MGOBLOG 3.0 sticky for bugs

Submitted by Seth on

We are using this thread to collect all the (fixable) feedback for the new site in one spot, and if you're seeing it on the main page it means I've updated the OP content.

If you've noticed any bugs in the site post them here and if you have constructive criticism we very much appreciate it. The developers are also going to be in this thread. Even if we can't always respond, you're being heard.

UPDATE 8/23/2018:

We met at HUEL HQ today and worked through a lot of things.

THINGS THAT GOT FIXED

1. You are now able to edit your account info (and your avatar) by clicking on your account name while logged in. Eventually your history and more (see below) will be tabbed from a single user page but this was the quick fix for now.

2. The points issue is still the top priority that they're working on. We're one step further and testing a possible fix in a test environment right now.

3. Next week or so we'll have the ability to vote on Diaries and Board posts (the OPs) themselves. Could have launched today but we wanted to move it from where they were appearing but it works on the dev environment.

THINGS WE ARE FIXING

Please note that while this is a priority tree it's not necessarily the order things will get fixed. We have multiple developers who have their different skills and as each comes free from a project they grab the next highest one they can handle.

1. Points problems

The issue seems to be in the module we wrote for counting points:

Voting module.PNG

Now that they've narrowed it down we have high hopes of getting to the root of the situation.

Lastly IF YOUR POINTS WERE RESET TO ZERO please post in here and let us know 1) A little bit about your points history, 2) When you lost them (was it during the transition), and anything else that can help us track down whatever behavior is creating this. We can't fix this because we don't know why or to what class it's happening to.

(new) 2. User permission issues.

So right now at 100 points you should be able to vote and post new threads, and at 500 points you should be able to post diaries and edit wikis.

THIS IS NOT WORKING because of an issue with the core module. We are trying a fix that might make everything work right away.

It's a permissions issue. What's supposed to happen is once you hit a points threshold you are automatically bumped up to the next user level. It's not doing the bumping because of the "Actions" module, which comes with Drupal. Now that we've identified where the problem is we're working on a patch.

2. Embedding youtubes and tweets automatically by posting a link

So because of site security we have to use Oembeds. There is a module for Drupal 8 for this but it's a paid service, which with our volume is cost-prohibitive (like they want tens of thousands of dollars per month so screw those guys).

So we're going to develop something. We would prefer to have a system that automatically turns a link you post into an image or youtube or twitter embed. That's a better long-term solution and putting something in place in the meantime would cost us time and resources we'd rather put toward more permanent changes. It's a high priority so we just ask for patience now to be paid off with a better final product than the old site had.

For now you can still post these with regular html tags and most sites will give you the source code if you can't remember how to write <img> tags in html language. We had the option to change the post-a-picture box in the comment editor with the ability to post a link instead of upload an image to our site, but we didn't want to lose that ability to post to our site since it's a feature we really wanted for the new site.

3. Side rail becoming unglued.

I've seen it and several users have as well but we haven't had a developer get into it yet because it doesn't happen too often.

4. "Continue Reading" links on front page will jump to the break tag, not the top of the article.

Another thing on the list for a dev to get to.

5. Comments bubble should link to comments

Right now it goes to the top of the article in article view.

6. Voting shows totals not aggregate

We have to rewrite the module ourselves.

7. (new) Latest post timestamp behavior

Haven't looked into it yet but it's a known issue that the latest post says there's something from a few minutes ago and there isn't. It may be bots causing this behavior.

8. (new) Clicking on a comment in a readers' post history should take you to that post.

Moderators need this.

9. (new) Some content is breaking containers

Design issue. When designer gets back from maternity leave we'll get an estimate.

10. (new) We are developing a "User Page" that will be tabbed thusly:

  • Change your user info (name, email, avatar, password)
  • See your recent post history
  • See replies to your posts
  • Your points history

Most excited about the second-to-last one, which is one of many new properties we plan to add that the old site missed.

Things Over the Horizon

1. Showing New comments in a thread as "New"

We got an estimate of big money to rent a specialist in order to build out this module. This is the next big project after we get the points figured out. Personally I wanted to address it sooner but more people complained about points so that got moved ahead. Be mad at the people who complained about points because it's all their fault.

2. Changing Scroll Behavior

We had a specialist look at this and what's happening is a problem with the order things are loaded. When you post a new comment the page DOES take you to your just-posted comment, but then it loads other comments and that pushes your screen down. If you use the up or down arrows it should take you right back to your comment. This is a problem buried deep and got another big expensive estimate to fix. So we have to wait.

(updated) 3. Apps

The process has begun. We might have a couple of light ones first then more developed ones later. FYI the problem with the old apps is they were not built to play nice with the site. If they worked great on your phone that was because they were downloading the whole site before you went to read it, and that was placing a huge drain on our resources and causing the site crashes. We will have apps and I hope to have a timeline in a few weeks. The latest is there's a drupal module we're going to try. Maybe it'll work the first time with no kinks.

(updated) 4. Saving User Preferences

We want comment settings to stick permanently for each user. Right now it resets when you post a comment. This is a BIG fix so it comes after we get other things done.

Also they're working on a bunch of functions we need internally, like the process for creating breaks, windows live writer issues, and lightbox for UFRs.

I'm still at 288 points and still being told I need 100 points to create new posts.  Would also love to be able to revert my username back to what it was before the site migration changed it on me.

Any updates regarding the diary issue? I'm sitting on one I'm trying to post because I needed OpenLive to make it look nice but OpenLive won't let me publish

OK, it's football off-season...  Can I please, PLEASE get the ability to up/down vote back?  Can someone devote a little time to that for me? I've got 690-something points, but I still don't see the up/down vote options, except in other people's screenshots of what they see.

Feel free to neg me down to 499 then bump me back over 500 and see if it resets.  Feel free to neg me down to negative-whatever, then bump me back up and see if that's what it takes.  Abuse my account like the red-headed step child I am, I do not mind.  Otherwise this site will continue sliding off my frequent visits, when I otherwise used to visit 5+ times every day, even if I didn't comment, even when the posts were about freaking draftageddon.

Thanks.

Hmmmm this is a bug we thought had been fixed. We're looking into it.

If anyone else is still experiencing this issue - chime in and let us know what you're seeing from the board post. Do the thumbs up, thumbs down icons appear and you're not able to use them? Or is it that the icons don't appear at all on comments?

To Human Element:

I recall mentioning in October that this was still a problem. I recall being told it'd be fixed lickety split. I recall asking in November just how said repair work was going. I don't recall being told the bug was ever fixed...

The relative lack of recent complaints doesn't mean the voting problem has gone away--it means that after nearly eight months, people have lost faith in your ability or desire to fix it.

Looking for feedback from our friends that did not have the ability to vote - I'm seeing a lot of posts and comments communicating that this ability was restored. Is there anyone who is STILL unable to vote / doesn't see the thumbs up and down buttons?

One easy one:

When in the comment editor, if you try to embed anything using the toolbar (using Inser Media Embed) it tries to call out to noembed.com over HTTP. This is disallowed since mgoblog.com is loaded over HTTPS. You need to change the call to happen over HTTPS.

Have y'all thought about open sourcing the code behind the site? I bet at least a few folks would be happy to fix bugs for you.

While Drupal is open source, this is a highly customized version of it - which is also why permanent solutions aren't always immediately available to seemingly common issues.

That said, the information users have provided us in bringing these issues to light, and possible fixes for them has been super helpful. So please don't take that remark as one that is to dissuade you, or others, from continuing to provide insight.

As for the embed issue, because of YOU we were able to make a simple edit and believe it is now fixed. Can you confirm on your end?

Lately there has been an ad that covers the menu bar at the top of my screen while using my iPhone SE. fortunately I have the main page and the board bookmarked, but having an ad block your site navigation is not a good thing.

This probably won’t go over well but have you guys thought about removing points altogether? It seems a lot of the issues and work is being done to fix the points. Would people leave the site if they didn’t have points? I can’t imagine that. The first update said that something got pushed back because more people complained about points. This makes my brain hurt. I had to hit the bold button to make the fucking keyboard pop up just to type this and people are worried about how many fake internet points they have here? Are there more teenagers on here than I thought? Just make a 3 month account requirement to start a thread to limit the trolls. The mobile site is a mess still and most people have offered to pay whatever for an app, yet points are the biggest problem. I get that is is probably a get off my lawn post but I just don’t get it.

Mobile is getting unusable due to more and more and more intrusive ads. They cover the nav by default and the newest ones take more than half the screen on a Xr. I get that the site needs to generate revenue, just pointing out that due to the mid-2000s MySpace appearance of the ads on mobile, I've stopped accessing the site with it completely, so you might be suffocating your users.

I agree with Born in A2. This is a thing and it's pretty annoying, especially when an ad covers the navigation buttons. I have an iphone SE and it does it pretty frequently. I have the board and the main page bookmarked and that's how I work around it, but it's still a pretty bad bug when your ads prevent site navigation.

Now that hockey, basketball, and spring football have concluded, will there be updates on the features still in development or a rough timeline for when they may be live?

Points seem to work as expected now (aside from any new user or someone who didn't have enough points when the transition occurred -- those users never accumulate points no matter how many posts or upvotes they receive) which had been identified as a big thing to some.

I think more important to most, though, are things like the ability to lock in the number of posts per page, oldest/newest sort setting, having new posts marked as such (NEW!), and being able to click on a post in someone's user page and be taken directly to that post, even if that post does not appear within the first 50 replies to a thread (currently you just get dumped at the beginning of the thread). Oh and editing OPs (being able to edit posts was nice to get back!).

I also think in the mgoboard page it would be nice for the thread author to get a column as well. Lastly, a comment box at the bottom of the replies to a thread or front page post would make sense, IMO. You can keep the one immediately underneath the OP or FPP but I think it makes a lot of sense to also have one at the end so that you can make a response after reading through all the replies.

Thanks!

I noticed something last night. All new posters and those who didn't have some certain threshold of points when the site was changed over do not accumulate points no matter how many times they post or upvotes they receive. This has been known for some time.

However, yesterday Seth banned user 1201 (suspected to be yet another Maizen account) and then unbanned him after 1201 complained up a storm. I noticed that right away 1201 started accumulating points for his posts and various upvotes and downvotes (mostly downvotes).

Was this just a weird glitch or is there more to it? If a user is created, banned, and then unbanned, does this allow them to finally accumulate points?

Side rail is missing linking to Diaries and MGoBoard posts.  When it happens, usually can find sections at the end of the main stories.  Now is not even there - have to go to the drop-down.

I'm getting a large vertical add underneath the User Login section in the sidebar when I'm not logged in, and it pushes the navigation header down to the bottom of the ad, leaving a big blank blue space below the MGOBLOG banner. It seems to get fixed when I'm logged in. I'm on the most recent version of Chrome.

The show 25/50/100 posts seems to be broken.  I reset mine to 100....shows 50.  This may be listed above, my apologies if it is.

MH20

July 27th, 2019 at 11:13 AM ^

Unfortunately this setting only lives for the particular thread you have open. Think of each thread you have open as a separate session. Each time a new session begins that posts per page setting resets back to 50. It's a known bug that was identified to be corrected last summer. I'm not sure a timeline has been mentioned for it (or the other known issues) to be fixed.

Now, if this is happening to you while staying on the same thread, as in, you open a thread, change to 100 but it still stays on 50, I think that would be a new bug.

As this hasn't been updated in almost a year, I'm not optimistic I'll get a reply, but I figured I'd try.

Any chance any of the things in the last update that haven't been fixed ever will be?

As far as I can tell we're still waiting on 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10. Also there was talk from (Seth?) that a basic app would be developed over the summer.

Should we be looking forward to this stuff, or is what we have what we're going to get because Brian just doesn't want to do it anymore?

And it's not on the list, but seriously, are our preferences ever going to get saved so we don't keep defaulting to 50 posts per page in the comments? Even if the default was upped to 100 it would be a huge help. Not to mention fixing it so commenting or replying doesn't dump us to the last page of comments in the post.

Just came to say this very thing. Here is my page really really small so you can see the issue. I assume everyone is experiencing it. That's pretty annoying.

Experiencing this behavior in Chrome, IE, and Firefox. Also on mgoblog.com and www.mgoblog.com

EDIT: Is this item 3 on the bug list? It seems to be a thing now.

3. Side rail becoming unglued.

Another long-time issue just returned earlier this evening: points are broken.  Despite making several posts and dishing out a few negvotes, no change in points.

Maybe that's the point of MGoBlog 3.0 -- expecting to ever again have all the features that you liked about MGoBlog 2.0 or asking the moderators why the point system can't be completely fixed, or why clicking on a post in your profile won't immediately take you to that post in the thread, or why you can't see both the number of upvotes and the number of downvotes for a post, instead of just seeing the net total of the votes, or why there isn't a way to see whether you've previously voted on a post, or why there's no way to identify posts that you've already read (among several other things, like why there can't be a list of links to websites related to all of the University of Michigan's sports teams, the Big Ten Conference and the athletic programs for each of the individual schools in the Big Ten) is like . . .

I realize this is not a bug, but can you get rid of the Pitbull banner?  It's football season, and that's about as OT as any content can get.  And it's really ugly.  Thanks.

When I try to log in on mobile or reset the password (iOS, Safari) I am told my username is unrecognized. I suspect this has to do with the spaces or apostrophe in the username, but that is a pure guess. Anyone else having this issue?
