Process of elimination.  I can see only two reasons for a statement like that.

1) Glanville shouldn't take that job because it's a dead-end job.

2) You're just lobbing a grenade at EMU for the sake of being a jerk.

Since I know you have no history whatsoever of posting things just to be a jerk, ever, I'm just sure it's something you of all people would never do, I assumed #1.  Forgive me if I'm wrong and it was actually #2.

I think this is great.  He's no spring chicken but he'll attract some talent to EMU via his personality and NFL history.

I kind of feel bad for EMU, every time I see the stadium on game day there is almost no one there....

I could be wrong, but didn't Glanville have a stint with the Lions in the mid-1970s coaching special teams? I think he spent most of the 1980s with the Oilers as defensive coordinator and then head coach as well. It would be interesting for Eastern to get someone who had NFL experience, even if it was not recent.

How can you go wrong with this recent success?: 

In 2005 Glanville re-emerged as the defensive coordinator under June Jones at Hawaii. He was there two seasons, then took the head coaching job at Portland State, where he compiled a 9-24 record over three seasons from 2007 to '09. Glanville's only full-time job since was as head coach and general manager of a United Football League franchise that folded without playing a game

Glanville is the best. Seriously. 

But Glanville has alienated more than just those he squeezed out. The person who squeezed him out as Oilers coach, Jack Pardee, certainly feels no chummier with Glanville for being called ``a total jerk'' last Sunday after the marathon 47-27 Falcon victory.
Glanville dedicated the game ball to SMU Coach Forrest Gregg, a friend of his. Remember, Pardee ran up the score on SMU 95-21 last year when Pardee was at the University of Houston.
``Some people's egos can't get fed enough,'' Pardee said.

I don't even know what EMU's purpose in fielding a FBS football team is anymore. I can't imagine they're actually making money and they will never have any level of sustained mediocrity.

Seems like they'd be better off at FCS or just a non-football D-I member

Well. that's a pretty crappy reason... those are both better schools, even from a football POV. Wayne State fields a good D2 team that their students and alums are actually proud of and UM Dearborn gives students access to actual Michigan tickets. 

As the lone FCS school in the state, EMU would be very well positioned to compete at that level. They could make playoff runs regularly. That would differentiate them enough and allow their students to actually engage in the team.

Or they could really save money, go non-scholarship, and play in the Pioneer with Dayton and Butler and Valpo.

I think the problem is that either plan would mean moving from the MAC to a non-football conference. Either the Horizon or the MVC might be a step up in basketball but there are fewer sports played in those conferences which I suspect rules them out.

The thing is, they are competitive in the MAC in other sports though.  The rafters at the Rec/IM are full of MAC swimming championships.  They have more than their share of MAC track championships.  Mr. Murphy seems to have the basketball program on the right track (they are currently 5-0 in case anyone hasn't noticed...and judging by the crowds at the Convo, I would say that's correct).  I don't follow their baseball team enough but even that has been decent.  So honestly, I don't see them leaving the MAC or abandoning football anytime soon.

If the rumors are true, I think they've hired a search firm to find a new coach.  That will eliminate the influence of certain regents in the search process.

In order to stay in the MAC, they have one of two options:  keep the football team at Division 1A or drop it altogether.  I can't imagine them doing part II, so they keep the team.  Since they are fairly competitive in the MAC in other sports,  I don't think they want to lose that affiliation.

that being said, they need to not mess up this coaching search.

There is some precedent for this type of move. Usually one would assume anyone who has been a HC in the NFL would not take on a rebuilding job at a bad situation in a non-alma mater school - yet this has happened before. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Saban

He helped set UCF on its D1 course. So it is certainly possible - probably just talke but not impossible.

Two ways to approach this:

  1. From Glanville's perspective, and
  2. From EMU's perspective

From Glanville's perspective it may just be that he wishes to get back into the game in a low-profile sort of way.  He may entertain no illusions of building EMU into anything more than competent.  He may simply be doing it for the love of the game and the opportunity to coach up young players.  If so, then good for him.

From EMU's perspective the calculus is a bit more dicey.  To take on someone like Glanville could signal that EMU views their football program worthy of a placeholder coach only.  That may well be exactly what EMU thinks of their football program, but to imply it so strongly is risky.  On the other hand, if Glanville does pull a miracle and EMU becomes a solid 8-4 type team then when Glanville decides to step away EMU's in a better position to bring in a young up-and-comer.

This would be almost interesting to see. I imagine if he got the EMU job he'd bring in Mouse Davis to be OC, and to be honest, even June Jones isn't running the Run and Shoot any more. And Glanville had a really tough time getting college kids to understand his blitz heavy 80's 3-4 stuff at Hawaii and Portland State. 

But oh well, at least it'd be insane.
