OT-House of Cards Season 2 Up on Netflix
Brilliant timing for people that have no Valentine's Day plans! Or...those that do and have an awesome significant other willing to marathon a bad-ass show with them!
The show stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and Kate Mara and made history as the first non-TV network show to win an Emmy with David Fincher winning for Best Directing.

Stoked, but I've watched the Michigan beat down of OSU three times in the last week and still getting mileage out of it so toss up which one gets priority.

The show displays a bit of Frank Underwood's internal monologue and the fourth wall is sometimes broken, with him speaking to the viewer, but I consider these neat literary techniques that further and enhance this shady, underhanded, manipulative story.

Agreed. Most of the time, this just comes out by the character telling another character his plans. They just decided to skip that part of it and talk straight to the audience. It makes him seem like a much more despicable character than if he was just telling his wife or his assistant his plans all of the time.

Winning an Emmy doesn't really mean a whole lot in my book, more of a popularity contest. David Fincher is pretty overrated in my book. I enjoyed Seven, The Game and Fight Club, but didn't think any of those movies are as great as people make them out to be. House of Cards fits the Fincher mold for me. Enjoyable, but nothing incredible. I'll probably pass on the second seaon.

Sorry mgodouche, David Fincher is just not for me, and yes his movies in my opinoin are overrated. I didn't even say I hated house of cards, it's just not my cup of tea. The Emmy's are a popularity contest, and if not holding an Emmy winning show in high esteem makes me a hipster, then I guess that's what I am. Thanks for inevitably proving that in every thread on this site there is a douchbag that gets butthurt when someone else shares a different opinion than them.

wow, I can't say I was expecting so much fury. I'm sorry you can't take any ball-busting without throwing a hissy fit - I got a good chuckle out of the typical "this is popular and thus I'm too cool for it" thing.

They killed off my favorite character in season one. I'm still salty about that.

Boardwalk pretty much lost me when they killed off Jimmy Darmody (although I have been paying some attention since). I think the only reason House of Cards can move on more effectively than Boardwalk is because its main character is much more compelling and entertaining than Nucky Thomspon.

Last season of Boardwalk was the best season of the entire series, IMO. Absolutely amazing. Eli Thompson is the real star here, and the way he, Chalky and Richard ended up by the finale, well...no spoilers here, but it was masterfully done.
I about abandoned this show the previous season (the horribly-conceived "Gyp Rosetti" storyline), but I'm glad I stuck with it.
House of Cards is great, and I do enjoy it...but my two cents is that True Detective is the greatest show currently on TV. Episode 4 of this season (the one that aired last Sunday) should win every award that it will inevitably be nominated for.

In fact, your quote -- "that might have been the best hour of TV I've ever watched" -- I said that verbatim to several friends of mine on the Monday following the airing.
Consider this: due to the structure of the show, you KNOW that Rust makes it through the gun fight/chase alive, because of the "modern day" interviews taking place...but that scene STILL manages to hold you in suspense, and I found myself wondering several times, "Is he going to make it?" The six minute, continuous tracking shot is just a masterpiece of direction and filming.

That definitely had me scratching my head. I've noticed that adding a flair of bisexuality/homosexuality is often used to make screen villains more ~complex~ and ~deep~ but it really just confuses the viewer.
Then again, everything is about sex and sex is about power, amirite? Maybe Frank's relationship with his classmate was the only one without a power dynamic.

I remember them talking but I don't remember the details of that conversation. I need to go back and rewatch season 1 before I get into season 2 (my wife and I always go through all of the episodes of GoT before the season starts too).
It seems to me, though, that the relationship with his friend might have been about having power and control over him.

I'll need to re-watch that episode as, well - I'm going off memory. But I think they wanted highlight what was likely Underwood's last true, intimate (not only sexual) relationship. In that space and time, he was closer and more honest with that person than anyone else.

I've been looking forward to this. Think i'll rewatch most of Season 1 this weekend to refresh my memory and then tackle Season 2 next week. Anyone else find Robin Wright very appealing? I hadn't seen her in anything in a while, but i gotta says she's getting it done for a 47 year old.
