Report: Nuss to be #3 paid assistant, north of $1.1M a year
Gil Brandt just tweeted that Nussmeier will be the #3 paid coordinator in CFB. Chad Morris is #1 at $1.3M, Kirby Smart is #2 at $1.28M, the old #3 was Cam Cameron who's deal averages $1.1M a year. So that puts Nuss at what...$1.2M??
Saw reports Doug Nussmeier will be among five highest-paid college coordinators at #Michigan. That's correct. He'll be No. 3.

I guess this is the good side of high ticket prices and PSLs. It forces Dave Brandon to produce.
Brandon's athletic department depends on very large revenue streams. Streams that aren't sustainable with middling B1G results. The expectation that things will get better can only last so long without real results, and if supporters started withholding gifts / downgrading their suites/seats to save money, etc., it would all fall apart.

Wow. So this is what constantly rising prices get us...I think this is more worth it than the Vegas Billboard on Stadium.

I would remind you that this is still an academic institution. And that the football team is an amatuer team that represents the academic institution (& who's members participate in the academics). & I would ask if it is appropriate if AN ASSISTANT is worth significantly more $ that the President of the institution...
I'd ask this, but the ship has sailed. There is a preverse amount of money in this now. I'm just glad that the money that is being made by the AD is going back into the team to improve the product.
I like the hire & obviously hope he succeeds, but it's sometimes worthwile to take a step back & evaluate

When you factor in the free housing and the car she gets, MSC is effectively getting seven figures. At that point, what difference does it make if that's more or less than what a coach gets? She's doing very well for herself regardless. She's the 6th-highest-paid university president in the country.
And the reality is that a football coach is more visible, and much more scrutinized, than the university president on most campuses. Rightly or wrongly, that's how it is. If the debate is not that the head coach deserves to be paid but that assistants shouldn't be, Hoke is a delegator by nature, with an OC who is highly autonomous - moreso than at most schools. A Hoke OC is practically a co-HC. So it's logical that he would be compensated near the top nationally.

...that this is the cost of doing business--the business of winning. I'm not saying it's right, but if you want to have a successful football program, this is what it takes.
I don't have time to go back through your posting history, but since you've been a member of a Michigan football+ blog for over a year, then I'm betting you really care about the level of winning, which means you just made a very hypocritical statement.
You can't demand excellence without being willing to pay the costs to acquire it. Well, I guess you could, but that would be an irrational demand.

Yeah this is a worthwile point. Hopefully this amount of salary will keep him from jumping to any HC jobs unless they are high level (i.e. it wouldn't be worth going to the MAC as he'd likely not make large jump in salary)
*I think Washington is a higher level job, but they obviously chose a different coach and I think it would take this type of offer for him to leave with a ~$1.2 salary

yeah exactly man. We likely won't lose him to a MAC or similar level school since he was already in contention for UW. If the offense makes a major leap next year you gotta believe Nuss would be on the shortlist for many coach-searching schools in early 2015 but he'd hold out for the HC gig in a top conference.
I'm thinking if a hot seat coach such as Bielema, Muschamp, Pelini, Sonny Dykes or maybe even Charlie Weiss get canned after next season those schools may come a'callin.

If that is roughly accurate, it is interesting point out that he made a shade under $700,000 at Alabama...something like $680,000 as I recall. That would represent a raise slightly north of 40% in that instance. Wow. Even if it was just top five, he would still have to get north of $850,000 per the Daily this morning. Still impressive money.

Actually Cam Cameron's salary is going up this year, so if it's based on this year that means Nuss must be making more than the assumed amount by about 100,000 extra.

The salary's I found were the reported numbers for 2013. Kirby's deal was new last season so that won't change too much, and they said Cam's deal was backloaded so the $1.3M is probably right. So yeah, Nuss could be right around that Kirby Smart/Cam Cameron $1.3M mark.

Credit goes to everyone involved for making this quick and smooth. Old guy out with a firm handshake and a sincere thank you, new guy in before the rumor mill can get going and recruits start getting cold feet. If a large check was needed to make that happen, I'm glad it was provided. This hire has a lot going for it even besides the potential for a better product on the field offensively. Young energetic guy, good recruiter, experience as a QB coach, and as much as I hate to admit it, the brand recognition his former job brings.

coming out of their noodle holes. Dave Brandon is not afraid of spending as we all know. At the athletic department Christmas party, I was wondering how much all of the coaches made in total. Anybody know? Now, for the cool story bro part. At the party, which was in Crisler, I saw Borges in person for the last time. He was at the Dinky Donut stand, punding them down. Seems fitting. BUT I am still waiting for my check from UM for working childcare at the party.... come on man!
