A coach at Louisville makes more than the same position here. Thats down right embarrassing. Even if they overpaid, the market is trending up. If we dont step it up we look cheap. Bama, lsu, USC sure they pay well. Now we are outspent by fucking Louisville? Wow.

I disagree.  Just because one school is stupid and overpays for an average SEC DC, doesn't mean the rest of the CFB world needs to follow suit.

And Grantham is smart to take it.  He was probably close to getting fired there anyways.  Gets to leave on his own terms, and gets a big raise out of it to.

Would it make you feel better if we paid Mattison 2 million a year? He's good, better than Grantham. What else matters? It's not like we got outbid.

And hell, we made Nuss a top 5 paid OC in America.

We expect to win. Everything. We dont. Other schools pay more and do better, some do worse. My point is we should be at the top. Especially with the latest valuations that came out. We have the money. Whatever we are paying, as of late, has been wasted. We are years removed from any title, won't win it all in a few. I feel, (sorry if my feelings bother you) that if LSU can pay Cam 1.2 whatever and they get results, why don't we do the same?

Let's talk about logical processes.

We're willing to pay coaches tons of money - we literally just did it two days ago. Do you want to fire Mattison and hire someone using tons of money? Or do you just want to give Mattison a huge raise because we have money?

I mean, we brought Mattison from his post as the DC of the Ravens. It was a pretty damn good hire - then or now, I'm not sure who you'd prefer. Or what your point is right now.

You confuse me, is the takeaway here.

I havent saw anything about Nuss pay being official. The point, other schools pay more than we do. Most of which do better. For years we refused to pay top dollar to top talent. As for mattison, love him, and if you gave him a raise i wouldn't argue. My point is the market. Until we win a title of any kind with this staff, (nuss excluded) we are not paying for top talent. Believe it or not, results matter. We can scream we are Michigan until the cows come home, until there is a big ten title and a national title it means nothing.

Who should be hired to replace Mattison? Your comments indicate Micahigan should be paying someone twice as much and that Mattison is not very good. I don't know if you realize that just because you want to see Michigan pay someone $2m/yr does not mean there is anyone better than what they have who would have gone to ann arbor.
Also consider, Mattison said he would not have left for anywhere other than michigan or anyone other than Hoke. So he may have talked a discount to coach at Michigan.

This argument is really stupid. Iowa has been outspending the entire Big 10 for their coach for many years (until Dantonio, Meyer, Hoke and now Franklin cracked the big time). Brb 4 million + / year for Ferentz, probably the worst contract in all of CFB.

Mattison is the highest paid assistant in the B1G making 851.4k.  Al Borges was making over 700k.

Michigan State has two of the lowest paid assistants in the co-offensive coordinators.

So just because we don't pay our assistants over 1 mil per year means we suck?  I don't get it.

I also thought I had heard that Garrick McGee, formerly of UAB, will be the offensive coordinator, so if that is the case, that rounds out the coordinator hires. Question for someone who might know for certain - wasn't Grantham the defensive line coach for the Spartans when Saban was at Michigan State, at least for a few years?

Continuing the OT trend of the topic, the online speculation says Richt might make a run at Kirby Smart (Bama's DC), apparently he has some ties to Georgia.

Kirby was an all-SEC DB at Geogia, and then started his coaching career there as a GA.  He also made a brief pit stop there in 2005 as their RBs coach, before leaving for Miami in 2006.  So yeah, there's a lot of ties with Kirby Smart and Georgia.  And considering how Alabama's defense underperformed this season, Kirby might be wise to take a new job with Georgia if the price (just a guess...$1.4M??) is right.

Would be a huge coup for Georgia too.  Upgrade their own DC and hurt a rival at the same time.

Smart has been mentioned repeatedly as Richt's successor, given the obvious ties. If they signed him up with an implied agreement that he's the next coach, I don't see why he wouldn't do it.

Unless: he's also rumoured to be Saban's choice as eventual successor, if that goddamn robot zombie ever actually ages.

Smart played at Georgia, and the current UGA OC was Smart's roommate in college.

I believe he has said the UGA HC job would be his dream job, and it's believed Richt won't coach as long as people tihnk.

I think that having an overly aggressive salary as a coordinator lines oneself up for extra criticism when the chips are down for whatever reason.  It might be skillful negotiations or having a good agent (lawyer?) but everyone knows when the coordinators are highly paid.

Louisville seems to be doing some odd stuff anyway.  Now they have an identity 8-)

I just graduated from Georgia so I experienced every year of his tenure. He really underperformed last year. The worse part is how many of his hyper talented guys seemed to regress. Rambo never figured out how to play deep safety and Jarvous would fly straight upfield on every snap. This year the defense was going to be bad no matter what. The secondary did improve but almost all of their linebacks looked like Obi Ezeh ie stand still and take a block. I think Georgia is happy to have him gone
