OT: Friday Night Drinking Thread

Submitted by ToDefyTheFrizzleFry on

So what is everyone else on the board drinking/listening/watching/etc. tonight? I'm enjoying a Green Flash Green Bullet Triple IPA and listening to Neil Young Live at Massey Hall on vinyl. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to crack open one of the four bottles of Deschutes the Abyss that I picked up today. If you have never tried the Abyss, find some now, hoard it, and drink some and cellar the rest.

Slainte and Happy Holidays to all the fellow Michigan fans!

Watching the Division III National Championship game. Second half and it's 21-14 Wisconsin-Whitewater over Mount Union.

This is the 8th time these two have played in the D3 championship in the last 9 years. I think it's time to move up to D2....

This is amazing, especially since they are both subjected to a legit playoff format and have to make it through a few rounds (3?) before meeting head-to-head.

Any D3 experts out there who can explain how that playoff is seeded?   Regionally?   Nationally based on some sort of rank?

I was surprised to see that UW-Whitewater has over 10,000 undergrads. I know student population isn't directly related to Division, but I was surprised to see a DIII school with an enrollment that large

Upon further research, looks like there are a few bigger like Cal State-Hayward (13k), Hunter College (18k) and NYU (18k) who are also at DIII

I'm drinking two different Christmas Ales. Great Lakes and Bell's. Great Lakes is decent but I'm very disappointed in Bell's this year. It almost tastes like a session beer. Very little flavor from the holiday spices. Seems to almost have a rye character to it. This does not strike me as a holiday beer. Couple that with the sub par performance from Oberon this year and I'm beginning to fear that Bell's is fading in quality.

I Probably will have both wine and beer. I'll post later on to what I had. What happened to the JH to Texas thread? The comments were getting interesting!

Tanqueray Gin with a hint of vermouth, and by hint I mean wave the bottle over the shaker.

Also watching the Div III championship...much less dramatic than the snowbowl between Mount Union and Central.

I am the only one up at the moment actually, so it is Blue Moon with the North Dakota State / New Hampshire football game and some Blue Moon over here. I am also trying to mentally prepare myself for the possibility that my weekend could get interrupted by power company problems if we should start seeing ice-related outages starting tomorrow evening.

I was trying to put it off until February-ish, but I'm in a down time with work and decided to re-watch the first 3 seasons of Game of Thrones starting earlier this week.

Just finished Season 1 and am trying to resist starting Season 2 right now.

Going to mix myself a screwdriver, I think.

box wine and watching Mount Union lose to Whitewater. I was rooting from Mount Union because I've had a number of friends attend class (*note:not graduate from, lol) there, and I always had a good time when I went to visit Alliance. Why anyone stays in Alliance permanently, though, is beyond me.

I've had it once (and very fresh, just 5 days old), and have been dying to try it again. The DIPA that started it all. There are great IPAs everywhere, but California kills it when it comes to them. Sculpin, Double Jack, Pliney the Elder/Younger, Nelson, RuinTen, GF Imperial and West Coast IPA, etc. The list goes on and on.

...those you mention are just the tip. If you get out to SD, you have to try Society. That and Alpine are my fav breweries. Fantastic, aromatic and smooth IPAs. I would almost always take my favs from there over a pliney (love Nelson!). But a fresh Pliney is pretty damn good. Mine was very fresh/1 day from keg. Younger is off the charts.
