Hate Mail and Tweets
The Detroit News is reporting that Devin Gardner and a lot of other players are getting hate mail and tweets:
This shouldn't have to be said -- folks, if you find yourself seriously tempted to send an angry message to a player, don't. It won't help them and it won't make you feel any better either. Enjoy the wins, let go of the losses.
If being a fan makes you miserable, you're allowed to just not be a fan for a while. Go ahead, leave the party. Just be discrete about it. If you can avoid making an idiot of yourself on the way out, we'll almost certainly let you back in when the team starts winning again.

because Gardner is to blame for the Oline. It's all his fault... smh
November 13th, 2013 at 2:14 PM ^
our failures on offense have really been a team effort. Coaches, O-Line, QB, RB....
Regardless: Everyone should right now send a kind and supportive twitter message to all football players you follow, especially Gardner.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:41 PM ^
It doesnt really matter whose fault it is, these are college kids and should not be subjected to ignorance of this magnitude over a football game.

Did they not get the memo?
November 13th, 2013 at 4:05 PM ^
Thats why he gets paid the big bucks. Sadly he doesnt take responsiblity for his oc job either.

Maybe a few dozen shots from armored athletic dudes would change their minds.
"I used to send hate mail, but then I took a helmet to the ribs."

UN-FUCKING-ACCEPTABLE

Unfortunately, I don't think this is "new." Appalling? Yes. But this is the new reality with Twitter and other various social sites. Exhibit #1A was LeBron circa 2010 (The Decision) and 2011 (loss to Mavs).
November 13th, 2013 at 2:41 PM ^
The UNIVERSITY got racist hate mail from "proud alumni" who signed their names and graduation years about the Fab 5. This isn't new at all.
It is still sad.
November 13th, 2013 at 6:38 PM ^
You say it's not new and then call it new. Pick a side, homey.

If I recall, Navarre reported getting lots of nasty mail/email when he was a student. We've always had this sort of nastiness in the fan base.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:20 PM ^
No tweets though for Navarre. This is a new low
November 13th, 2013 at 2:35 PM ^
I think Navarre would trade getting a pitcher of beer dumped on him for a Twitter account.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:48 PM ^
Did that really happen?
November 13th, 2013 at 2:50 PM ^
I wasn't there to see if it actually was or not, but I've heard that story multiple times from different people.
November 13th, 2013 at 3:05 PM ^
Back in 2002 (?), a guy I was golfing with hit John Navarre with a golf ball on the UofM course. Sliced it off of #3 tee into the #2 fairway. Plunked him.
It was unrelated to his play, though. It was mostly about my playing partner having a wicked slice.

This is why I gave up my season tickets. The fans were so nasty to Navarre. In 2003 against Iowa he went down and didn't get up. The home crowd cheered. I haven't been back to the Big House since.
November 13th, 2013 at 6:52 PM ^
I had another name on here before and I remember getting ripped on for stating that Navarre got treated way worse than Denard.
I still stand by my comment. That was the all-time worse IMO.
November 13th, 2013 at 7:35 PM ^
Wow, you gave up your tickets for that? I agree Navarre was treated poorly, and undeservedly so, but that's what happens with large groups of fans - some of them will suck and/or be idiots. Not saying you need to get season seats again, but you should come back to the Big House - it's a pretty fun place. And looks way different than when you were there before.
November 13th, 2013 at 10:09 PM ^
That never happened. Considering Michigan played Iowa in Iowa City in 2003.
Navarre got it bad, sure. But inventing an event to justify why you gave up your tickets?
November 13th, 2013 at 2:07 PM ^
I just don't get it. Most of the same people who send hate mail or tweet to him aren't going to say it to his face. It's like being the drunk person who doesn't know how to shut up or, I guess got the "liquid courage" to say mean things to a person's face.

electronic courage...e-courage...new meme....thanks my work here is done.

Yeah...that's embarassing. I wish the mouth-breathers doing that would go be fans of some other team

And Da'Shawn Hand would want to move to AA because...?
November 13th, 2013 at 2:10 PM ^
The sad reality is thatevery team has its share of bad apple fans.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:12 PM ^
I agree that it could happen, but it isn't.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:18 PM ^
But have them lose a game like A&M last year, and watch them all come out, over a team that has won 2 straight titles. Just look at TWIS this week and see the programs that are on there.
November 13th, 2013 at 4:17 PM ^
You have drank way to much Kool-aid...........Get a raise for that one.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:22 PM ^
B) Even if A were true, things could change during the next 4-5 years and one ugly loss at Bama will lead to the same stupidity, C) There are a million other reasons to base a school choice on besides a few stupid fans.
November 13th, 2013 at 3:27 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Bama players got some colorful mail after A&M beat them last year. There's complete idiots in every fanbase
November 13th, 2013 at 2:13 PM ^
We have very passionate fans?
November 13th, 2013 at 2:14 PM ^
November 13th, 2013 at 3:13 PM ^
That percentage is a lot lower than that.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:36 PM ^
I dunno, ND fans are about the worst of the bunch (see: treatment of Tommy Rees) and they don't have too much trouble recruiting. I get your point, but I'm guessing stuff like this is pretty low on a recruit's radar compared to facilities, coaching staff, academics, etc.
November 13th, 2013 at 4:27 PM ^
Tommy Rees kicked a cop. People can dump as much shit on him as they want.

who criticize athletes are ones who do not have an athletic bone in their body or haved lived one significant experience in competition or being on a team.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:14 PM ^
It's probably no one who regularly posts on this site. Despite the out of control emotions and difference of opinions most people are level headed and frankly not that stupid.
I will say the advent Twitter, comments on articles, basically any medium for more people to express their opinions makes me realize how stupid and ignorant most people are. It's truly astounding. You'd think having people having their personal facebook accounts tied to their comments would change that but not a chance.
Carlin said it best
“Just think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are even stupider!”

Haven't been in a Liveblog or a game thread lately, have you?
November 13th, 2013 at 4:29 PM ^
Guessing u dont have to either with all those points, By now YOU should KNOW what is going to happen.
November 13th, 2013 at 4:48 PM ^
People saying, "Nope. Can't be anyone from this site! No way!" are funny.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:15 PM ^
An opposing fan can just as easily pose as a Michigan fan and send him crap.
November 13th, 2013 at 2:15 PM ^
But is anyone shocked? Just look at the boards. And you wonder why they don't give a damn what fans think and don't cater to them in press conferences. Electronic media, in person....
Ross said the players were motivated by the boos, particularly after halftime commentary from senior tackle and co-captain Taylor Lewan. “Honestly, I think that motivated us,” Ross said. “It made us come together. We realized that we’re all we got. We’re a family in this locker room, regardless how the fans feel. We know we’re going to come out and give everything we got for the man next to us, and we can’t expect anyone to give anything to us. We realize that it’s all about us in this locker room. That’s the only ones who are going to have each other’s back through the worst times and the best times.”
