OT - Reddit CFB Risk Update 6/5:

Submitted by ReegsShannon on

We've had some solid progress since MGoBlog went all Geocities. We continued pushing back towards the midwest while also having pockets of Michigan territory elsewhere to cause chaos / assist ouar allies. Clemson was briefly in a dangerous spot with only one territory but they've rebounded and can work towards crushing that bit of OSU land. Florida has also started to burst out after being hunkered down in their peninsula a bit, so they should be able to start making a swath down south.

There was also a bit of drama that went down. The mods proposed a rule change where teams would get multipliers based on owning portions of a conference. However, we quickly realized that this would greatly benefit Nebraska since the West Coast has two easily attainable conferences (Pac 12 and MWC). Whereas we get screwed on the east coast due to the ACC being spread out everywhere. So we pushed back and the rule change was canceled.

Please do not post about your assignments in the thread below. Trying to keep everything a little bit more secure after our mole issue.

Announcements:

The "Blue Alliance" has been re-dubbed the "Allied Forces" and now consists of Michigan, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida, and Texas.  If you aren't using the website to get orders, then please refrain from attacking any territories controlled by our allies.

If you are a relatively new reddit user, please check the game page to ensure that you are not being flagged as a bot. If you are flagged you will see a text box like the one below. If you are flagged as a bot, your turns will not assist our chances to win (although you can still accumulate turns so you can level up stars). If you see this box, then follow the hyperlink to fill out the survey, but ALSO message /u/bakonydraco directly on reddit to get the issue sorted out.

Instructions to Join:

To join all you need to do is go to reddit.com/r/cfb and create an account if you don't already have one. Next, set your flair to Michigan. You can do this by clicking "Select Flair" on the right side of the cfb subreddit. Finally, you can join and play the game at https://vote.redditcfb.com/cfbrisk.php

If you want to discuss the game in deeper detail and strategize with us, you can join our discord server found here: https://discord.gg/NZTdhta. We usually announce plans of what we want to attack/defend in the evenings, but we discuss strategy all day. Be warned though, there will be a vetting process to join the discord as we have had some mole issues from OSU. Even if you don’t pass the vetting process, we can still provide less-secret instructions in the general chat so that you can still help us towards our goals until we can fully 100% trust you.

Go Blue!

Instructions as to how to play:

At the beginning of the game. Every team was assigned one single territory, and so every territory is now named after that team. When you go to select an action in the game, you'll see option such as:

"Defend Buffalo", "Attack Penn State", "Attack Kent State".

This means that we border the location that was originally assigned to Penn State and Kent State. If you choose to attack Penn State, you will attempt to take that piece of land next round. Defend Buffalo, means that we currently own Buffalo's original homeland, and defending Buffalo means putting your stars towards keeping Buffalo from being taken.

After you submit what you're doing for the day, just sit back at wait! At Midnight EST all of the picks from all of the teams go in, and a random number generator selects a winner for each territory. Then it all happens again tomorrow.

The map has looked the same forever it seems. Does this thing ever end? Asking for a friend.

Well, one turn a day makes things move slowly, but significant advancement have been made in last few days. Now have Alabama on the ropes and have freed allies Texas and Clemson from attack. Steadily marching west to threaten Nebraska.

CLEMSON IS NOT OUR FUCKING ALLY. Look at the map today, they took half of New England from us and now BC is our only safe territory. I am only attacking Clemson territory from now on.

I like this idea and have just started "playing" about a week ago.  Observations:

  • My orders have made zero strategic sense, and I am a risk afficianado. Our "generals" need to be fired.  I am making my own decisions based on what is actually smart. This is also known as mutiny.
  • We should be 100% focused on preserving our hold on the new england "peninsula".  Clemson just tore us a new one because our orders were defending outlying areas with zero strategic benefit. Which brings me to:
  • The "alliances" are complete BS. Whoever is "in charge" of Clemson that we are coordinating with is either outright lying or has zero pull with his constituents
  • The jury is still out on whether the rules of the game make any sense at all.  I am leaning towards "no".
  • I am very pleased with the new site. Looking forward to voting capability on the board.

You're free to do as you wish, but the game is not like Risk at all. What makes sense in Risk wouldn't necessarily make sense in this game.

Also re: Clemson, They had 1 rogue member attack each spot. It wasn't coordinated at all. One player was brand new and the other hadn't played in 20 days. We will be able to get it back just fine, we are 4x as powerful as they are and have literally been our lapdogs so far.

Since this game is 100% based on a RNG I doubt this game really progresses much at this point. The field has been boiled down and the alliances are big enough that no one is going to be eliminated. That means territories will just keep randomly changing hands. There will be swells and swoons. People will get excited and disappointed but in the end it's all just shifting sands at this point. That's why they keep trying to tweak the rules.

To those who know more about this game than I do:

Any idea why the risk bot has been sending me PMs to input my vote that past two days when I'be already done so?

Can someone explain something about the rules?  Does it matter how many users go into a battle or does it simply matter, if you have the strongest members in the battle?

Im a 2 Star that will likely never get to 3, do I even count?

It matters how many weighted stars go into battle.  1/2/3/4/5 stars are increasingly weighted in battle.  There is no weight for a one or two star; there is weight for 3/4/5 stars.  So you do count, but get your third star for some weight and then you can relax.
