Michigan game coverage in Algeria?

Submitted by jg2112 on

Hey MGoDudes:

I'm going to be doing some journalistic work in Algeria in a couple weeks and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a restaurant or other casual dining spot that will be showing the Michigan - Penn State game.

Thanks.

But, if you could swing by Burkina Faso and pick up a "Trunk Box worth $1,650,000.00 (One Million, Six Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars)" from a "Mrs. Rosemary Campbell" for me, I'd be willing to share with you... Kidding, of course.

Good luck with the work and finding the game.

My slingbox is probably one of the greatest travel gear purchases I have ever made. I travel a lot for work and the slingbox allows me to catch football along with whatever else I want to see. The one suggestion I would make though is to hook it up to a DVR (something I am kicking myself for not doing), otherwise you will be forced to watch everything in real-time. Right now that isn't a problem because I am working nights in Korea (+13hrs EDT) and college football starts at 1am, but in other timezones it could be more of a problem.

Seek ye an Ancients Guild, one to be found in each of the five Old Cities. It will be hidden, and secure, a faceless, windowless building with sandstone parapets, each carved with one of a hundred archaic runes. Entrance can be gained through Catacombs in each city's oldest marked graveyard. Cary with you a flask of goat's blood and 5 silver coins, and make sure every hair on your head is covered with fabric of dark brown or black. You may speak any language, as they understand many, but must speak gutterally, as is their fashion.

Upon entrance, inquire with the first inside guard as to whether the Occulus is available. He will answer no. Wait one half hour, and then return to the guard to inquire again, this time asking at what hour the Occulus will be available. The guard will state a given hour, which actually indicates the number of coins you must bribe him to be taken before the Occulus.

Once in the Occulus' quarters, bow to the run inscribed on each of the four walls, raise your hands toward the rune on the ceiling, and then lower your head to the Seal of the Ancients Guild on the floor, pressing your forehead against it. Then, and only then, will the Occulus appear. Do NOT raise your head, or the guard, looking only at you and wearing blinders, will behead you.

Praise the Occulus wisdom and beg his mercy to see what you wish to see. If he finds your praises worthy, he may help you. If not, God help you.

But I'm going to be stuck in Kuala Lumpur for the first half of the game, and at half time I'm jetting off to Gabon for the second half.

Any suggestions on where I can catch the game? Preferably a coffee shop that allows me to slaughter my own cow and plays BrokeNCYDE on a loop. Thanks bunches.

But I'm going to be stuck in Minnesota for the entire game, and those fucking Geauxfers don't have TVs that aren't GO! FIGHT! WIN! intense.

Any suggestions on where I can catch the game? Preferably a biker bar that allows me to show off my Harley and plays RAWK MUZAK on a constant loop. Thanks bunches.

But I'm going to be stuck in Pyongyang for the first half of the game, and at half time I'm jetting off to Seoul for the second half.

Any suggestions on where I can catch the game? Preferably a massage parlor that offers happy endings and plays Rain on a loop. Thanks bunches.

Algeria? Wow, that is pretty far off the beaten path. You might have to resort to justin.tv or the like.

Edit: Can't tell if this is a joke or not...dammit.

I am going on the assumption that it is not a joke, honestly. I kind of wish the OP would clarify. Call me crazy, but it does not at all seem out-of-whack to think that there are U of M fans travelling to/living in far-flung places who would like to see their team. My buddy who's a fellow alum lived in Bangkok for 2 years and was able to find a bar that would show the games, though he had to watch them in the middle of the night because of the time difference and, apparently, cheering/yelling/showing emotion in public was severely frowned upon in Thailand (his words, not mine- I have no clue personally) so it was kind of an excrutiating experience for him- watching the team and not being able to outwardly express his joys/frustrations. And no, I'm not joking.

Your best bet is gonna be an internet stream. I am Algerian and there is virtually zero following of American football there. You could try the hotels though. The Sheraton there is pretty nice and fairly new so that might have it. Out of curiosity, where exactly will you be and what exactly are you doing? Have a great time, it's a wonderful place!

is about the only place that doesn't scare me. With every journalist disappearing there for the last 15 years like WWII planes in the Bermuda Triangle...I would watch my back. I have been captured in Algeria a bunch of times, but was able to fight my way to freedom.

I'll be on Mars (leaving Thursday). Yeah, that's how I roll.

Amyhoo, what's up? Any alumni bars on the Red Planet? The only thing I'm familiar with on Mars right now is The Face. I'm kinda hoping it's one hellified strip mall, and like the nost is actually a Buffalo Wild Wings or something.

I wonder if the Big Ten network is available on Mars?

I was living in Tunisia last season and am living in Morocco this season, so this concept (while maybe a joke) is not crazy to me.

First, you need access to Armed Forces Network satellite. That is your only hope. They do not have college football at bars in hotels. No freaking way. College football highlights don't even make CNN International. NBA, NHL... maybe. NFL--rarely.

If you work for the Embassy (like me) you get the Armed Forces Network satellite and they show several Michigan games a year (3 last year--Utah, ND, OSU; many more in a good year). If you don't, then you BEFRIEND someone who does. Quickly. Desperately.

I've had some luck watching time-delayed NBA games at sports bars in Sub-Saharan Africa. If you can't find something definite you might just try that. There must be a bunch of places in Algiers that show soccer games and I suppose they might have an American football game. You could even ask a friendly bar-owner if he'll look for it on satelite (I'm guessing that most TV there is on satelite). It might come down to you paying a bit of money to get it on a TV at the bar.
