Post M v Wisc lamenting thread

Submitted by San Diego Mick on

Bummer game, frustrating to watch, too many bad shots, bad passes and another lacking performance from Nik. What's wrong with him lately, I hope he wakes the hell up soon, if we're gonna do anything worthwhile, we need a stellar Nik, not nonchalant Nik.

Start playing basketball closer to tip-off.

There was a lot of resilience in shaving that 18 point deficit down to a 3 point deficit, but in the end it was too little way too late.

Maybe Nebraska can do us a solid and beat MSU.

could have played a lot better- we will need him against Sparty.  And I hope Horford/Morgan figure out how to play post defense in the next 7 days

I'll admit I'm a pretty casual fan when it comes to basketball, but when was the last time we had a post game on either side of the floor? Our bigs just seem so small out there and non-physical. I don't want to rag on Morgan or Horford but I just feel like we have no inside presence and haven't in years.

I think we can say with near certainty that they will show up big time, and possibly even beat Sparty. Then the very next game...'Bueller?'...Very frustrating and it makes it hard to anticipate any sort of deep tourney run.

I'm not one to question coaching much, but seemed pretty obvious that they should've started doubling Kaminski after he beat Morgan twice in a row late in the game (even if that meant risking a kick out J).

This is the third straight game where we fell flat on our face to start. If they want to do anything in the tournament this can't happen. This is like Nik's fifth bad game in a row. Other teams finally have figured out how to guard him. That means somebody has to step up and right now that looks like Caris.

We would be 10-3 going into sparty before the season everyone would have taken it. Yes, bad start today but give wiscy some credit. They are a good team, came out hot and had an answer for everything. There will be lulls in the season and if ours is going 2-3 in a tough 5 game stretch then I can live with that. This team has gotten a lot out of what we have.

There was nothing about that game I didn't hate. From the tip-off to letting those thugs in buzzcuts run away with the game to playing like their heads were firmly up their behinds on both offense and defense. I'll give them that they didn't quit but this game was a comprehensive failure. Whatever magic sauce the guys found after a similarly uneven run last year would sure be nice now.

What's the answer on post D?  We get owned in the post.

Frieder and Fisher's teams were very good at instantly doubling the deep post without leaving open three looks . . . albiet with generally more athletic and older players.

Don't know what Beilein can do at this point, but if Payne has 10 seconds alone with the ball deep in the post every time, we are going to lose no matter if we shoot well on the other end or not.

play better.  they constantly let kaminski catch and go to his right hand.  overplay that.  or front him on occasion.  they let him get wayyyyy to comfortable.

that said, i would have liked to see caris be the guy to help out on occasion since jackson is not a good shooter.

imo, gr3 has never been a good help defender.  on that one drive from kaminski from the 3, gr3 stood there and watched him blow past morgan for the layup.  if he takes one step toward the basket, he gets a charge.

We typically do double down low. But we seemed really concerned about the kick out. And for good reason. They killed us on that in the first half. Kaminsky was on fire and was a tough assignment since he could drive, shoot from the outside, and kick. We will definitely have to do a better job against Payne.

Going from memory . . . State, Wisky, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio State, maybe even Purdue, all had good games against us in the post the last two years where it looked like we had no answer.  I won't even mention Kansas and Lousiville, that's not fair.  But it has been our weakness - defending the post on D and attacking the post on O.

in the B1G. Need to play for a better seeding in the tournament.

Doing well in the tournament is a bigger boast to recruiting than winning the B1G.

I have always been impressed by Ryan's teams that they really don't travel, charge, move on picks, etc. on the offensive end, it's hard to get mad at the officials. But not today. Down the stretch they were masters of the: ball fake, move both feet, then dribble. They had 4 in a row that were pretty obvious travels. I just don't get it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Caris as the focal point on offense right from the start. He can get around any defender, which no other player on our team can do. He'll turn the ball over more, but are turnovers really worse than end of shot clock heaves? Teams are game-planning for Nik, and he can't get free. He's going to have to come back next year in phenomenal shape and play off screens like Reggie Miller or Rip Hamilton.

i wonder if beilein is going to break out the two-man game for nik/caris come tourny time.  have them set picks for each other than dish and drive or kick out for the 3.  not sure how teams could defend that.

It's very frustrating that in Beilein's time here our big men continue to be liabilities at both ends of the floor.
