Meta: Olympics & MGoBoard (Everything Sochi open thread)
Hey all,
With the Olympics upon us we wanted to remind everyone of the "no spoilers rule" for delayed telecast events. During the London games there were a couple spoilers posted; some people went ballistic and others had their event...spoiled. With that in mind, here is your friendly reminder: If it's going to be on in primetime don't post a thread with the results in the title. Your MGoBrethren will ostracize you and it will be the last thread you will start for a while. Open threads are fair game to post spoilers, so stay out of those if you're looking to be surprised. If someone wants to put a no-spoilers disclaimer on their OP that will be respected.
One other note, please stay away from the really political aspects of these games. This isn't meant to deter anyone from chuckling in the direction of interesting toilet facilities or noting that corruption exists in large, international sporting bodies, but MGoBoard isn't the place for a nuanced discussion on Russian public policy, human rights record, ect..
Go (Red, White, and) Blue!

Here's a spolier - Sochi sucks at hosting Olympic games.

I've decided I'm going to use "sochied" in place of "screwed up" or "botched" henceforth.
February 7th, 2014 at 1:25 PM ^
Heard a talking head analyst on cable news saying it would be a "miracle" if there wasn't an incident.
February 6th, 2014 at 8:39 PM ^
I'm not a big Twitter user; but I just discovered #sochiproblems.
Gold.

Posted before Games have started!

I say spoil away because.......
February 6th, 2014 at 6:46 PM ^
is spoiled

I grew up with Bill in all the Channel 7 promos....I miss those...
February 6th, 2014 at 7:04 PM ^
Bonds is news. Best rug in the business, too.
February 6th, 2014 at 9:26 PM ^
I couldn't wait for the game, so I was huddled around WJR listening for updates and knew the result at the start of the game. If you were paying attention to the ear-to-ear grin Jim McKay had when introducing the game you had to figure out something was up.
February 6th, 2014 at 11:23 PM ^
as if it was live.
WIth Team USA down only 3-2 in the second intermission, I was excited that the US was still in the game, and jeez, there's actually a chance! Then Bill Bonds comes on for a local segue back to the game and announces "Team USA beats the Soviets 4-3!"
It stole some of the magic.
February 6th, 2014 at 6:56 PM ^
Think the American media is pouring it on a little thick with the Russia angle. Enough already. Just televise the Games and shut up already.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:01 PM ^
It's not their fault that the story so far is what it is.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:06 PM ^
Decide what the story is man. Don't you know you are in the matrix?
February 6th, 2014 at 7:01 PM ^
If anything, it's exposing how America's cultural and political awareness about Russia essentially hasn't changed since about 1952.
Protip: "In Soviet Russia..." jokes haven't been funny in nearly 25 years, if they were ever funny at all.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:35 PM ^
There are plenty good "in Soviet Russia" jokes left to tell.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:03 PM ^
'Merica, fuck yeah!!
February 6th, 2014 at 7:05 PM ^
NBC is a terrible media company and their coverage of the events will be inane.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:07 PM ^
Their NBA coverage was decent.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:09 PM ^
I still catch myself humming the NBA on NBC theme from time to time. I'm weird, I know.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:19 PM ^
Dude, did you know John Tesh wrote that theme?!
February 6th, 2014 at 7:22 PM ^
Hahaha no idea
February 6th, 2014 at 7:08 PM ^
Have events always started before the Opening Ceremonies? I'll admit I'm not exactly a diehard Olympics viewer, but don't recall this in the past.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:10 PM ^
Yep, seems like that's been the case for the last few Summer and Winter games. It's a lot of preliminary rounds and such for sports like swimming and other sports with lots of events and individual heats.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:17 PM ^
Thanks, I guess that would make sense considering the number of athletes you never see on actual coverage.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:34 PM ^
For the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, the equestrian events were actually held several months before the rest of the Olympics because of some issue with Australian quarantine laws.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:47 PM ^
If you really want to be entertained, look up the 1904 games in St. Louis. It was a five-month literal free-for-all.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:52 PM ^
EDIT: Double
February 6th, 2014 at 10:17 PM ^
And I forgot to mention, said equestrian events were not even held in Australia. They did them in Sweden.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:11 PM ^
can't wait to watch some snowboarding!
February 6th, 2014 at 7:12 PM ^
Yo yo yo spoiler alert!! In the opening ceremonies Luxembourg follows Lithuania in the parade of nations.
Wait... what?
Damnit... Bolivia'd!*
*Bolivia will not be at the 2014 Winter Games

What about the lame move of Shawn White dropping out of slope style?
I lived at a resort for 3 years and still have a lot of friends there and it is all over my Facebook. It would be sick to win the first ever slope style
February 6th, 2014 at 7:42 PM ^
I have a feeling he would have competed in slope style if it was held after the half pipe. He was probably worried about an injury happening in an event he was not likely to win and that costing him a gold in the pipe. Can't say I blame him, especially since he's not a young pup anymore and because I would break my neck trying to do any of it.
February 6th, 2014 at 7:42 PM ^
To remember a lot of people bitching about the course and he doesn't want to jeopardize his other events for this one.
February 6th, 2014 at 8:58 PM ^
Shaun is kind of a bitch if you ask me. He could have bowed out a day or two earlier and given another young American rider a chance (that actually wanted to compete). As a member of the snowboard community; I can tell you this is indicitive of the reasons that Shaun is not well-liked by most snowboarders. Super super selfish move. I hope Danny Davis wins the pipe.
If you want to know how the core snowboard community REALLY feels about the Olympics; here's Terje Haakonsen articulating the way lots of us feel...

February 6th, 2014 at 9:08 PM ^
Informative.
February 6th, 2014 at 9:20 PM ^
Yeah, the big thing for me is another rider got screwed. Do you live in the mountains? I lived in Mammoth and supposedly it was a mammoth kid that probably got shafted. From what I heard Shaun was usually not nice to lifties as well.
Danny is killing it, switch method or gtfo. I want to see him or Bretz take it.
February 6th, 2014 at 9:25 PM ^
You and Shaun White are part of the "snowboard community" in the same way Michael Jordan and I are part of the "basketball community" when I play pick-up.
February 6th, 2014 at 11:06 PM ^
Basketball and snowboarding are completely different. You can't even relate the two. You can live at a big mountain and work in a number of different areas where you would get to know some of the pros. Snowboarding is still a fairly tight knit community if you are in it.
February 6th, 2014 at 10:06 PM ^
Oh I'm sorry; do you and I know each other? As the other poster said; the snowboard community is super tight-knit and (without name-dropping) I've ridden with some of the riders that are in Sochi.
February 6th, 2014 at 10:33 PM ^
If you can't take some shit for equating yourself with olympic riders, I don't know what to tell you. Unless you're at that level, talking about how "we" don't like him just sounds douchy.
You've ridden with them, but you don't want to namedrop, just in case it sounds like you're bragging.
February 7th, 2014 at 1:03 AM ^
Geez buddy; the last thing I'm doing is "equating" myself with Olympic snowboarding. Just trying to provide some perspective from inside the snowboard industry.
Quit hating. I'd be more than happy to hear your expert opinion on pizza when that topic comes up.
February 6th, 2014 at 9:25 PM ^
He backed out when he got on the slope, did a training run and hurt his wrist. Numerous competitors have complained about the course but most of them don't have another event where they are gold medal favorites to jeopordize. He might be a bitch, I don't know him, but if moves like this are the reason than it seems like the snowboard community is just looking for a reason to dislike him because he is the face of the sport.
