It was believable. At first the kid was on the radar of a few schools, but his grades were bad and he never tried to improve them so they stopped recruiting him.
He said that his grandfather would pay for him to fly out of state for camps, which he wasn't actually attending. He would hang around for a few hours, buy some gear and head home.

As someone who has several Mormon friends, I can say that this whole thread is very insensitive. If he's joking around with you that's one thing, but there's a reason why the "No Religion" clause is commonly envoked on this blog. No one will win with this, so lets just drop it.

I used to think having more than one wife would be a great thing, then I got married.
Seriously, I think I have a pretty good sense of humour and I don't even find it hard to laugh at myself either. The problem with his joke was that it isn't true, we don't have multiple wives.
I'm sure there are many reasons people of other religions can find to make fun of us that are factual and if that's the case I'll try not to take too much offense. I mean, I know my mother-in-law finds it ridiculous that we give 10% of our gross income to the church, who in turn help in almost every humanitarian effort. She also finds it crazy that a guy who has a little spare time as I do, I spend it helping other people rather than doing things she thinks I should be doing. Oh, and yeah, she's even asked questions about our underwear because she came over when they were out on the clothes line and can't imagine why we'd wear such things.
I guess my problem is this: I don't mind people being ignorant in relation to my religion and having the curiosity necessary to ask honest questions to receive an honest answer. What irritates me is when people throw around misinformation and have no interest in knowing what is actually true, because that messes up their preconceived notions and isn't nearly as funny. You shouldn't ignore the truth just because it ruins your joke.

Most of what you said can be attributed so a few other religions, i.e. tithing and volunteer work, etc.
Additionally, the throwing around of misinformation is another common issue that people have simply because they don't know any different.
More evidence why keeping religion out of this blog is a very good policy.

While the mormon church split and the majority aren't polygamists anymore, the mormon church founders did in fact believe in the right to have multiple wives and many mormons today still practice polygamy. Just because a good part of the church modernized doesn't mean that wasn't one of the original practices of the church.

That post didn't insinuate that mormons once practiced polygamy, it insinuated that they still do, which is completely false. Also, once a religion "splits" as you say, they are no longer the same religion. It would be like me attributing all the atrocities that England perpetrated against other countries to the U.S.A. because in the beginning, the U.S.A. was an English Colony. I mean I know you aren't anymore, but you were English once.
I'm not going to get into this debate much further except to say that what you say is true, initially the church practiced polygamy. At the time the practice was legal and as soon as that changed the church abolished the practice. Some people didn't like the change and left the church to create another one. They are no longer what the world calls "mormons".
I do have to say I love this blog and enjoy many of the posters, but one issue I have always had with it is this: It seems this board is pretty progressive and tolerant in so many ways. I have seen people make off color remarks about LGBT, different ethnic backgrounds even women and other posters and the mods come down on those posts like a ton of bricks. For some reason though, my religion is fair game. I mean, this isn't even close to the first time we have had people on here making fun of my religion. I have to say that I find it pretty disappointing.
