OT - Reddit CFB Risk Update 6/13: Another Record Night

Submitted by AmaizeingBlue on

Yesterday we beat the our previous record of active users! We clocked in at 1343 unique players in last night's round. The second most active team is Florida with 633 unique players. Please keep up the participation everyone! There was also a minor game update. The mods locked people's /r/cfb karma meaning that you cannot rank up by acquiring karma (upvotes) on /r/cfb. So now all you have to do everyday is visit our orders website and make your action. That's 2 minutes tops per day.

Moving to the actual results now... We netted one total territory yesterday and are in 3rd place with 18 total territories. Florida is in 1st with 26 and Nebraska is in 2nd with 22. Wisconsin has had unbelievable luck the last 3 days in defending the state of Michigan from us. Eventually that fortress will fall and we will feast in the state of Michigan. Meanwhile, Florida is thriving in the south, Georgia Tech and Clemson are in a battle with OSU on the Atlantic Coast, and Texas is helping hold of Nebraska with Florida.

Steps To Play Every Day:

  1. Sign up for a reddit.com account if you don’t have one already
  2. Visit https://flair.redditcfb.com/ " go to “find by conference," click “FBS” then “Big 10” and finally “Michigan” to set yourself as a member of our team. Click “Update Flair” to set it.
  3. Visit https://michigancfbrisk.com/ and click “Get Order!”
  4. Click the blue chessboard beneath the logo that you’re meant to attack/defend to take you to the game.
  5. Scroll down, now, and on the right hand side of the screen, you will see the options that you can attack or defend. Click the school logo that you were assigned to

Do not ever attack any territory that is owned by one of our allies unless specifically told to do so in your orders. Our allies are Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, and Texas. If you get an order to attack an ally owned territory then it means we are coordinating with them, so it is acceptable. Otherwise, do not attack allied territories or defend territories that allies border please!

Make sure you aren't flagged as a bot

One potential issue with the influx of new users we had is that some players may have been flagged as a bot and therefore their actions may not be counting. If you are flagged as a bot you will see the image below on vote.redditcfb.com

If you are seeing that message follow the steps below, otherwise you can ignore this.

  1. Follow the link shown in the screenshot above and fill out the google form
  2. Wait at least one day for the text box to disappear. If it does disappear, you are all set.
  3. If the bot disclaimer message persists after one day, then message the mods of /r/cfbrisk directly. You can follow the link in step 4 below to do this in one easy click.
  4. https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FCFBRisk&subject=&message=
  5. Be patient as the mods of the game are busy and they are putting a lot of effort into running this thing.

If you click on the little purple speech bubble icon that's in the middle after you get an order, it will take you to the discord. You might have to create a discord account if you don't already have one. From there we can get you vetted and into our group discussions, where we have some tools to analyze results and keep track of how many users have gotten orders.

Friends, keep getting your orders from https://michigancfbrisk.com/ and submitting those orders to the game.  I have a strong feeling that we can achieve greatness if we keep our numbers up.  All the battles are probability-weighted so it takes a few turns to really see big changes on the map due to our newly embiggened army.

Capture and hold Madagascar and you win at Risk.... at least that's how it worked in the old days.

Our group had a guy who always went for Australia right away, even if it were contested. So, reasoning that the key to the game was to try and amass armies early without getting into serious conflict while always taking one territory per turn, I'd try and hold SA if I could, or hole up in Madagascar or NA with access to Greenland (someone always tries to take Europe early and loses quickly - that person is a great source of bonus cards). But I suspect this game works very differently because we don't seem to lose armies after lost conflicts - everyone can still play. I'll just take orders and not pretend I can help with strategy. Unfortunately, even though I've had a Reddit account for a long time, I'm not much of a poster, so I'll only be one star to deploy.

you are attacking the territory that is assigned to a team, regardless of who currently owns it

so the other day I attacked Louisville when OSU held it

I had to choose attack Louisville so it knew which OSU held territory I was attacking

need to follow the orders

Don’t ignore your assignments. Each territory is named after a team and each team is only named after one territory each. By attacking OSU every time, you’re attacking the same territory over and over. OSU may not even control that territory!

Some general questions (from someone that has just been blindly following orders):

  1. How does michigancfbrisk.com determine orders?
  2. Can we see what "rolls" occur each night? (the equivalent of dice rolling in Risk)
  3. Is there a more thorough explanation to how the game works?

Mod here! Let me try to answer your questions:

1) Michigancfbrisk.com is a creation by our very own BlueScar, who is a whiz with technology. Basically, on the back end we mods discuss (with some input from the masses and allies) and assign the expected stars in the proportion we want. The website then does some calculation based on the orders its given out already and the distribution we want and gives you your selected order. This is why it's important that everybody follow their orders, as each order is dependent on the other orders already given out.

2) If you want an in-depth look at the "rolls" on each territory, click on the territory on the map, then scroll down and click on the logo for the day you want to see. For instance, if you want to see the bad luck we had in Toledo last night, click on it, then click on Day 44. From there you can see a list of users and stars from all teams that voted on that territory, with the randomly-selected MVP (to determine the winning team) at the top.

3) The (somewhat updated) rules to the game can be found here: https://vote.redditcfb.com/rules.php. It's not the most straightforward explanation but it explains the general mechanics of the game.

Good news, bad news on twitter the karma freeze. Bad news is I’ll only ever be a 2 star in this game. Good news is I can go back to not reading reddit.
