Semi OT: (Speculation Thread) How NFL Coaching Carousel Could Affect College (and Michigan)

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

With the success of Chip Kelly, a number of college coaches are rumored for NFL jobs. And even if just 1-2 jump for the NFL, it could still send a domino effect throughout the college ranks and causes 5-6 guys to move around.

At Michigan we've been rumored to have anywhere from 0-3 spots left, doesn't seem like anyone knows or can get get any confirmation. HOWEVA, plenty of prospects may become an option with the moves.

Bill O'Brien is rumored to the Texas which would put PSU's class into question

...if O'Brien goes to the NFL, Al Golden is the name mentioned in the PSU circles. This would put Miami's class into question.

Charlie Strong would be an obvious perfect fit in Miami. He's also a finalist for the Texas job.

So the Louisville class gets tossed in there.

...not sure who Louisville would hire.

Other potential changes...

Vanderbilt - James Franklin to Texas
Florida St - Jimbo Fisher to Texas (Fisher just signed a huge extension)
Baylor - Art Briles to Texas (I know Briles signed an extension, but Texas would pay the buyout)
Notre Dame - Brian Kelly to Detroit Lions
Texas A&M - Kevin Sumlin to Washington Redskins ( know Sumlin signed an extension, but the Redskins would pay the buyout)

(then of course the carousel would continue with the 2nd level of guys who would replace these guys)

Anyway...here's a thread to keep track of the rumors for today.

Yeah, but I still think he's staying at FSU.  He has that program at near-Alabama levels in terms of simply reloading (without the benefit of oversigning) and has Winston for at least one more year.  Now is a bad time to take another job.  Three or four years from now if the Texas hire doesn't turn things around, he might be willing to take a look.

Didn't Art Briles sign an extension at Baylor which would take him well into the 2020s? I believe it was for $3.5 million per year or something along those lines. I also think he signed it in early November, which to me means that the likelihood of staying at Baylor for the foreseeable future is rather high. Not sure what the buyout number was on Briles' contract, but the full value of the contract would be pretty high, I would assume.

I have heard rumors that big time athletic boosters at Michigan are wanting Hoke fired.  Some have gauged the interest in John Harbaugh and he may be interested in the job if Hoke was fired.

Hmmmmm, so DB would have to fire Hoke just to make Harbaugh listen to the possibility of coming to Ann Arbor? Yeah, that rumor sounds legit. GTFO with this stuff. Harbaugh wouldn't do his alma mater like that and DB wouldn't be stupid enough to leave the team coachless on the off chance Jim Harbaugh gets nostalgic. Try again Ace.

My point wasn't just that he signed a contract—although you can argue that signing an extension of that length indicates he's pretty happy in Baltimore—but that he's getting paid more money than is going to be available at Michigan.
