OT: UM @ IU, Superbowl menus

Submitted by gopoohgo on

Nothing special for the Michigan game; smoothie (spinach, kale and crap) before working out.

Superbowl: Pork butt that is on the 3rd hour of smoking (apple cider/butter spritzing), coleslaw, and oysters on the half shell (availability of fresh seafood is one of the good things about living on the east coast).  Stone Enjoy By 2/14/14 as beverage of choice.

As an added bonus, extra special coverage on the deathstorm (4") that will be hitting MD/DC/NoVa after the game tonight.

Bit of a party with 12 of my friends... We have several lbs of wings, two jugs of nacho cheese and two giant bags of chips, so many cookies and brownies, over 100 kielbasa and brautwursts a friend brought in from Pittsburgh, and 12 gallons of Arnold Palmer. Going to be a heck of a night

Holy shit, man. If you guys can polish off all of that meat, I will be forever impressed. That's like, pounds of meat per person... and you gotta have the jugs of nacho cheese. Pure insanity. I commend your distain for your cardiovascular system. Not even mad, that's amazing.

Morels and scrambled eggs with ribeye for breakfast. Hot wings with homemade hot sauce for a Michigan win vs. IU. Alaskan King Crab with clarified butter, steamed broccoli and cheese sauce to round out SB Sunday. Oh yeah, cocktails. Copious cocktails.

Dips. So many dips. All homemade. Guacamole, buffalo chicken dip, Ruben dip, many more. Homemade barbecue meatballs. Some things that other people bring.

Lots of finger foods, dips and assorted game fare then I'm grilling pizzas for the game.  Trust me, if you ever grill a pizza you'll never want one any other way and it's so freaking easy to do.

I do it without a stone, but mines also not exactly traditional. I use a no-knead Lebanese flatbread recipe from the NYTimes. Cook for about a minute on one side, flip it and spread toppings on fast the close the grill and cook a couple minutes to finish. Tomato sauce and cheese works, buy I've also done fig, goat cheese, and balsamic onions and other similar pizzas with great success.

I'm sure you could use a premade dough if you rolled it out and brushed it with oil before grilling. The oil is key to prevent sticking. I roll it very thin so it cooks fast and use a fairly high heat. If you roll it thicker use a lower heat to prevent burning the crust. Important to grease both sides because you want to flip it before putting toppings on.

I do it slightly different.  I cheat and use pre-made crusts and put one side on direct heat for about 45 seconds to simply brown and crust the side.  Then I bring it in - flip it - and my wife loads up the toppings on the browned side.  Then I cook it indirect for about 10 minutes or until the cheese melts bring in and serve.  When the fire is hot (I use chrarcoal) I can only do one at a time but once it cools a bit I can do two and cook direct.

Either way you do it (and your method sounds fantastic by the way) it's awesome.

Small knit here.  Does anybody else's wife or significant other cook like this when hosting a party? She'll count the number of people attending (in our case today 11 adults and about 7 kids) and will decide we need food for 47 people.  And I can't stop it - she just keeps makings stuff.  I guess this really isnt a "problem" per say but man do we ever end up with a lot of extra food when these things are over.

For the Michigan game, I will probably have some of the leftover lasagna Bolognese from last night and a nice glass of wine. I actually thought about stopping to get subs, but I really made a ton of lasagna and best get started on leftovers, eh?

For the Super Bowl, strip steaks with roasted red potatoes and a spinach salad. It's just me and the wife, and I am sure we will polish off the salsa and chips while we wait for the steaks to grill as well.

Nothing special for the Michigan game. Diet Snapple and pretzels. Nachos and BWW's for the Super Bowl.

I'm on probation so I can't drink. FML.

Because of young kids, my wife and I stay home to watch the game (with out 6year old for the first half). The menu:

Tortilla chips with home made salsa.

Home made mini beef empenedas (basically, ground beef cooked with home made tomato sauce and tomato paste and spices. Then wrap large table spook sized portions of the meet in home-made dough / pie crust and bake). I can eat about 40 over the the course of the game.

Dessert - home made brownies and chocolate chunk cookies.

Yeah, my wife is awesome (and she will bitch about things like special teams play and poor blocking schemes during the game).

Brown Bear

Going to a friends house for a Super Bowl party, not worried about the food menu but the beer menu we have acquired is quite nice. We have two cases of 22 oz bottles of Small Town Brewery's Not Your Fathers Root Beer(if you haven't had it you need to hunt it down, 10% alc. beer that tastes exactly like root beer, it's unbelievable), 5 6-packs of assorted Three Floyd's brews, some 4-packs Surly CynicAle and Surly Furious and a couple cases of coors and miller for the non-beer connoisseurs. Somebody tell me who won the game tomorrow.

Five years ago we were in Maui for the Super Bowl so my Costco find of a Kona Brewing Co. sampler inspired a Hawaiian theme. Going with teriyaki sliders with mango curry coconut slaw and grilled pineapple on kings Hawaiian rolls.

How that kale and crap smoothie turns out. The bitter kale may be balanced out by the crap, but I suppose that depends on what you had for dinner last night. Keep me posted.

I put plenty of vanilla yogurt (Source 35 calories) in with the kale and it balances it out well.

I made a vat of seafood stew last night with homemade lobster broth from 12 lobster carcases frozen after Christmas Dinner.  It's loaded with scallops & shrimp, snapper, halibut, cod and salmon along with potatoes and leeks and a paprika seasoning mix.    We'll be chowing on that starting at kickoff along with sourdough bread & bevvies - white wine spritzers for the Michigan & Wings games, then switching to vodka for the SB.

GO BLUE!

I've got some chili and black beam chorizo soup. Then bbq ribs, wings, pizza, and broasted chicken. We don't have anything to special to drink, just Redds apple ale and some Budweiser.

Mom and Pop type place for an unhealthy breakfast and half a gallon of coffee.  It was glorious.

Followed up by a good 7 mile run to prepare for the abuse that was to follow that night.

Super Bowl party menu:  I provided meatballs warmed in the crockpot with a bottle of BW's Asian Zing sauce poured on top.  Very good if you haven't done that before.  The host of the party made a crockpot full of Chicago style Italian Beef sammiches, complete with hot peppers.  So...damn....good.

Surprisingly, I didn't drink a lot 3-4 beers maybe.  I had a hard time wanting to get up during commercial breaks because...obviously.  Even though the commercials were sub-par this year, imo, I still wanted to see them.
