MGOBLOG 3.0 Voting Question/Issue ?
So every now and again when I go into a thread it appears that some post have already been down-voted or up-voted by me - the way i can tell is the thumbs up or thumbs down is blue instead of white, indicating that I have "voted". Unless I've been sleepwalking and creeping on Mgoblog these votes are not coming from me. Has anyone else been experiencing this issue?
Yes, the "thumb up" icon is blue but I don't believe any vote has been cast, so no one is "ghost voting"...it just appears that way.
Thats where my issue kicks in - sometimes it is blue sometimes it is white. Some times its the up-vote and sometimes its the down-vote. No rhyme or reason - was hoping everyone else was experiencing the same issue.
I hope this new skin was developed for free. If Brian paid for this .....
I work for a company that develops sites. This would never fly.
If you work for a company that develops websites, it should be very obvious to you that Human Element specializes in more of the "back-end" development, stuff like data migrations (which this blog had probably one of the largest data migrations to tackle), software upgrades, custom integrations, etc.
They probably don't specialize in Design/User Experience/Front-end development (even though their marketing website will tell you otherwise), stuff like the look and feel, user interactions, etc. I bet Brian paid a good chunk for the back-end development and the front-end was a secondary priority. Putting money into the data migration is the right place, because losing data would be critical to this site.
Now that a solid foundation is in place from the upgrade, getting the back-end stuff solid, they can (and should) switch their attention to the front-end/user experience/design stuff that they didn't spend enough time on.
Unfortunately, all of us users only see/understand the front-end and don't understand the herculean effort that went on in the back-end. Me, being a developer who focuses on the front-end, I see and agree with all of the frustrations but also see both ends of the spectrum and cut them some slack.
I'm sure some updates are coming, now just hope that they find the right person to make the user interface/layout fixes.
Well......you dont live anywhere near Ann Arbor now do you?
I vote you.
I’m in West Michigan and more than willing to help, if Brian and company needed it. If Human Element can handle it, then more power to them. I’m not interested in taking other people’s work from them.
It's nice to see smart people weigh in and explain it to dumb people like me.
This is very helpful and hopeful. Thank you.
So what was the expectation in the beta tester phase? If there was a serious investment with delays on the back end without coordination on UI, where is the disconnect? Project management. I wouldn't go live with a half assed project. Would you? Granted, I am not a web guy, just a systems integrator.
There is a high probability that there are interface updates in the queue. But I don’t know because nobody from staff has informed us.
i also know many frustrations are because there is a new way to do things, which is fine. But nobody from staff is making a daily post on the ‘how to’s in 3.0.
how hard could these things be? I would rather see these posts than unverified veracity if they need to carve out time from current responsibilities
I don't even understand how to vote. Do you need to have a certain number of points now? I see nothing to vote.
I don't see any way to upvote/downvote either. No blue or white thumbs on the laptop or on the iPhone. Luckily I only come here to read content. Now that I can allegedly login on both devices maybe I can get back to reading some...
It feels like this project has a lengthy punch list. Count me as one that finds the excessive white space and thin fonts now here and also on a number of other contemporary websites irritating. Note web builders: this is not a design trend consumers like.
No, but it’s a design Brian and the advertisers like. The Brian dude got greedy.
Speaking of ads, I'm seeing zero/nil/nada ads. Which seems odd if you're trying to make money from advertising.
Oh yeah? I have some men's panties I can sell you.
Thank God I’m not the only one seeing those ads! I mean, I’m a pickle! I’d look ridiculous in those things.
True - the design trend is not what consumers like, or want. But it's what designers want because everybody is doing it - it's the designery trend... I dislike that Mac has made OSX look and feel more like iOS. But they have because Jony Ive (the designer) is more infatuated with himself and what he likes, than with whatever mere customers may like. And (like it, or not) Apple leads UX design trends; hence, here we are.
I doubt Brian or his staff want anything to do with giving us a poor effort. Contrary - I'd bet money Brian wants this to work without problems more than all of us, combined. But I don't think HUEL did him right... A punch-list of do-overs after a big rework is expected, and doesn't bother me. But some of the items have just completely missed the mark (white space, no app, many clicks to the board, etc)...
I dunno, maybe Brian wanted it more difficult to find the MGoBoard, to tamp down some of the complaining after a loss? Haa!! I wouldn't blame for that!!
Is Human Element what used to be Fry Multimedia?
Definitely some of the same people. That's almost unavoidable in a "small" town. I worked at Fry and recognize some of the people on the HuEl site - but not most of them.
We posters also have to realize that we are (I think) only a small percentage of the blog's readers. I'm largely ignorant of this stuff, but I believe a view of the blog that includes posting generates no more money than a view of the blog that does not include posting. The redesign of the blog might cause a net increase in views even if it decreases visits to the blog by long-time posters. I vaguely remember Brian saying at the end of the Hoke era that another blogger had reminded him that posters aren't any more valuable as customers than readers who don't post.
This is a good point. Non-posters may well accrue many more site visits than posters, but I (we) have no way of knowing. In any case, it is more difficult (well, kinda...) to hit the Board than it probably should be.
Except posters are creating content for free. Oftentimes not *great* content, but I read the board for years before I started posting.
I'll also note that for those of us viewing on a computer, we are definitely not the target audience. It's clear that responsive (read: designed for phones) UI was the focus. In my experience, the more UI/UX is tuned for phones, the worse it looks/works on computers....
I went all-in with Mac (iPhone 8+ and MacBook Pro) about two years ago. With the exception of build quality on the MacBook Pro I have been severely disappointed with the experience. The software is less intuitive than I was expecting and my feelings shift between they take customer loyalty for granted at best to they are trying to rip me off at worst. If I was into shorting stocks, AAPL would be on the list.
Short AAPL? Is that a long or short term play?
My family and I have been very fortunate with AAPL and the tech segment in general.
If they are on tiny screens with salami fingers they do. I am not one of those people.
The thumbs are all and always blue for me on IE 11. And some screen elements don't render correctly. I just tried to login on Edge to check there, but can't. Copied/pasted my password to make sure I wasn't fat-fingering it, but no go. So, yeah, that's not an option.
For something that was a year-plus in the making, uh, Houston, we have a problem. Several, actually.
I think you need to move on from IE 11. Even Microsoft has moved on from that with Edge.
Unfortunately my company hasn't.
That's convenient to say, but I can't even login on Edge, so shitty rendering with the ability to login trumps non-functional login.
Same issue. I have yet to be able to successfully log on from my Galaxy 8 cause it says I havent entered my password correctly. The password I'm entering incorrectly is the same password I've had here since 2010 and is my "go-to" password for any site I dont give two shits about being hacked cause the site doesnt store my CC #s or any personal information.
This morning I had the same experience on my desktop when I tried to log in. After exactly ONE attempt I was told my IP was being shut down for attempting "too many log in attempts from this IP address" and I was instructed to change my password. I tried that, (didnt work), but fortunately about an hour later my go to password DID work so I was able to get on.
Been through a ton of these web overhauls through the years and while they are ALWAYS disliked to some degree I do have to say I find it nothing short of amazing that MGoBlog has been completely silent on user feedback, punch lists for repairs or anything else related to the change for that matter. Total radio silence.
I was fearful we'd be getting something like this when the joke page went up. I think the powers that be and the team behind the redesign were laughing at us then and IMO they are laughing at us now. Cause we dont understand how truly awesome this new site really is.
That has nailed me so many times.. I'm running out of generic passwords..
This is happening to me also where it says to many failed attempts either wait a while or reset the password. Yet i've only tried logging in once. Seems i have it under control now I think. although i haven't gone back and logged on my phone yet. Which it seems will make it do it again when i switch between the platforms.
That's easy. I just always use MeanJoe07
That happened to me on the ipad, cell phone and laptop. I just gave it some time and I was able to log on in all locations.
Just to clarify, I never changed my password, just waited for it to stop freaking out. I was able to log in eventually.
Lol. I have the same problem. I only c@n login on my iPad.
I agree on the white space and thin fonts. It makes an aging guy like me have to squint to read. Reminds me of being in a sterile office space with nothing but white walls.
I actually would like to know the extent of the voting functionality overall. While I haven't experienced the OP's issue yet per se, it does seem like any accrued upvotes / downvotes are slow to get into totals and there is no such function for the thread in general as with the previous site. Now, I know there was chatter about this module not being 100% at time of launch - not working at all for several hours after, in fact - but is this it? That's my question, I guess.
And to take it one step further, I think there would be value in a wider discussion around known bugs, what the guys are tackling to improve the site post go-live etc...
There's lots of chatter by the community and while I can get behind the "mind your own damn business" mindset being a website guy myself, I think that the community has a vested interest in this site and we'd like to know the direction it is going for continuous improvement.
While this may be unnecessarily complicated to pull together, I think a Brian/Seth/HUEL AMA done here, liveblog style, would be super valuable.
Holy moly...I just realized you can't start a thread from your phone.
Something tells me you are responsible for this, stop hacking our MGoBlog accounts!!!
Neg away if needed, but I still can't see the up/down vote icons at all. Any suggestions would be appreciated. And yes, I am logged in. Is it a browser issue? I am using Chrome.
Chrome user here on MacOS. I can see the up.down vote icons, but I sometimes see the weird blue thumb issues described by others.
I believe it's a points issue, as I (and other posters with point totals in the triple digits and below) am in the same boat.
Me neither. Is that because I don't have enough points to vote or what?
I just gave you a +1 to get you over 500. Not sure if this is the threshold or not. Can you see them now?
I can see them (and gave you an up) but my 3-digit point total is a bit higher than some others. Maybe there's an unknown cutoff point?
And I've seen a blued-in up thumb on a post that I didn't vote on, or even see before. When I click on the blue thumb it increased the vote number. Click again, and the number decreases and the thumb goes back to white.
I used to have a car where the radio only worked if you hit the bottom of the dash with something heavy. Maybe I need to try that here.
I don't even see an option to vote at all? I feel dumb- where is it?
