Malik McDowell - Sam Webb update on WTKA

Submitted by BlueCube on

I missed part of the update, but from what I heard,  Sam said Michigan is DEFINITELY not out of it. He said he couldn't go into details, but he said MSU definitely has issues to overcome and there are factors heavily in favor of Michigan. He said OSU is also making a late run since Larry Johnson was hired. He felt they had no chance before. No one has any idea who the real favorite is but he emphasized strongly that Michigan is still in contention.

Edited: Upon replaying the podcast Sam said it was clear then changed it to pretty clear that his parents said it wouldn't go past signing day but then said it wasn't likely.

There are some very important decisions that my children had to make when they were in high school.  Though I might have wanted each of them to attend a school that I liked, I realized that the best choice for them would be the one that THEY liked and that THEY felt most comfortable with.

It worked out well for them.  I couldn’t be happier that one of them chose Michigan for undergraduate and graduate education.

But Michigan might not be the right fit for every high school student, regardless of whether they’re the high school's star athlete or the class valedictorian or the most creative musical talent or that genius computer programmer and IT person who might instantly remedy all of MGoBlog's website glitches.

Unfortunately, it seems like Jared Wangler’s commitment last August may have shut the door on Michigan’s 2014 recruiting class.  But that doesn’t mean that there can’t be a last-minute surprise for the members of Michigan’s Team 135.  Or that one of the preferred walk-ons joining Team 135 might turn out to be a diamond in the rough who would make Michigan Wolverines fans forget about Malik McDowell   Or that Brady Pallante won't be able to replicate what another state wrestling champion (Mike Martin) was able to do for a recent Michigan defensive line.

If Malik McDowell selects the school that HE likes best, even if it’s one of Michigan’s rivals, it would be hard for me to fault him.  It will be one of the first big steps on his journey through adulthood. Let him enjoy the experience and learn from it, even if he doesn't decide to GO BLUE.

I agree with most of your sentiment. I too believe that a 18 year old kid should have a major say with regards to where he goes to school for the next 4 to 5 years. That being said, I do believe that it's the parents responsibility to make sure that their child is making a good decision. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if Malik chooses Michigan State, Ohio State or Florida State, based on a combination of academics Atlantics, and campus life, then his parents and everyone else should respect that. However, I believe that if my child was to make a decision like this, purely based on what school he would have the most fun at, I would be stepping in and putting in my two cents. I think that is the responsibility of a parent to look at all avenues when making a major decision.

He isn't coming. Most experts seem to think he's not. Most people with so called sources suggest we are outside looking in. Laugh if you want about these sources, but more times than not, they are right. I think UM is in 4th place right now.
