Let's Play a Stupid Game to Make Our Rivals Unhappy Comment Count

Seth

[UPDATE 6/12: it worked, details in the thread they post every day. Remember to get your marching orders and keep hammering until 7/3.]

If you haven’t noticed on the board, all summer we’ve been playing a game of internet Risk versus the rest of college football on Reddit. Last night—as part of what I’m sure Craig Ross will attribute to the Capron Conspiracy—Michigan got hosed by the luck aspect of the game as Ohio State won a bunch of 80-20 contests and swept the 50-50 ones. In retaliation, I would like the MGoCommunity to descend upon this game like a plague of locusts on a bespoke football content magazine.

A cadre of users are standing by to coordinate this attack, and I’m offering 200 MGoPoints to the daily MVP, plus a copy of any back edition of Hail to the Victors to five random soldiers if we win the thing by July 3. Join us (for like 2 minutes) as we make a frivolous digital map maize and blue with five easy steps:

  1. Sign up for a reddit.com account if you don’t have one already
  2. Visit https://flair.redditcfb.com/ " go to “find by conference," click “FBS” then “Big 10” and finally “Michigan” to set yourself as a member of our team. Click “Update Flair” to set it.
  3. Visit https://michigancfbrisk.com/ and click “Get Order!”
  4. Click the blue chessboard beneath the logo that you’re meant to attack/defend to take you to the game.
  5. Scroll down, now, and on the right hand side of the screen, you will see the options that you can attack or defend. Click the one that you were assigned to.

Emphasis on #3 because we want this to be coordinated and don’t want people attacking our allies like Clemson, GT, Florida, and Texas.

It's a little bit wonky. This is what you have to do:

1. Click Update Sub Karma.
2. Click Update Rating twice.

You should then see all your stats update.

That said, the only karma that they count is your karma on CFB. So if you have 500 karma total, but not all of that was gained on the CFB subreddit, then you don't have 500 karma for the game. It's only your CFB karma.

Sorry, just started playing and setup an account to ask these questions.  Why am I getting orders to attack a team that is already defeated?  Is our organization site hacked?

The orders are referencing the territories to attack. Every team started the gaming owning their single home territory. Then as the game progresses enemy teams take over land and kill other teams. For example, Penn State is dead and Michigan owns the Penn State territory. Meaning that we want to "Defend Penn State".

If your order was to "Attack Cincinnati" that means we want you to attack the Cincinnati homeland that Ohio State currently owns. In order to do this you will want to look for the Cincinnati logo under the "Attack" column on the game page.

With as long as this has been going on, if I could put money on College Gameday doing a feature on Reddit CFB Risk in week 1, I would bet the house.

I can hear Rece's intro now:  "Even in the offseason, college football fans are passionate and find a way to take it to their rivals.  The online community Reddit (said with emphasis and small pause) became a host to the popular board game Risk (same emphasis and pause) - but in this game each team was represented by a popular college football team.  With more here's someone who's schtick has long run out like Kenny Mayne."

Question: the "How to Play" link says the star rating is the median of 5(?) separate star rating groups:

  • Time since your first /r/CFB comment
  • Comment karma on /r/CFB
  • Awards earned
  • Turns played in this game
  • Relevant /r/CFB links visited

However, when I look at my profile I only have stars for the bottom 4 categories and the top says "Tenure updates at end of day." What does this mean?

For anyone out there who wants to do more for the cause, jump on r/CFB and participate in the various discussions (in a meaningful way) to earn karma.  MGoPoints may mean nothing, but just 50 karma will earn you to two stars in that category.  Since 5 turns played will earn you two stars in another category, the median result (1/1/2/2/5) will be a promotion to two stars on the battlefield.

I'm pleased to see that the MGoArmy has helped the cause over on reddit. The damned Buckeyes can't win forever. Hopefully we can swing the game in our favor or - at least - ensure that our allies win with cruelty over the hateful Reds.
