OT: My layoff now effective today

Submitted by Crime Reporter on

Well, I guess my upbeat mood and positive attitude threw the bosses a curve ball, because they brought me into the office today and said I could no longer work until the end of the month, as previously promised.

Let the sleeping in commence.

Congrats! Get yourself an xbox 360 and relax until things turn around.

Edit: Unless you have kids, in which case you have my sympathies and well-wishes.

That sucks even worse man. Good luck in whatever else you do. I'm going through the same type of deal with the Air Force, long story so I won't write forever. Everything happens for a reason.

Just out of curiosity... do you know what you're looking to do? I know you mentioned you worked for a newspaper and that you were done with "print media", but what location are you in and what are your next steps, if any?

kind of sucks. I've heard similar horror stories, FWIW. Good luck in whatever you find next.

I feel kind of awkward writing this, seems like you enjoyed your job but could not keep it, I am quite unhappy with mine yet in the Michigan economy I am too afraid to leave. I guess I should shut up and be happy I have a job.

Throughout my tenure at this place, when the economy started to sink and we had mass layoffs, the bosses and even editors were like, "I'm just happy to have a job." I always thought to myself that was an excuse and they were lucky to have people like me.

I liked my job a lot, but it got to the point where the lack of leadership made it so stressful. Keep your chin up. Things will get better

Thanks for the reply, I have my annual review on Monday, it could get interesting....
[edit] I try to do what I can to live up to the "Leaders and best" theme, at least at work, anyway, may sound silly but it provides a bit of inspiration to me. It's hard to keep it up when things at work turn sour and stay that way for a long time.

Dude, this is your third post on the subject re: getting laid off.

Not to be a dick or anything, but a lot of people right now don't have work but don't bring it to this board. And if you could create a SAT question like "what profession is the next logical choice: internet entrepreneur, mortgage backed securities trader, and ______", the answer would be: C) Newspaper employee. Not a good sector to be in right now unless you are working for the Times or the WSJ.

I appreciate the comments and feedback. And you're not being a dick. I came to this board the other night to vent and I was overwhelmed by the support. My second post was to thank everyone. This was just an update. I'll keep it to football in the future. And I didn't neg you.

Didn't want to be harsh, just trying to play devil's advocate. Best of luck in your new venture.

As someone who actually quit his job, I can tell you being unemployed is a great way to get your life back and order and ready to take the next step. Obviously hoping that any Wolverine fan finds new work in something they love to do in a fairly short matter of time. Again, best of luck.

Yeah we are definitely riding through some tough times. It's to the point where I feel blessed that I am still in college and do not have to worry about dealing with the real world in all its scariness. I hope all goes well in your search and never give up. Persistence is a quality that is rare nowadays.

I'm past sympathy. I apologize for interrupting your normal dose of football-related threads and double posts. I get it. I just figured the folks who took the time to respond would want an update, since they were nice enough to reply in the first place. I'm grateful for the support I received here, and to be frank, it helped me get through the week, when I had to sit right next to the very person who was behind my termination.

i feal for you. got layed off may 30th. rather than immidiatly job hunting or bumming it i decided to learn c# and SQL. after 2 months i started hunting and found something just a month later. now, im doing a job i like more and like where my career is headed (i love using c#), plus im rejuvinated from the time off.

so, id recommend the same. make the most of this. dont just sleep in and get a xbox. if nothing else, having something positive to say about your time off will help in job interviews.

Sometimes you just gotta say, "...fuck." I'm real sorry, dog.

BTW, the economy blows now obviously, but you have something ridiculously valuable: writing skills and habits of deadline. It is disgusting how many people do not have the ability to write a cogent set of paragraphs that express and flesh out an idea. Best of luck finding a new gig; society needs people who can write.
