OT: U.S Open - Watch, Prediction and Rooting Thread

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on

The U.S Open is underway. It’s on FS1 and Fox basically all day. Not a great start for Phil, Rory and Jordan. They were a combined +11 through 3. The course looks very tough.

I would like to see Phil win as he needs the win for the career slam. His chances are slim. My 2nd choice would be Matt Kuchar. My prediction is Justin Rose or Jon Rahm will win.

As far as Tiger. I want him to either be towards the top 5 because it will make it interesting or just be at the bottom because when he makes the cut, but not in contention, they show him so much and it’s annoying. I don’t root for him... not a fan.

Are you watching? Who are you rooting for? What’s your prediction for who will win?

I predict golf will be boring to watch - but that is all we have coming down the pike/pipe (ir)regardless of how many indivisibles are part of the sporps viewing strategory.

Logged in to upvote. I dont get it. Everyone seems to love him and when I say I dont find him likable, everyone looks at me like IM taking crazy pills.  A guy I play with in a corporate outing every year is his "host" when the Tour comes to Firestone every year, and at the outing talks all day about Jordan and Michael (Greller, his caddy) and yadda yadda yadda, and I said I think he acts like a spoiled little kid out on the course and maybe its the announcers (like Nantz) and their fawning that makes me dislike the kid, but anytime you even breathe something slightly non-complimewntary about him, people act like you shot their dog.  Its a buit much, imho

Also, him getting a half hour to plan out that shot last year in the Open was incredibly unfair to Kuchar.

Way long story short, when I lived in Columbus, my Wifes hairdresser also cut Jason Day's hair. She had NOTHING but nice things to say about him and his wife (he has a home in Dublin by Jacks Place).

In case you might be thinking she just says nice things about clients who presumably pay (and tip) well, she also cuts Urban's hair (or at least she did at the time).  From what she told me, Urban doesnt go out for a hair cut, he made her come to him.  Supposedly, one of the Athletic Dept assistants (one of the old-timers) had to say something to Urban about being nice to "the help" because he was curt, to the point of being rude. He's a peach, apparently

I've met Tiger a few times and he isn't exactly a nice guy.  I used to root for him a long time ago before I got to know him.  To me, he is the Urban Meyer of professional golf.

Tiger Woods makes Urban Meyer look like a great guy.  I am with you. Used to cheer for him until I met the guy and have spoken with many other people who have had similar experiences and realized the stories I have heard about him are all true.  He is as big of an ass as there is in professional sports and I hope he never wins another tourney.

Have told people who cheer for him, that if they ever met him they would never cheer for the guy again.

I kinda feel bad for Tiger.  He is incredibly socially awkward. He is, in fact, a nerd. A dork.  But, instead of spending all his time as a youth watching Sci-Fi and going to space camp, he was out on a golf course.

Then, he becomes this media darling and has to put on this sheen of "swell guy" when all he wants to do is play golf (because Earl was one of the worst "stage moms" ever). I mean, he made millions from it, he could've dropped the act any time he wanted (and didnt because plies of cash are better than no coash) so, ultimately it was all his choice. But, he's not so much a dick as he is just awkward.  Not an excuse. You can try harder to not be a douchecanoe if you so choose, and apprently he hasnt made that choice. Being awkward can still lead people to (rightly) not like a person, and thats fine. But theres a difference

Yep. I don’t root for him because of how his attitude towards fams (has gotten way better now that he sucks). Also, sitting in Federer’s box when he was playing Roddick at the U.S Open men’s tennis final in 06 was shady as shit. I mean... an American icon rooting against an American in an American Final..just felt messed up.

I root for Tiger because he's a great golfer. I'm not his friend. I don't care if signs an autograph for my kids. I don't care if he bangs diner waitresses on the side. He was that most dominant athlete I have seen and probably will ever see. I hope he wins another major and celebrates by telling the entire world including me to eat a bag of shit.

And for what it's worth, Harbaugh wore an Indiana shirt in Crisler. Seems like you got over that. But Tiger at a tennis match is unforgivable? I admire your double-standard.

It’s not a matter of forgiving. I just think it showed his true stripes. If he wasn’t such a prick otherwise maybe I wouldn’t have cared as much. Furthermore the media overhyped him and if he would have played against better golfers he would have half as many majors. I know he can’t help who he played against, but its a fact in today’s era he would not be who he was.... oh yeah and he used PEDS... so continue with your hero worship of an overhyped nerd who came at the right time. The Harbaugh thing is an idiotic comparison imo.

Also would love to see Phil finally get the US Open and complete his slam. Can't stand Tiger and hope he doesn't make the cut.

Holy shit. That featured group of Jordan, Phil, and Rory....woof. They're all doing terribly. I'm a Fowler guy, though. Hopefully he wins. He just did a double bogey, though.

Rickie had always been my guy too, wanted him to win a major so bad. However, he's engaged now so I don't think we'll see him in the winners circle anytime soon. Look what has happened to Spieth since his engagement, not the same player. I think finding love and happiness is great, the older guys on tour can balance the time better and commit. These youngsters though cant focus or put enough time on the course to compete with engagement parties and wedding to worry about.

This course is incredible to see and Fox does a pretty good job explaining the changes and trying to show the challenges/ opportunities on each hole - some of the best golf coverage available.  If you are at all interested in golf course architecture, this is an open to watch.

Half the field played themselves out of contention on their first 9 holes.  You can't win the tunamelt on the first day but you can certainly lose it.  It'll be interesting to see how the guys in the afternoon fare based on what they've seen from the earlier groups.

Comments about Tiger coincide with all I've heard and read. I like the comment about being awkward. Who in his upbringing would not be stunted in social graces. But I like to think he has changed. The way he handles himself now shows some growth to me. So I root for his comback that has made golf great again. I hope he is growing socially. But it may be a case of remembering the golfer of 20 years ago.
