Friday Night Shut-ins The Sequel: What are you drinking?
MGoBoozehounds, it's been seven weeks since last we shared beer recommendations, cocktail recipes and bonhomie. Inspired by DTs and today's discussion of hot buttered apple cider with rum, I ask you again: what are you drinking, and is it nice?
Currently, I'm on a Molson Golden in a 12oz bottle, augmented by a wee dram of Caol Ila 12-year.

Eagle Rare Bourbon, 2 cubes of ice. Not fancy, but a wonderful end to the week.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:29 PM ^
Its funny this thread popped up, I was just about to go the liquor store and was asking myself what I should get. I missed Arthur's day yesterday so I was thinking of Guinness or maybe White Russians. Of course, I'm open to other suggestions from my MgoBoard brethren.

Gentleman's Jack with tonic or coke...or on the rocks.
Over 12 years...take your pick: Gold label, blue label...for single malts I like Highland Park.
For vodka you have to go with Ciroc...distilled from grapes and can be taken straight on the rocks (red bull or tonic otherwise.) I have yet to find another vodka that can lay claim to that. Kettle falls short and Goose is a joke.

Booker's, on the rocks.
Bottled straight from center rackhouse barrels, aged 6-8 years, between 121 and 127 proof. The bourbon to end all bourbons.
Then again it's $55 for a bottle...

Alright, just got back from the store with a 12-pack of Guinness Draught.
Also picked up a 6-pack of the new Bud Light Wheat. My initial take is that it's just a meh, 2* beer.
- It has a orange/amber color to it with a slight haze. Not much for a head.
- Definitely on the light side, it goes down smooth (its bud light, so no surprise there) but lacks in body and flavor. Has a citrus flavor to it, but nothing thats overpowering.
- Still has that light beer mouth feel to it.
- Might appeal to the Bud Light Lime/non-beer drinker sort of crowd but I'll be passing on it next time around.
e-pinion, stick with Blue Moon or Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:57 PM ^
As a fan of Blue Moon, I was gonna try BL Wheat. Now I'm not as excited. Maybe my roommates will like it...they're big BL Lime fans. Gay, right? NTTAWWT.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:15 PM ^
False. Comparing a full bodied beer (Blue Moon) to a light beer (BL Wheat), now that is what is gay.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:28 PM ^
but Arthur Guiness was actually a christian guy who was distraught with the drunkeness in Ireland(shocker)
So he invented a beer that is lower in alcohol content and thicker so that you can't get so drunk(at least not as fast)
The more you know...

Unless you have a better source than I could find on the Internet.
Arthur Guinness brewed porter (the predecessor to stout). Porter tended to be a pretty strong beer, by modern standards. What really drove down the strength of porter and other beers in England and Ireland was taxation. Beer was taxed based on the original gravity, which is a measure of the amount of sugar in the wort (i.e., the beer before it's brewed). It's also the biggest factor in the strength of the finished beer.
I wouldn't be entirely surprised if there were a grain of truth to the story. Gin was introduced shortly before Arthur Guinness began brewing at about this time, and beer (even a strong beer) was weaker than gin. However, a little googling turns up one essay claiming Guinness as a "Christan beer" in a couple dozen places, without any evidence to support the claim. So it doesn't sound like there's a lot to it.
Oh, and I had one of Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPAs.
September 25th, 2009 at 11:22 PM ^
Ever tried their Chicory Stout? Top notch.
September 25th, 2009 at 11:36 PM ^
I'm sure it's good, though, they don't make anything badly. Although not everything is to my taste. I'll give it a try sometime...
September 26th, 2009 at 3:22 AM ^
can't claim to have researched the topic myself, but there is an entire book on this topic.
It is called "The Search for God and Guinness"
Actually, I read the description of the book and maybe it was about the faith of the Guinness family, which may have had nothing to do with his beer brewing.
Either way, I will be enjoying my guinness tonight.
September 26th, 2009 at 10:50 AM ^
Like I said, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a grain of truth in there. If there is, though, I suspect it was intended more as good advertising than anything else. This is a beer that was advertised as being healthy for decades...

Down on vacation in Florida, so I'm drinking Yuengling, aka Vitamin Y.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:34 PM ^
If in the Tampa area, look for Cigar City Brew. It's a new local brewery. Excellent.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:31 PM ^
I'm having a Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Yum.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:35 PM ^
My personal favorite non-imperial oktoberfest. I like the light, sweet, American version over the heavier malted German oktoberfests.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:38 PM ^
but it is a very solid brew.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:02 PM ^
I'm not generally a fan of New Belgium's stuff, but this one impressed me.
September 25th, 2009 at 11:26 PM ^
Have you ever tried Flat Tire?
September 26th, 2009 at 8:36 AM ^
No, I have never had Flat Tire, but Fat Tire is considered to be one of the most overrated beers in many beer circles.
I personally like it, but I know quite a few people that consider it very meh. The same could be said of my Shiner Bock.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:23 PM ^
I concur. I tried the hoptober last night and enjoyed it. Also, I got drunk.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:34 PM ^
Glad to see WildcatBlue back around. I picked me up a 6 pack I had never tried before. Paulaner Salvator, a double/doppel bock. I'm waiting a bit closer to kick off (Mizzou @ Nevada thread to be open soon) before I start getting too involved.
Trying to finish this post about Bud Middaugh before I get too buzzed, too. His story pisses me off greatly when drunk. Michigan's first ever NCAA sanctions.... rabble rabble.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:36 PM ^
are in good company, its a very solid double.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:53 PM ^
Just opened it up. Wish I had a goblet, as I think that'd be the correct glass for it now that I taste it. It's just strong enough to give you that chill all the way down that you get with the strong beers. Delicious.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:15 PM ^
Man, this thing is hitting me quick, too. It's only ~7.7%, but it's hitting me like a 18 pack of bud light right now.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:24 PM ^
I'm one beer in and I already know I won't make it past half time of this game. I have neglected quality beer for too long.
September 25th, 2009 at 9:20 PM ^
As evidence, went to oven a pizza, didn't check the oven. there was some spill over from the last night. just filled the place with smoke. dammit.
September 25th, 2009 at 9:27 PM ^
is that you'd be disinclined to fight a fire with fancy beer. On the bright side, smoked mozzarella is nice.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:40 PM ^
A long vacation in the UK is a great thing except when it interferes with the opening weeks of football season. I'll have to start a list of all the great bocks you've brought up. This one sounds delicious. I still haven't managed to find any of the Shiner you were drinking in the last thread.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:34 PM ^
champagne...always champagne
September 25th, 2009 at 6:36 PM ^
too old and too hungover from last night.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:36 PM ^
straight scotch. Laphroaig 10. Nice.
Sadly, I'm watching Gray's Anatomy with the wife on DVR now. That sucks.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:45 PM ^
that whoever negged this was left at the altar or hates Zach Braff, because Laphroaig is nothing but positive.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:19 PM ^
Just goes down too easy the night before a 20 mile run. Bourbon has a little more "bite" eliminating one of the sources of pain tomorrow.... Of course, Scotch is the order of the day after the game. BTW, I would never Neg someone for drinking the beverage of their choice, even if thought it was a poor choice.
September 25th, 2009 at 9:53 PM ^
I'm saddened, but understand that I should be drinking beers. It's not game day, but if it were, I'd have beers.
September 25th, 2009 at 10:15 PM ^
My wife is also watching Gray's Anatomy. That show makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
Fat Tire amber ale for me, but might switch to the Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey in the second hour of this blasted show. Fine stuff it is.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:38 PM ^
I kid you not.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:00 PM ^
Is it any good? Saw it at Kroger the other day and almost bought some...
September 25th, 2009 at 8:55 PM ^
I really think so. It's $6.99/6-pack @ Busch's, IIRC. Not very heavy, a subtle citrus tone, quite drinkable. It's local -- brewed and bottled in Webberville. And, well, ya gotta love the name.
Got a half-barrel of it from Morgan & York (on Packard, used to be Big Ten Party Store) last winter. The Spouse and I really enjoyed it, draining the barrel in about 3 weeks.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:43 PM ^
....but I'm on my 2nd Heineken.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:03 PM ^
I'm still at work and am looking at another 4-5 hours minimum.
I guess you could say I'm drinking bitters.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:43 PM ^
But when I do, it'll probably be Bruichladdich Infinity scotch.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:11 PM ^
I just totally read your post in the voice of the "Most Interesting Man" from those Dos Equis commercials. "But when I do..I drink Dos Equis"
EDIT Sorry just saw comment below
September 26th, 2009 at 12:33 AM ^
Backed off the Bruichladdich, and went for a 13 year old Gordon & Macphail Mortlach 1994 single cask vintage.
September 25th, 2009 at 6:44 PM ^
Will probably have a few beers or some hard cider for the 9pm Mizzou/Nevada game.
September 25th, 2009 at 10:06 PM ^
a Horsby's Crisp Apple Hard Cider.
