META QUESTION - Beveled Guilt

Submitted by saveferris on

During the portion of this week's podcast where Brian and Ace discussed their dissatisfaction with the general douchiness of the board these past few months, Ace made a passing comment about posters feeling entitled despite not clicking Beveled Guilt (paraphrasing here).

That comment caught me off guard because I haven't seen the Beveled Guilt button on the website for some time and have been under the assumption that MGoBlog has been paying for itself through advertising revenue and HTTV profits.  Is Beveled Guilt still a part of the business plan of MGoBlog or has it been made obsolete by the website growing into self-sustaining awesomeness and profitability?

Just asking because tis the season for remembering those who make our lives a little better by keeping this site up and running.

Of course, the lack of button could be just the fact I'm stuck using IE8 as my browser and it got bugged away.

The button is not in Google Chrome either, or at least not the version I am using. Come to think of it, I don't think it has been on the site for much of this year, although I could be mistaken. Perhaps it was either the server migration or the last tweak of the banner / appearance, but I don't even know if the link exists anymore.

I noticed this also when I went to donate recently. Luckily PayPal keeps a record of transactions, so I was able to simply create a new one from scratch.

just a thought, i would be more likely to bevel my guilt if i had an idea about how much to bevel. i know that its probably just a "pay what you think is cool, whatever, man" thing. but how about a way to do sort of sponsorships like all those corporate jag-offs do? i really have no concept of how much it actually takes to run the site, so when i try to pony up i get all confused and think "that is probably not enough to even matter" so i quit.

When you "bevel" your "guilt", just remember that it's going to be spead between Great Leader and his minions. The last time I beveled, I left it up to Brian how to distrubute the wealth. However, I don't see any reason why you couldn't decide, on your own, how much to give and how it should be distributed.

So, yeah, all you deadbeats out there click Beveled Guilt and throw some money Brian's way so he can:

  • buy his wife something pretty for Christmas
  • give Ace a raise
  • Seth too
  • and some nice stocking stuffers for LSAClassof2000 and justingoblue
  • and something that helps out med students like Heiko (probably money...yeah money)
  • and get voting up and running
  • and the MGoPatio...can I get a hottub?!

Guilt has been beveled.

Also, has MGoBlog ever though about doing a funding campaign like the one UMHoops does every year?  It would probably be a better way to get the word out for donations than the oft-ignored BG button.

I'd rather not meet any of you in real life for the sole reason that my made up internet world as I know it would officially be a sham.  Whenever I see Magnus commenting on something, I envision that he is Brandon Graham just chatting it up here, with LSAClassOf2000, I think I'm talking to a My Little Pony, etc....  My brain seriously couldn't handle seeing you all in your true forms.

I think that the podcast might be an even better platform for the other feature I am in the early stage of developing - "Focus On Facepalms". It would be about the state of the board from a modding standpoint, talk about Bolivia and bans and why those things happen and a few other things. It should make a good occasional diary once I am ready to roll it out, but the podcast would be a fun platform.

You could always look at a subscription model to help with both funding and controling trolling and gener whining.  There could be different levels that would allow things like access to the live blog, posting on game days, posting diaries, etc.  You could leave the blog free to read, but charge a fee to be able to post.  That might help keep some of the whiners away.

you willing to cast the first stone?

I would think one man's dimwit could be another's wisdom...

The moment you charge people you would not only lose a huge chunk of the population here but also change the rules as to what is expected from Brian et. al.

It's hard to guess so I won't, but I will assume the present system is working or it wouldn't be the present system...

of one's contribution should also increase Mgopoints to some degree.  Yeah, I know - most people don't really "care" but it would be kind of a cool way to get some more points and create a small incentive to donate.

I would completely empy my retirement accounts in order to be a Platinum-level MGoBlog member with all the points.   I'm sure I would get the plush leather chair option at any future MGoPatio parties, too.   Sign me up.   And as a bonus, no more snark from the likes of me on this site.  I wouldn't have to post anything to feel egotastic.

When you buy something at Amazon, is it too much trouble to remember clicking on the link at the top of the page?  You will pay the same amount for whatever you buy, no matter how you get there and who gets the commission.  Since you can't buy from your own affiliate account without getting it suspeneded, you might as well use Brian's Amazon button.

The cookie lasts 24 hours IIRC, unless you click through someone else's ad in the interim.  That is a great way to support MGoBlog without spending an extra penny.  And if you want to use the beveled guilt button, it is always there, too.

I find Amazon to be a great way to contribute in a small way to the blog.  Especially during Christmas season, it would be an excellent thing for all of us to remember.  I don't know Brian, but that doesn't keep me from hoping that he gets some nice numbers from 'Zon under his tree this year.
