META - Board Apathy

Submitted by Shop Smart Sho… on

Anyone else very surprised that no one seems to have cared enough to make a board post pointing out that Brian didn't turn the comments on for the most recent main page post?

I, for one, am not enamored with the new site (and it's shortcomings) but I am going to be patient and give them time to work out the bugs  Now, if we get to August and football starts heating up and issues are still hanging around I may use other sources for my football feed fest

Honestly, my biggest issue is that if I read through a thread when there are say...50 comments, then come back to it when there are 100 I can't easily discern which are new and which are old when scrolling through. It makes revisiting threads much less enjoyable.

That and not being able to easily pull up the comments that I have left to see if there has been further discussion.

I have faith those two things will get worked out, but until then, my experience is not as good.

What is missing now that was in the old version? The posts are time stamped. They are slightly indented. And there is a line connecting the sub threads together.

I prefer the newer version much more than the old version when two people would get in an argument and the thread kept getting narrower and narrower causing it to become very long to scroll through some idiotic exchange.

What's missing is a) the ability to click on the "5 new" portion of the MGoBoard, which would take you to the first comment you hadn't already viewed and b) the red "new" stamp on comments you'd read before, making it easy to scroll through a thread and see each one of those new posts.

Now you have to re-read everything. Time stamps don't do much unless you want to spend a ton of time reading numbers and then trying to remember the last time you read that thread.

So...yeah. The board isn't as easy to read.

I, for one, feel like there's a lot of clicks & scrolling just to see new board posts when I'm on mobile. It's a firstworldproblem, but it's also more work than before. OTOH, this is a free site with amazing content and we're lucky to have it. The people that put work into it think this is better - so be it.

One small improvement would be to put the permanent postings for mods, etc at the bottom of true page instead of the top.   Everytime I log in, i have to scroll through the same 5 posts (which never seem to change) before seeing the content I want.

Also, where is the Reddit post gone to? I haven't seen for 3 days .

This, for sure. This is my biggest gripe. I've created a shortcut on my springboard to open Chrome right to MGoBoard, but it's so irritating to have to scroll just to see the first set of non-sticky posts.

Also, is it just me or has the board been pretty slow? I mean, I know it's OT season, but it seems really dead right now.

Not being able to vote on any comments.  Maybe I no longer have enough points, but there's no place to up- or down-vote anything.  And if it's true that I no longer have enough points, how about some communication of that new policy?

Also, the designer has somehow managed to make the site look cheaper.

I have same issue.  Well over the 100 point threshold (which hasn’t changed per one of Seth’s comments) but I don’t see any way to upvote/downvote or the voting results for each comment.  I’ve tried multiple browsers with same result.

It seems like the numbers of posts as well as the number of comments are down since the roll out of the new site. I have no idea if that is a fact, and it could simply be because we are in mid-June, but it just feels that way.

In a few threads now, some people have specifically pointed this out as the reason they've severely curtailed their posting. As for me, I almost exclusively access the site on laptops for a lot of reasons, so it doesn't slow me down in that sense, but the new format makes moderation a bit harder.

I have never used the app unless I wanted to see an invisible comment that people were respo to, but I definitely post less, I think because there is something about the layout that makes it feel more difficult to converse. It could very well just be getting used to the new format, but that's where I'm at right now.

The lack of an app is a big deal as fiddle farting with the site on a phone is a pain. I still use the link on the old app to get me to the site and select MGoboard from the dropdown menu; only problem is after each thread you can't go back to the thread list and have to repeat the process.

There is something about the new site that seems awkward; perhaps it is newness but MGoblog is not the only site I frequent and I don't feel that way about most other sites.

I'd also like to see features that allow us to put a URL for Youtube vids and have the software automatically embed same.

Still no upvoting or downvoting for me. I think that has attracted me less to the board. Brian and co don't seem to care enough to acknowledge any of the issues in detail, leading me to believe that they have de-prioritized the site as a place for commenting and really just want it to be a news source. If they don't deal with this soon, I'll just start going elsewhwere. I actually like the new site design, but I'm sad that I'm less interested in the site as a whole.

I just enjoyed the feature. You're right that it's not a huge deal. I did like to scroll comments upvoting the ones I liked. I was kind of hoping there would be a system for filtering those to the top. The lack of voting and lack of an app and other unresolved issues just make me feel like site is under construction. The fact that our hosts haven't acknowledged them in detail makes me feel like they don't care that much.

Read through the complaint sticky at the top of the MGoBoard list.  Seth has been responding to everyones complaints and suggestions. And so you can stop with the BS, he addressed the voting issue straight on.  Since you apparently can't be bothered to read, I'll summarize it for you: the voting module is poorly coded and not maintained very well, so they're (Brian and HUEL) going to code a whole new module when they get the chance.  So, for the time being, you can't vote.  Deal with it, the world won't end...

I complained a lot about the lack of communication - but Seth has been responding very well to that sticky thread.  Go read it, all of the same, tired complaints that pop up in every whiny thread are addressed.  But if you're just complaining to complain, with nothing specific (i.e.: I don't like it, whaaaa), there's nothing to address.

Ease up there buddy. The navigation of this site is different than the old one and it's easy to miss posts. And while Seth is doing a good job of responding in that thread, how long did they wait to initiate a dialogue? It seemed like a long time coming and only in response to posters creating related threads.

Thank you Mr Miggle. As with the poster that was being lectured, I too didn't know of the sticky where Seth has been answering things. If that thread had been mentioned in a less condescending way the information would've been received much better. Too bad I can't down vote that ass hat.

You're right, my post was a little harsh, so I'll apologize for that.

Yeah, the communication was too late in coming (and still is not enough, IMO).  Brian should have known, because he understands more about this site than anyone else.  But the blame (if 'blame' is the right word) is on the guys he paid - they should have done a far better job of communicating what was happening.  But, at least Seth is giving us updates now, and so we know that things are being worked.

I'm sorry for the perceived slight against your son, Seth's mom. I'll still give him site visits. I read through several posts and I'm tired of reading through them and looking for their plan. It should have been an article on the launch date. I'll still come here hoping for umbig11's posts, but the rest is info I can probably get elsewhere. At least during the offseason.

First - sorry for my initial ham-handed response.  My point was lost because of the tone.

Agree - there should have been a communication plan in place.  I've upgraded SW for 20-some years, and communication is the most important part of the plan.  And I'll say that it still isn't enough, but we do have something.  The MGoBoard link now shows every board post, and the MGo3.0 bug sticky is at the top of the list.  It's a thread started to identify complaints, and Seth took it over as the gathering point.  Not the best, but much better than nothing.

I can vote  - I just became the 4th to neg your obnoxious post Va.

Which just proves the issues are real - I'd have been more like 24th on 2.0

Your tone almost makes me think you're a Seth burner account?! I'm gonna say something about Seth's collars just to see if you reply that they're normal...

I was surprised at how much less enjoyable the blog is without the voting option. Seeing how many upvotes/downvotes certain comments received made me feel more in tune with the community. I also enjoyed upvoting witty or informative comments because that's a way to help encourage more such posts. When, for example, umbig11 sprinkles flecks of gold around here, the upvote provides a simple means of saying "thank you." After being used to the blog experience with voting, I feel less connected and in tune with the MGoCommunity without it.
