I'd rather see Shannahan in Detroit personally.

Kelly is considered a disciplinarian, and is one of the better offensive minds in the game.
December 30th, 2013 at 5:04 PM ^
like the way he enforces his discipline. And without a alumni base to voice their concerns, I have a feeling he'd steam roll everyone. I don't know...hard to say, but I just like Shannahan better.

Do you really think millionaires are going to allow a coach to bully them?
December 30th, 2013 at 5:11 PM ^
IMHO seems to be better suited towards college where he can be the type of coach he is. Like I said, I can't explain it...I just like Shannahan better and I think Kelly is too much of a hot head. Its just my preference if it came down between them. Of course, I'm not the one making the decision.
And no, I don't think millionaires are going to allow him to bully them, which is why I think its a bad match. Or...more accurately, not the best match.

I would love to see him try to get away with screaming at a bunch of millionaires.

Both are Irishmen. Pale flesh plus rage tendencies equals purple/red/magenta.
December 30th, 2013 at 9:09 PM ^
He's an egomaniac that had a good thing in Denver with a HOF QB...his time is over.
Brian Kelly is also overrated in terms of the NFL. He's not some innovator like Chip, he's not a great pure coach like Harbaugh.
If you're going to go the college route, Bill O'Brien and David Shaw are really the only options right now and neither seem like options for Detroit.

Way too old and was hard to work with in Washington. No thanks.

With some of these names being thrown around I'll be counting Lion's coaching failures to go to sleep tonight.
- Rick Forzano
- Tommy Hudspeth
- Monte Clark
- Daryl Rodgers
- Wayne Fontes
- Bobby Ross
- Gary Moeller - included to list all coaches despite actually having a winning record
- Marty Mornhinweg
- Steve Mariucci
- Dick Jauron
- Rod Marinelli
- Jim Schwartz
I think decent options exist. I have total faith in the Lion's ability to screw this up.
December 30th, 2013 at 7:39 PM ^
Give him a season and his record looks like the other ones.
December 31st, 2013 at 12:35 AM ^
Granted, his career was only seven games but, his career win % of .571 is the best career # since Buddy Parker during the mid 1950s.
December 31st, 2013 at 12:08 AM ^
I'm still wondering how Marinelli got the job. How? Anyone?
December 31st, 2013 at 12:37 AM ^
I dunno, he has the stereotypical name.....
December 30th, 2013 at 9:01 PM ^
but Shannahan seems like a terrible coach. He won his Super Bowl with John Elway and TD.
December 30th, 2013 at 4:50 PM ^
Would be okay with him. Lions will eff it up though.

Hey Little Nicky- You have been a success at the college level, but you were a total failure at the NFL level. Here is a chance to redeem yourself.
On second thought, I'm not sure I can bring myself to cheer for a man that has sold his soul. The funny thing is, a lot of the talking heads on ESPN are saying that the Lions job is the best NFL opening right now. They do have a ton of talent.

Who does ND go for?
December 30th, 2013 at 4:56 PM ^
Al Borges?
December 30th, 2013 at 4:59 PM ^
I'm pretty sure ND is done with hiring overweight offensive mental giants who would be football gods if their players executed on the schematic advantages that they were given.

nicely put

I still think Whisenhunt is the Lions next coach, but if Kelly was offered, I don't think he'd turn it down.

If you do want to cuss say 'fuck, shit, cock, balls'... or whatever comes to mind.
Self-censorship where you write f@ck or B@#$# or whatever is just lame; have the courage of your convictions to spell the word our correctly (it isn't like we don't know what you are trying to say anyway...

That was my first thought as well. The counter to that is pro players make less head-scratching mistakes than college players so maybe he wouldn't have the same ammunition.

I would like to see Shanahan on one hand, as I think that he might be the better fit for Detroit, and his QB coach was high school teammate of mine.
I would like to see Kelly on the other hand, as I am a Michigan fan living in SB and the sweet sweet Irish tears if Kelly left would be fantastic.

He lived in the state of Michigan from ages 25-45. I'd say the usual "home state" rules can safely be applied here.
