach and OC Ryan Day has been a godsend in that regard, and I expect our top 2020 target Miller to commit in the next month or so. If Haskins balls out this year, I think our QB recruiting will be fine moving forward.

Cardale did OK in the playoffs so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also think these designations aren't always accurate. We're never going to recruit a statue, because Urban's always going to want to have the QB run as an option. But I think the past couple of years have shown that you can't win a National Championship without the ability to take the top off a defense, so they're prioritizing guys that can move a little but aren't just running backs that can handle the snap.

What was always weird to me regarding Barrett was that he was a pretty good passer coming out of HS.  Like, between him and Miller he was viewed as the "passer" and Miller the WR/RB taking snaps.  And yet, Barrett ultimately became a liability at QB when defenses could slow him down on the ground.

Yeah that's always puzzled me as well. Honestly I think JT's biggest problem in the passing game is that he didn't trust the WRs to make plays. He'd wait for the guy to absolutely get open, then throw the ball. Unfortunately that's not going to cut it against top-quality teams, so we'd end up with a lot of check-downs and scrambles. It's fine when you can out-talent the opposition but it's not going to crack open a good defense.

That being said, I'm sure I will pull my hair out a dozen times this season at the risks Haskins will take.

Considering the lack of PRO QBs on OSU's roster, Wilson's college track record, Day having worked as an NFL QB coach, and the focus Meyer puts on recruiting, the 2018 and 2019 QB classes look like a failure for OSU.  I won't complain as a Michigan fan, but I'd be concerned about anything happening to Haskins or him leaving early with a good year.

I don't worry about it, honestly. I'm happy with Baldwin - he only had one year starting in HS but led his high school to the state championship game in the toughest high school division in the country. 2019 QB class was thin overall and I don't think there was anyone the staff absolutely loved, but this is about as good as we could hope for. Miller in 2020 looks like a stud. I think the QB room is going to be solid.

Considering he has been after an OSU offer for a while and they just finally offered after missing on Mertz and passing on Gunnell, he wasn't a 1st choice.  And he's from Belleville just like Dobbs and Barnett so it's not unreasonable to question that angle.

Great news for us! OSU missing out on Grant Gunnell to freaking Kevin Sumlim at Arizona was critical here. Best of luck to Mathis but Urban’s QB development....

“Well, I mean, I hear people say it’s not important,” Meyer said way back on signing day in 2014 after Ohio State finished third nationally. “I disagree. As long as you’re keeping score we’re going to try to win. I’m disappointing we weren’t the No. 1 recruiting class in the country.  Our staff knows we’re disappointed about that.

“Is that the final end‑all? No … but there is a correlation between how teams do where your team is ranked [and where your] recruiting class is ranked.”

Meyer has admitted just about every year that he pays attention to those rankings, and that will make this closing stretch with the Buckeyes sprinting to a revamped finish line even more interesting than usual.

Certainly on paper, everything is shaping up the way Meyer envisions it for Ohio State. He obviously has made it no secret that it matters to him, even though it’s also true that the work is really only beginning when the ink dries on those signatures.

“Once again, what’s it really mean? Nothing,” Meyer said two years ago. “You had a skinny-neck kid from New Albany that played quarterback [now NFL linebacker Darron Lee] that ended up being OK and he wasn’t ranked very high. Every year that happens, but we do check those things out. I know I do.

“Rankings are important. As long as you’re keeping score, we like to do the best we can.”

Nor should any coach worth a damn. They do their own evaluations, they have their own recruiting “rankings” and they offer guys THEY like.

Fans fail to realize that the recruiting sites are there for OUR entertainment, and that coaching staff’s don’t pay much attention to them at all.

He said he pays attention to them and he’d like to have the top class (as you said, duh!). But Bluey conveniently ignored the parts where Meyer said it ultimately means nothing and acknowledges the flaws of the system.

Except that’s not at all what Urban Meyer said.

Does he pay attention to them? Sure. He looks. Does he want to have the top class? Sure, everyone does. Does he recruit players based off of the rankings? Absolutely not.

They do their own evaluations of players, just like every staff does. They have their own recruiting board based on those evaluations, just like everyone does. In no way, shape or form does Urban just look at the rankings and offer a kid based on that.

Yeah, I always get a kick out of much stock fans put into the impressions taken away from recruitniks at these camps. I went to the camp that was at Concordia College in A2 about five years ago as it is close to my house. It was just a bunch of drills and there were hundreds of players there.

Sugar Shane looked awesome!

And let's just say that I didn't see a single recruiting analyst who looked like they had ever played sports in high school.

Urban Meyer is really slipping.  I’m sure this isn’t what OSU fans expect for X Million dollars per year.  Pathetic.  He should probably just listen only to what recruitniks that make $25k/year think.  I mean, they have all of the credibility and never have clickbait periods to entice new subscribers and it is super easy to cancel so it’s definitely not a scam.

you don't get it

no one is saying ratings don't matter - we all know what the data supports

personally, I like any 3-star we take to have a decent offer sheet and be top 500

this staff does take more fliers, but then again, Harbaugh has a decent track record with 3-starts either being good or getting processed one way or another

your attitude and seemingly taking glee with bad news towards Michigan is why just about everyone would rather you not be on this board
