Moderator Action Sticky #3

Submitted by Brian on

Hello. The previous mod action sticky was cumbrously long so this is a new one. What this thread is for:

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Update: There's now a Mod Action Sticky IV.

Sorry if that came across as a bit snarky - here's what I should have said:

I could be wrong, but I think threads like this are part of what Brian what alluding to in yesterday's front page posts. For a long time now, threads that try to place blame in general - coaching, recruiting, on the staff here, etc... - just have not gone well in general. Many of them have only helped fuel the flames of the pervasive negativity of late. I might be misinterpreting Brian's intent for the direction of things, but I didn't see a likely scenario where certain folks wouldn't take this into areas where it probably shouldn't go if we're going to keep with the "new tenor", if you will.

What do you consider unacceptable next football season?

Yeah, we need a break fron threads like this for a while. Once again, this is what I took Brian to mean when it came to things which seek to get people in a negative frame of mind, and the OP - in my view - set a negative tone. Maybe this is a little too harsh of me, but I think we all need a mental break from the whole "acceptable" / "unacceptable" / "what needs to happen" stuff.

As with most veteran users with otherwise clean records, I will have an offline chat with them if they are amiable to such a thing. Because this thread might invite similar replies and should probably come down to help make the board "feelings neutral" for now, I will do this too.

More Obnoxious Fanbase - Ohio or Lil' Bro?

This is the thread in question, for the record (and because the bosses want to see such things).

Gus Johnson just called MSU "little brother" on national TV

A little early morning cleanup here - as amusing as this was, this might not be the best meme to have on the board right now, for as some of the comments indicate, it brings up some old gripes with Mike Hart, life, etc...

"Burn the couch" fan sign

Nothing too terrible about this one, but making an executive decision to keep some more generalized content on the front of the board for now. That, and there is now a thread reporting the actual fallout from the win, so if someone wants to repost the picture of the sign, you could probably do so there.

Marcus Hall didn't play. So now what does the MGoBoard say?

Yeah, this should probably come down now that Section 1 is starting to cross the line and get personal with people. I apologize, but it was generally combative in its approach as a thread and I think enough has been said in there at this point that it can come down. I left it so the error could be explained to the OP, and I believe it was done sufficiently - you can't call out the board and then feign superiority. Such a thread will never go well.

Seriously.

I think Brian Cook is right.  To me, the MGoBoard used to be a smarter, more literate, less-lemming discussion forum.  The tolerance levels and the intelligence levels right now are far higher at, say, ElevenWarriors than what we now see on the MGoBoard.

Since I didn't violate -- didn't come close to violating -- any cognizable rule of the Board (apart from the "This is entertainment, for devoted Michigan fans" directive), maybe you could say more specifically what line was crossed and how it was crossed.

Let's summarize:

  • A fair number (three threads' worth, more or less) of the MGoBlogerati predicted that the suspension of Marcus Hall was a sham.  They were wrong.  Some used the occasion to slam Urban Meyer.  I think the new context that I added was more than a fair response to three threads from the last 72 hours.
  • Erin Andrews, on national television, told the audience that Hall had played.  She was apparently wrong.
  • My thread dug up and linked to the B1G participation report.  It seems to have proven something that the MGoBoard really didn't want to believe; that Hall was really and truly supsended for the entire B1G Championship Game.  He didn't play accordning to the sheet.
  • An MGoBlogger challenged the notion of who, really, has ever gotten suspended by Urban Meyer.  I supplied a list of about ten names.
  • Before you took down the thread, someone actually asked me why I didn't call out specific posts from the old Meyer/Hall-ridicule threads.  I had just replied that I thought it best to merely post the links to the threads and let the reader(s) decide.  I chose NOT to single anybody out in that context.

So back to you, mods.  Do you care to explain?  With all due respect, I think you were wrong to take down the thread.

First, to the very best of my knowledge, Brian hasn't said that, so I'm not sure what you're agreeing with.

Second, I'm almost entirely positive that "don't post a look at me, I was right thread and then be combative in the comments" has always been a rule. If not, consider it one from here on out. It's exactly this kind of argument picking, combative and negative posting that is making MGoBoard a tough place right now.

Section 1

December 8th, 2013 at 1:56 PM ^

But now I will.

I think Brian had become weary with a gap that he percieved between certain very frequent posters, and other people who frequently read MGoBlog but who do not post.  I presume Brian regarded those non-posters as intelligent and appreciated readers.  And I regarded, and still regard, my thread as having been worth reading, calling attention to an issue that the national tv broadcast had gotten wrong. Worth reading, in other words, by that silent majority.

I think Brian had gotten frustrated with MGoBoard's flaming of his staff and the others who write content for MGoBlog.  I didn't do that; I don't think I have ever once done that.

I think Brian probably wishes that there were fewer MGoBoarders who write things like "Urban Liar."  Me too.  I didn't ban anyone; unlike Brian, that isn't my business.  All I did was to ridicule the people who did write stuff like "Urban Liar."

None of that self-Q&A using feelings you believe Brian holds has anything to do with why the thread was taken down. It was a toxic OP with toxic comments. We never let those stand, excepting a pretty compelling reason like "it's a post game thread".

And I quote: "...if the people who write for this site hate you we will ban you."

Being antagonistic, EVEN IF YOU'RE RIGHT, is a shitty thing to do. THAT is what Brian has been getting at recently. So, don't do that.

Oh, several people in the thread gave some rather compelling reasons about why it should go, although more by their behavior (this includes you) than by the content of the replies per se. As JGB said, it was toxic, negative and geared to pick a fight with the board. Per Friday's directive, such things will not stand. I left the remarks in the thread, which I then removed. That's the beauty of it.

On second thought, let's not go to East Lansing - 'tis a silly place.

Nothing against the content, but generally, if it is a diary, it doesn't need to be repeated on the board just because there isn't much point in having the content repeated in two different place which are, for now, both on the front page. I realize the board gets more pageviews, but unless the powers that be (or are above me) rule the diary itself to be below the diary bar and move the content to the board, one instance is enough.

2013 goals.

If you're going to post a Michigan / MSU comparison, there are several existing threads that have - through some fault of their own - turned into that, so this is probably better off as a post in one of those for the time being. We really can only have so much of this on the board, and we've reached the cap on it for today.

Mack Brown Forced Out At Texas?

This was the thread from earlier in the day. Now that we know perhaps a little more - a little, very little - we'll let that one stand and let this one go.

ESPN reports UT Coach Mack Brown Stepping Down

Even though the title of the previous thread (still on the first page) presents some confusion due to the state of the Texas situation yesterday, we still do have a thread for the developing news in Austin towards the middle of the front page.

OT: Awesome Coaching Application

This was another piece about the systems integration guy from Marshall who put in an application to be the next head football coach at the University Of North Dakota. It was indeed posted yesterday, but I would love to see this guy actually try to submit formal paperwork.

OT - Kirk Cousins drove the field 80 yards for a game tying (almost) touchdown

The tenor of the remarks in this thread makes me think I missed something that has since been deleted, but in any case, the general level of interest in current Spartans is typically pretty low, much less ones that have moved on to the NFL. This thread might be a smidge over the OT line.

"Maybe you should opt for no comment instead of posting dreck like that here"

"Don't be an idiot".

Not  a great history to boot.

Jim Schwartz resigning as Lions HC /s

The tribe seems to have spoken on this one. Kidding aside, it probably doesn't need to exist on the board unless we need a Lions Snowflake Thread of some kind. Actually, for those of us that are Lions fans, this doesn't seem like a bad idea right now....

Reminder to cancel free trial of 247

I received multiple complaints about the presence of this thread, so to ease relations, it should come down. I understand what the OP was doing, but this is a business decision to help the business, as it were.

There are several member of rival fanbases who post here with varied frequency and do just fine in presenting their point of view. Trolling rules are in effect as always, but as long as folks behave, then there is generally no problem with fans of other teams posting on the board.
