Michigan Offers Sills, Settle

Michigan offered two 2015 prospects over the weekend; one came as no surprise at all, while the other was somewhat unexpected.

The former is five-star VA DT Tim Settle, who had rave reviews of Michigan after he visited for the Notre Dame game; with Hjalte Froholdt going off the board to Arkansas last week, Settle was at the top of the board for available DTs. Settle will have his choice of just about any program in the country, and while the Wolverines made a strong early impression, they likely have some catching up to do now that the likes of Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC have come through with offers of their own.

The latter is Eastern Christian Academy QB David Sills, whose name should be familiar to you for two reasons: first, he notably committed to USC—then coached by Lane Kiffin—at the age of 13; second, he's teammates with U-M commits Freddy Canteen and Brandon Watson at ECA, the football-centric school founded by Sills' father. TomVH notes that there's another Michigan connection here:

Five-star CA prospect Josh Rosen is the only other 2015 quarterback with an offer; while he's recently expressed some interest in a visit to Ann Arbor after previously saying that wouldn't happen, he's very much a longshot. Although Sills hadn't been talked about as a prospect under serious consideration for the next offer, it's clear he's the #2 guy on the board, and per TomVH the coaches will have to wait and see if he's willing to open up his recruitment after the coaching change at USC ($):

According to his father, Sills wants to wait and talk with [USC head coach Steve] Sarkisian before making any decisions or commenting on his status. Sills' father believes it is too early to comment or respond to anything just yet without giving the new Trojans coaches an opportunity to speak with their son.

We'll see where this goes; there's little-to-no precedent for a prospect committing to a program before he's in high school, only for that program to fire the head coach he committed to when the prospect is in the midst of his junior year. Add in Michigan's multiple connections to Sills and this could get interesting.

Commits Taking Visits: The Only Certainty Is Uncertainty

Michigan's already dealing with the whole Jabrill Peppers situation, and now a similar deal is shaping up in the 2015 class, as 247's Bill Kurelic reported on Friday that Shaun Crawford will take an as-of-yet unscheduled visit to Ohio State ($). The Buckeyes, of course, offered the Ohio native just a couple of weeks ago.

Scout's Bill Greene posted an article on Saturday that indicated Crawford was still committed to Michigan and planning to visit Columbus ($):

"I've talked with my family about this entire deal, and we are all 100% sold on Michigan," he stressed. "We want to see how the coaching situation turns out, but we want to respect all the coaches from every school. I'm sure after I speak more with Urban (Meyer) and Coach (Stan) Drayton in the future, that we will go down there for a visit."

Crawford added that the Michigan coaches hadn't "come out and said don't visit Ohio State."

Then came Sunday, and despite not talking to the coaches yet it appeared Crawford was rethinking matters, given the quote he gave to TomVH ($):

"I'm unsure if I will visit Ohio State," Crawford said. "I have not talked to the [Michigan] coaches about it, but I will be in Ann Arbor on Friday and Saturday so we will see."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Four For Four

Speaking of Jabrill Peppers, he wrapped up his fourth state title in four years—two with Don Bosco Prep, two with Paramus Catholic—in a 13-6 championship win over St. Peter's Prep, a program featuring Rutgers RB commit Jonathan Hilliman and 2015 Michigan target CB Minkah Fitzpatrick. Peppers rushed for 68 yards on eight carries behind fellow commit Juwann Bushell-Beatty.

After the game, Peppers clarified his current recruiting situation with Scout's Brian Dohn ($):

“My only planned official visit is Michigan right now. That might be my only visit.”

Penn State, UCLA, and Alabama ("a little bit," in the case of the Tide) are under consideration for other visits; the overwhelming sense right now, however, is that Peppers will stick with Michigan.

East Lake's dream season came to a halt in the state semifinals, meanwhile, as Mason Cole and George Campbell's squad came back from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter only to lose to Dwyer in overtime, 31-24. Campbell hauled in a 65-yard touchdown pass from Artavis Scott during the comeback effort, but it ultimately wasn't enough.

Etc.

The 2015 Rivals100 was updated today. Michigan has all three of the Big Ten's commits to make the cut: Damien Harris (#5 overall, #1 RB), George Campbell (#7 overall, #1 WR), and Shaun Crawford (#96 overall).

Harris mentioned that enrolling early is "definitely something [he wants] to do" in an interview with Sam Webb ($). He's already spoken to Al Borges about that process.

Webb's latest Detroit News article focuses on 2015 MI ATH Brian Cole, who says that the Wolverines are recruiting him for either wide receiver or running back—this is the first I've heard him mention the latter possibility.

Wilton Speight has senior highlights on his Hudl page. He also hosted Brady Hoke for an in-home visit; this is clearly a good time of year to be Brady Hoke.

Crawford's dad posted on 247 a few days ago and said that Shaun will be visiting Columbus, not the school, but for a banquet for the best high school players in the state. Some Ohio state coaches will supposedly be there. He said a lot of things and they all pretty much put to rest the thought of Shaun ending up at Ohio state.

According to Jabrill's latest tweet, he also had an in-home visit with Hoke, yesterday. It seems like things went well based on the photo he posted of them smiling.

Also, that drink looks delicious, Mrs. Speight.

Next year the coaches really need to turn all of this talent into results otherwise I think we may see a drop off in the recruiting. I miss all the boring times this past off season.

OSU ran the ball well against MSU, but that's their bread and butter.  They also have 4 senior OLs, experienced TEs who can block, a senior RB who is one of the best in the conference if not the country and a QB who is a major running threat (and was healthy).

This is not us right now, regardless of OC.  Their offensive personnel is a year or two ahead of ours.  They lose a lot of that though, so next year will be a much more even playing field as far as talent is concerned.

Puzzled by why it took the staff this long to offer Settle (given the other offers he has racked up) and depressed by the Sills offer likely meaning that Borges will really STILL be here next year.  Sigh.

To what degree does offer timing---and relatedly, aggressive recruiting vs. more laid back recruiting--impact a player's decision about a school?

Obviously the coaches should be trying to read the preferences of the players---if they want to be wooed, they will be aggressive.  If the players are getting irritated, then they lay off a bit and do a soft-sell instead.

But to what degree does the ebb and flow of recruiting significantly impact a player's impressions of a school?  For example, it seemed like for most of this year, it was, "We're all about D'Shawn Hand, and yeah Malik McDowell is good....but D'SHAWN HAND EVERYBODY!!!!!"  Now that Hand is heading to Alabama, the full attention is now given to McDowell.  How much does that impact the impression that McDowell might have of the program, versus if we had simply doggedly pursued him as our main D-Line target for 2014?

On the other hand, how much of it is also that we only have so many scholarships to give out, but need to determine the full matriulation rate?  Offers to kids need to be limited in the event that the acceptance rate is higher than normal.  So even though we'd love to have some 5 star uber-recruit, we don't often give them offers if we think there's no chance they'll take it, lest they sit on the offer all year--preventing us from offering another more viable kid--only to not accept the offer?

I imagine it's not unlike regular acceptance letters for prestigious colleges.  Often times, to boost the admission stats, schools won't even accept kids who they know are pretty much going to other schools anyway.

I think the coaches pursued McDowell on the same level as Hand. I think the fan perception might be that there was more emphasis on Hand because of all the articles and coverage directed towards Hand's recruitment.

If the number of available spots was close to 20, I'm guessing we would have seen more offers.

I was wondering what other people on the board thought about offering Sills? I have always been skeptical when it comes to quarterbacks who are only 6', especially in a pro style offense. There doesn't seem to be many successful quarterbacks on the pro level that are only 6'. Edit. I just saw on a couple different sites that he is actually 6'3". That is a good height for pro style quarterback.

I have absolutely watched zero film of this kid, but if a prospect who has been groomed straight out of the womb to throw the pigskin can still be described as "raw" then yes....we need to focus on somebody/anybody else.

After watching the BBR championship game, I say go after Alex Malzone.

im guessing the coaches pursued mcdowell as hard or harder than hand.  seems like he just does not want to be bothered since never does interviews while hand did a ton of interviews via variety of publications....just 2 different recruits with seemingly different personalities and looks like the coaches approached accordingly.  maybe media hyped up hand as UMs 1 and 1a option at DL since he was highly ranked and so high on UM early while reality is they probably recruited mcdowell just as tough and viewed them both as priorities.  and as much as they wanted hand and as desparately as this team needs elite edge rushers, if anything mcdowell might even be more of priority for these coaches since hes in-state prospect at position of need

"this is clearly a good time of year to be Brady Hoke."

I think coming off a Big 10 championship game appearance or heck, a win, would indicate it is a good time of year to be Brady Hoke.  I know you are trying to be cute and all but being relevant in the conference is a bit more important than stuffing face at recruits houses this past week.  I doubt with Hoke's financial resources and position in the university he lacks for good food at any point of the year.  I would rather hear watching his top 2 rivals square off in a very important game the entire nation watched was making this a very bad time of year -  I dont imagine Saban was feeling really great this past week.  I hope there is enough competitive drive in the man that this was one of the all time crappiest weeks for him seeing what was going on in the Big10 CG.  It sure was a bad week for the fan base.

Holy smokes you are negative.  Holy smokes.

Ace can't even say "Hey look at the good food Brady Hoke gets to eat" without you getting all doom and gloom over everything.  I can just imagine someone trying to tell you a joke.  alum96: "Why the hell should I care why two guys walked into a bar?  Probably because Brady Hoke sucks."
