Mgoblog (Brian) Twitter rant

Looks like bowling didn't go too well

mgoblog @mgoblog 26m

I'm just done with people who are mad at me for reacting how I do to Michigan football. If you don't like it, I don't care

mgoblog @mgoblog 26m

For years I let people talk shit to me because I felt some sort of duty to them because they'd been around a while.

mgoblog @mgoblog 25m

That was a mistake. If you are surprised that I am emotional and moody at this point you are too stupid to care about.

mgoblog @mgoblog 25m

I have taken epic tons of shit for being in a bad mental spot this year; and somehow I managed to feel bad about that.

mgoblog @mgoblog 24m

No more. I'm done taking shit from internet anons because I'm not happy about losing to OSU 9 of 10 years.

mgoblog @mgoblog 24m

I don't owe you a damn thing. Read it or don't.

mgoblog @mgoblog 3m

most people are not reacting like that, but shitheads are louder. this is going to have an effect on MGoBlog.

mgoblog @mgoblog 2m

Your point total is irrelevant to my decisions. If you're making our lives shitty, you're gone

mgoblog @mgoblog 2m

This whole season has been 50% nightmare team, 50% nightmare community. I can fix half of that.

I hope Brian follows through on this. It took me a long time to start posting because I was afraid of how I would be treated if I said something someone didn't like or disagreed with. Some people on here are so ridiculously, unnecessarily rude.

In fact, before opening an account had expressed those concerns to Brian. But b/c, while I'm impressed with and enjoy the level of exchange, analyses, discussions and humor and wanted to engage with the U of M community, my internet literacy is very low made me very reluctant. Therefore, I've watched the ebb and flow of this blog before attempting to post for fear of getting negged or maybe trashed for not only content, but form.

I understand the need for proper form, standards and protocols - but the hiding in a virtual world to condcut personal attacks are beyond counterproductive.

This just too good a communcations platform to engage the supporters of UM athletics in particular and the university overall to mis treat its members/posters.

I don't agree with Brian on everything, but I've had it with the coarse, negative, anonymous, so-called Michigan fans who have made this a much more unpleasant place to be. I absolutely don't mind or care if the blog espouses a different direction than I would choose. Having said that, I do mind when somehow, bloggers make this place unlivable. As Brown Bear said, there needs to be perspective on what's important.

i'd be cool with that.

i'm just not down with the vocal idiotic minority (on either side) spamming the board. the point system really helped with that. seems like fixing that should be a priority in the "offseason."

On the live blog yesterday. I'm guessing our "fuck" count is down this week, unless our positive "fuck" count is way up (e.g., "fuck yeah!"), because the team that played ND showed up.

However, if you think back to RR years, this board stayed civil because of self moderation. Anonymous people behaved like they were in in a public social situation, and the loud drunk uncles were reminded stearnly to behave and if they didn't were thrown out.

So, this was just a bad year for negging to go by the wayside.

So lets

In response to Yeoman, this is Brian's blog. He can do what he wants with it. He can ban people. Chop off heads. Give them negative millions of points. He can authorize the mods to do the same. I actually don't have any particular users in mind, because I try not to remember the idiocy and lunacy and negativity, and who spews it. But I will say that I'm tired of the negative spewing. I like news, and I like coverage, and I like most of the front page pieces. But the comments and some of the posts just aren't fun any more. In particular, I hate personal attacks . . . on Brian, on mods, on bloggers, on athletes, on coaches. I want more discussion about football and basketball and hockey and less of the stuff about firing staff and "changes need to be made now" stuff.

I have been reading since haloscan days. I usually don't agree with Brian on much. But the dude gives us a great product. For free. The board has been awful this year. But some of the front page content this year has been top notch.

Before the username system, the board was run on a much different site design system called Haloscan where we'd all comment in these long threads attached to the specific blogposts. No board, no diaries, etc. You could pretty much use any username you wanted, pretend you were other people, etc. It was all completely anonymous and unpredictable and a total shitshow.

Oh man.  The summer of 2007.  July 2007, specifically.  Really, the days just before we'd all degenerate into where we are today.

For those of you not clicking on that post, some highlights from back then:

- Les Milesis not a candidate for the Michigan job, because his language and cretinous ways would instantly make him a pariah at Michigan.

"It's a place where the next coach will not only need top-tier football coaching and recruiting skills, but a background that shows he can navigate an elite academic institution. It's also a place where hundreds of former players are actively involved with supporting the program. Those players, and Carr, will have a voice at the table."

- Recruiting profiles of Toney Clemons! Darryl Stonum!  Sam McGuffie seems like he's committing to Michigan soon.  Michael Shaw might commit too, but Penn State wants him.

- On the other hand, basketball recruit Draymond Green is going to Michigan State.

Oh, what and where we were back then.

Wow. Yeah, I was reading back then. That was a trip down memory lane.

As an aside, I get why Brian is upset; as someone who's read for that long, and can say that this is the only "online community" I've ever felt a part of. He created this out of nothing, basically, and, most importantly, he's right that he doesn't owe any of us a damn thing. I don't get how and why some posters don't seem to understand that.

I like MGoBlog. I like Brian.

But if he didn't give people the content for free, my guess is he'd make a lot less money from the blog.* (Spoiler: this is Brian's job. As in he earns a living from the money it generates.) It's not an act of kindness to make the blog free.

Should we be grateful that, say, si.com generously gives away so much free content?
