Rutgers is looking for a new OC maybe he gets brought up for that job.

Who you talkin bout steveo?
January 14th, 2014 at 11:53 PM ^
He's talking about Big Al
January 14th, 2014 at 11:59 PM ^
That's who I figured. Big Al's shadow looms large on this board.
January 15th, 2014 at 12:10 AM ^
large ANYWHERE

Come on...no Uncle Phil-esque jokes.

Big Al can cause a solar eclipse.

Denbrock is named the OC, but Brian Kelly will call the plays next year.
January 15th, 2014 at 12:02 AM ^
I always wondered: what is the point of an OC if you don't let him call the plays?
January 15th, 2014 at 1:12 AM ^
He plays soothing electronic music over the headset to keep Kelly from exploding.
January 15th, 2014 at 11:26 AM ^
For some reason, this is how I see their relationship.
January 15th, 2014 at 1:20 PM ^
Kelly had better start hitting the squat rack, STAT.
January 15th, 2014 at 1:13 AM ^
You still need someone to oversee the offense during practice when the head coach has to oversee everything.
And he might be in charge of play design and game planning even if he isn't calling the plays on gameday.
I'd never take the job, but hey.
January 15th, 2014 at 8:32 AM ^
of pointing the guantlet sled the right way. Kelly does not want to that anymore
January 15th, 2014 at 10:43 AM ^
Rich Rod did/does the same thing with Calvin Magee. It's a "Imma help my buddy get a head coaching job by giving him a fancy title" thing. Offensive coordinator in name only.
See "associate/assistant head coach."

"Why Denbrock? Is he funny or something?"
January 15th, 2014 at 12:06 AM ^
With Notre Dame !
January 15th, 2014 at 12:26 AM ^
Well it looks like we got the biggest hire so far in the midwest. ND and Ohio's hires aren't as impressive as Nussmeier.

Nussmania Train will not be stopped!

The Nuss Bus.
January 15th, 2014 at 10:30 AM ^
I hear that song "Hop on the Nuss Bus" to the song "Fifty ways to Leave a Lover". Real lyric "Hop on the bus, Gus". It has been stuck in my head for days.
January 15th, 2014 at 3:20 AM ^
And yet there are a bunch of big name recruits tweeting about how excited they are about the hire of Larry Johnson at Ohio and not the hire of Doug here at Michigan. Until we make some sort of change on the field it may not be the biggest hire especially in the way of recruiting and yet still a huge get for the college as a whole
January 15th, 2014 at 11:04 AM ^
There are plenty of recruits tweeting how excited they are about Nuss too. As if that's the definitive measure, anyway.

notre dame got a pretty big name DC hire

According to UND website -

BK said he was going to officially call the plays for the 2014 season. So yeah, I am wondering what this guy will actually do? I am not sure Gorgeous Al would be the best hire as a QB coach. Although, if his only responsibility is to work with the QBs maybe he will do a good job.
January 15th, 2014 at 1:51 AM ^
Al Borges has never been a QBs coach and it isn't starting in 2014. If he takes a job, like the Rutgers one mentioned, it'll be for one thing; O-C. That's what he do.
As for the ND hire, Kelly promotes from within so he can call the plays without much head-butting. Can only help his NFL chances if he does it successfully. Only a matter of time.
January 15th, 2014 at 6:44 AM ^
so what was Borges when he was here?, He was the OC and QB coach. Unless u mean he's never been a QB coach without also being the OC.
January 15th, 2014 at 8:35 AM ^
OP: "No QB coach yet but it will be an outsider per BK....BOOOOOOORGES"
You really needed me to clarify that I meant Borges has only been an OC and never strictly a QB coach with an OC above him?
[Seth Meyers voice]
Really?
January 15th, 2014 at 2:17 AM ^
I thought Kelly calls his own plays?
January 15th, 2014 at 2:17 AM ^
So the new guy is nothing more then a puppet so to speak.
January 15th, 2014 at 2:29 AM ^
If he was the outside receivers coach, does that mean they have an inside receivers coach?
January 15th, 2014 at 8:09 AM ^
No they have a different coach in dome stadiums.
January 15th, 2014 at 10:07 AM ^
Yes, they do.
Denbrock coaches outside receivers. Tony Alford coaches the running backs and slot receivers.
January 15th, 2014 at 6:43 AM ^
So, by sticking with Denbrock and also by hiring VanGorder, it looks as if Kelly might very well be getting the old Grand Valley State band back together, as I believe both of these guys worked with him there at various points. Obviously, Denbrock was already on staff at ND, but still, it looks like Kelly tends to stand by the familiar when it comes to hires.
Also, as ken725 notes above "outside receivers coach" is not something you see every day, but reading the entire profile, you see several tight ends among his "dynamic disciples", whatever this means. I assume he works a lot with "other guys that will catch passes on occasion".
January 15th, 2014 at 7:58 AM ^
BK seems to be building a coaching staff worthy of a march to Florence, AL and ND's first D2 national championship.
January 15th, 2014 at 8:03 AM ^
And the media will still hype it more than any other game.
January 15th, 2014 at 6:47 AM ^
Never heard of an "outside receivers coach." Why can't they just have a receivers coach?
January 15th, 2014 at 10:08 AM ^
Because in a spread offense, the slot receiver is really more of a hybrid running back. So they put the slot receivers with the running backs for practice.
January 15th, 2014 at 7:40 AM ^
To hell with Notre Dame. That is all
January 15th, 2014 at 9:50 PM ^
Ditto
January 15th, 2014 at 7:56 AM ^
We have an inside linebacker(s) coach.
January 15th, 2014 at 8:39 AM ^
Doesn't this kind of rule out Borges?
If he joined ND and beat us with a spread attack and Golson, I would about crap myself.
