META(?): The Epic Threads thread

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Not sure if this qualifies as META, but let this thread serve as the thread that people link famous/long/ranty/funny-that-it's over threads.

Example: McFarlin, RR rants/wars, Down In Front(!) wars.

Like last week's "Worst/Craziest Sporting Event Experiences" thread, I need a good laugh.

Or some of your favorite and funniest threads you've posted in.

There are two that are actually in the Hall Of Fame that I remember posting in - these threads took on a life of their own very quickly. Specifically, the "Mike Jones" thread and the "Jersey Sales in Ohio" thread from 2011 - if you've never seen the latter, that is the origin of the "I think Hoke has turned the tide on the rivalry..." line, as I recall.

Because regardless of how funny and harmless a thread can be, there is always someone out there who'll think it is stupid.  I've been amazed how the most non-offensive posts around here can devolve into heated debates if given enough time.

that was not a fun period for all involved...The CoY were extra grumpy. I thought the hockey team should be commended how they finished and not completely folding.

That blowup was mild compared to my old screen name wolverine318 which is still in Bolivia. I had a major blow up when I moronically called out a commit after they dropped Michigan.

I think in general it's because Michigan almost always has a top 5 recruiting class (as hard as that is to quantify in NCAA hockey) and then we end up losing 4-1 at home to Lake State or something. Feels like Alabama losing 20-7 at home to UAB, whether that's actually accurate or not. I think we just expect to blow the doors off most teams which isn't quite realisitc

I was irritated because my wife walked up behind me on the blog right when there was an image of a kid giving the "pimp hand" to a woman in a bikini. She wasn't pleased. So later I posted the above linked "no boobie/NSFW/Home" request. All the comments are locked and not viewable. But there were plenty of (graphic) images and gifs in response to the request. I watched and read in horror, realizing that I would have been better off just sending an email to mgoblog, or saying nothing. But putting up a post on a Saturday night was a big mistake. The thread quickly took on a life of its own. There was also a followup thread the next day, which I don't know how to find. In retrospect, it was hilarious, and a great illustration of thinking twice before putting up a post.

To me it begins and ends with this thread:

I always wind up laughing until the tears come when I read this one. Also, remember when Chitown was BOTH a cantankerous old cuss AND had a hilarious and self-deprecating sense of humor?

Where have you gone, Chitownblue2 /

MGoBlog turns its lonely eyes to you /

Oh man, thanks for that. Had me cracking up, probably more so than when I originally read it. Really miss the WLA hegemonic elite. Much funnier than most of the current mgoblog hegemonic elite.

I remember a time when I checked WLA almost as frequently as mgoblog. Very curious to know what's become of those guys (who no longer post on here), and what went down between them and Brian (though if that's personal shit, I can respect that).

I wish to complain that epic board meltdowns like yesterday's high drama are not convenient for those of us 3 hours behind.  I missed all the good stuff until it was too late to contribute to the meltdown, or even follow what the hell happened (what the hell did happen?).  I'm out here in SF Bay area talking to myself on most late nights.

In short, I hate it when I miss the good stuff.  This is the worst thing that's happened since I was out of town and missed the whole RDT scandal.

The 9am kickoffs for college and 10am kickoffs for NFL has been phenomenal.  Sunday and Monday night football over by 9pm.  I can never go back to waiting around all morning for games to start-- that seems post-apocalypse to me now.  The living envy the dead.

But I do miss the ability to jump into a good MGoBlog meltdown in real time.  Just don't get home early enough.

Generally means anything that's one abstraction back from a concept. So, for example, one might study language, or meta-language, i.e., study languages as a whole (e.g., what are the elements of a language, how did language arise, etc.)

Holy crap. That "treat recruits with respect" thread has to be up there. I missed the entire thing when it was happening, but just spent the last hour and a half reading through it. For those who also missed, here's the tl;dr version:

  • Brandon posted an interview on Monday with 2016 recruit Teryn Savage. Being a recruit who was originally from the 2017 class, but skipped ahead a year to be in the 2016 class, he is young. His appearances (despite being a very large 6'2" 180) reflect his youngness.
  • Many people took umbrage with this. Many people did not take umbrage with this. These people fought with each other.
  • Teryn took umbrage with some of the comments about him looking young.
  • Brian responded with the "treat recruits with respect thread" saying that we should treat recruits with respect.
  • Many people took umbrage with this. Many people did not take umbrage with this. These people fought with each other.
  • Teryn created an account on MGoBlog specifically to respond to this situation, and basically said "it's all good bro! LOL no harm no foul."
  • Chitownblue2 got banned.
  • JimBobTressel posted a fitting cat gif:

The whole thread is really worth the read. It's fascinating. And if nothing else, the cat gif is kind of like the reward toward the end for reading through all those comments.
