Open Thread: USA vs. Russia
Hello out there, we're on the air, it's hockey...morning today
Should be a good one as two medal favorites face off - USA vs the host Russians. Datsyuk is not playing at 100% for Russia, but of course they still have a ton of scoring talent on the team.
USA vs. Russia - 7:30 EST, NBCSN
For anyone in Chicago, the Michigan bar "Diag" is open for the game.
USA! USA! USA!

when we played an exhibition against the Soviets at MSG and got our asses handed to us. I also was fortunate to witness the Miracle on Ice - from Bursley Hall. Hated the Soviets then and still do. Hope our NHL player’s hand the Russians their asses.
Hope we see a lot of this today:

This is going to be weird watching an important hockey game so damn early.

Gold medal game is same time next Sunday, FYI.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:21 AM ^
At least they're played on the weekend. I'm going to be optimistic and just plan on Team USA playing in that game.

Seems like now the Canadians aren't too bashful about railing on the Russians when they don't get called after the luge shenanigans. Definitely was a penalty.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:15 AM ^
What happened?
February 15th, 2014 at 8:26 AM ^
Orpik got boarded pretty blatantly by Ovechkin. You could see on the replay that it was pretty close to being his chin landing on that inexplicable plastic shoulder they put halfway up the boards. You'll see a play or two end like that in the NHL per month it seems and it pretty much always ends in multi game suspensions.
Not exactly as this one went down below, but it's close enough for illustrative purposes. Orpik was closer to stationary and Ovechkin was approaching closer to perpendicular to the boards.

Second period starts with US on power play for 1:24.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:13 AM ^
The US needs more sustained pressure in the Russian zone. So far it's been a lot of one shot and done chances.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:19 AM ^
We have no balance in the Red Zone, so to speak.
I just made the same statement that you did, to my son.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:16 AM ^
Go Team USA...Kick some Russian Butt. Don't give Putin his moment of payback.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:32 AM ^
Bad feeling about this PP. Two posts already for Russia
February 15th, 2014 at 8:35 AM ^
Lucky to walk away from that pp. sucks that Phil took a puck off the left hand.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:37 AM ^
My bad Ryan kesler.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:38 AM ^
Damn... At least it was Pavel, I guess...
February 15th, 2014 at 8:38 AM ^
Filthy.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:39 AM ^
Damn it Dats. Why are you so good.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:39 AM ^
Pavel is still playing hockey? I find this development shocking.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:39 AM ^
Love Pavel but not today
February 15th, 2014 at 8:40 AM ^
Still half a game of hockey to play!
February 15th, 2014 at 8:40 AM ^
It's a lot more fun to cheer for Pavel than to root against him. Nasty.
February 15th, 2014 at 8:59 AM ^
I was going to post something before the game started along the lines of, "I hope the final is US 4 Russia 1, with Pavel scoring their only goal."
I hope he has great success throughout the Olympics, just not enough to impact the outcome of games in which they play us.

Crap. Come on Kaner
February 15th, 2014 at 9:01 AM ^
with some of the rule differences? Obviously there's no trapezoid rule... what else?
February 15th, 2014 at 9:04 AM ^
No touch icing, goaltenders can play the puck wherever, and on a penalty shot anyone can be selected to take it. Those are the only ones I can think of, but I'm sure there are more.
February 15th, 2014 at 9:06 AM ^
Fighting gets you straight up thrown out I'm pretty sure. So they'll stick to talking after each stoppage like they have been. Looks like no-touch icing is completely enforced as well.
Rest appear to be here: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=703826
February 15th, 2014 at 9:06 AM ^
Automatic icing.
February 15th, 2014 at 9:04 AM ^
One of the few benefits of flying early, yo you get to catch USA Russia live
February 15th, 2014 at 9:06 AM ^
Love flying them...live TV is great
February 15th, 2014 at 9:08 AM ^
All tied up: USA 1, Pavel and the Soviet Oregon Red Ducks 1
It's gonna be a tough 2 minutes, though, at the start of the 3rd with the Russkies on a PP. We survive that and we're in good shape as the better team. From what I'm seeing, both teams are about even on their top 2 lines; it's when the rest of each team is on the ice that it's Advantage USA.
February 15th, 2014 at 9:09 AM ^
The game has looked like slight advantage Russia atleast through two periods. Russian third line has looked pretty good actually.
February 15th, 2014 at 9:08 AM ^
The game has lived up to the hype.
