SB Rebounds by winning 2 today; Now 3-1

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Softball Team 37 came back strong today at the USF Tourney in Tampa.  The ladies came back from yesterday's heartbreaking 9-4 loss to Florida and a close 3-2 win against USF.  We won both games this morning, 7-1 and 12-1 mercy-rule.  Game time temperatures were in the mid-60s and sunny (and no snow).

In the first game, we had 15 combined hits.  Lyndsay went 5 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.  Freshman sensation Abby Ramirez went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored. Romo went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored.  Another Freshman, Kelly Christner, went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Haylie was the starting pitcher and went the distance.  She finished with 1 run (ER) off 2 hits along with 10 Ks and 2 BB.  Overall a very strong performance for Haylie who is coming off last year's injury.  This will certainly boost her confidence.

In the second game against Bethune-Cookman, everything was working well for our ladies.  We had 15 hits coming from 8 different players.  Romo went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Caitlin went 3 for 4 with 4RBIs and 2 runs scored.  Silo and Lyndsay had 2 hits apiece.

Megan Besta was rewarded with her first ever Michigan Start and the win.  She went 3 innings and gave up 1 run (ER) off 1 hit.  She allowed 5 BB and garnered 7 Ks.  Overall a good performance for Megan considering this is her first Varsity Start.

Sara came on for the last 2 innings.  She allowed 0 runs and 1 hit with 0 BBs and 5 Ks.  This is another stellar performance by Sara.

Overall a total team effort today.  A 3-1 start is a good start to the long season.  We came within 1 out of beating Florida and going 4-0 to start the season.  It is good to see Haylie back in the circle and the Freshmen contributing so early in their careers.

It will be interesting to see how far we fall after the UF loss.  I suspect we will only lose a few spots but we will remain in the Top 10, not that it matters though.  We play next weekend Lafayette La next weekend.

However, SB is not a men's revenue sport so the television demand is just not there.  Also the overall popularity of SB is not very high.  I will say that Michigan SB has a very large following: partly because "This is Michigan" and partly because of the success of the team and Coach Hutch.

I was going to ask, any idea if any games in the near future are going to be on BTN, or live video on mgoblue.com? Or am I stuck with the thankfully quite informative Michigan softball twitter account.

Every home game and every B1G game will have live video. Whether it be on the BTN or on the subscription service of MGoBlueTV per the MGoBlueTV people I emailed.

Good bounce-back day, and great recaps, MGoSoftball!  I always appreciate reading the write-ups.

Obviously these were games we were expected to win, but we took care of business in pretty dominant fashion, which is of course what you like to see.  Hitting through the line-up and good pitching is going to be key.  I agree that it is great to see Wagner having a strong start to the season.  She's one I'm going to be keeping an eye on early - if she is showing signs of playing at the level she was as a freshman or improving from there, look out.  Also a big commendation to Abby Ramirez, who according to the MGoBlue.com write-up "finished her first weekend of collegiate softball with a .583 (7-for-12) batting average, six runs scored and four assists."  Great way to start a career!

Was this a round robin tournament? Or brackets with win& advance format? Wondering if it's like the basketball preseason or designed to give every team the chance to play a bunch of games.

Thanks for your time posing these updates!
