UConn OC T.J. Weist (former UM WR coach): "Whole new set of playcalls...for Michigan"

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Apparently UConn football fans placed a lot of hope in new OC T.J. Weist this year.  Not going very well thus far, but interesting interview here from The Hartford Courant:

"I'm just like any player who doesn't make a play," Weist said. "I have to evaluate, did I make the right calls at the right time, what do I have to adjust to? I've got a whole new set of play-calls, a whole new set of situations coming for Michigan so I have to say, how am I calling plays? Am I calling them fast enough? Are they clear enough, are they adjusting to the defense the correct way. I think we're coming together as an offensive staff, as a full staff, me getting to know all the guys, how we handle game situations and my players."

Also interesting - T.J. Weist was a former wide receivers coach at Michigan from 1990-93 (see back row).

Michigan was blessed with some impressive WR talent during that period: Desmond Howard, Derrick Alexander, Walter Smith, Mercury Hayes, etc.

"It was an honor being there, to be a part of that tradition whether it was playing Ohio State, playing Notre Dame, being a part of those great rivalries, they taught me a lot as a coach, so sure it's special," Weist said. "I'm coaching against friends and one of the better teams in the country and one of the best programs, if not the best program in the country. None of that matters. We still have to go out and win."

It's cool that he's a former staff member, but the bolded part sounds hilarious in context.

"We're going away from the stuff we suck at and have a whole new batch of stuff for Michigan that we probably haven't practiced nearly as much as the stuff we suck at."

I think you're close.  The way i read it was "we're going away from the stuff we thought was good but apparently we suck at and are going to start trying the stuff we thought we sucked at for Michigan."

Why do they need to change anything? A vanilla pee wee offense would probably rack up at leat 400 yards through the air, with Raymon Taylor desperately trying to catch up to the 8 year old that just scorched him down the sideline.

Going back to last season, I think Taylor has been something of a pleasant surprise. Teams (such as ND) actively try to pick on him, but he seems to acquit himself well, from what I remember seeing of him.

Last week's game seems pretty out of step with what he's shown so far, in my opinion.

yes, to have the opposing coaches doing whole new schemes just to play you makes me nervous. After last week, I am truly worried about the night away game.

It's become clear that Michigan's youth is going to be a factor this season. Simply put if they don't respect an opponent, and they don't get their heads in the game, they aren't going to play well.

Is the team that young, though? The QB is a 4th year player, the 1 and 2 WRs are both seniors, both tackles are 5th year seniors, the center is RS sophomore, the starting RB is a 5th year senior. The defensive line is fairly veteran (at least the starters), LBs have plenty of playing time under their belts, and all 4 starting DBs have some degree of playing experience before this season (3 as starters).

Why, they are practically old men like me. They should be wearing leather helmets and swearing at the TV when they screw up, like I do.

I want to hear them scream, "You call that football?" when they miss a tackle. I want the entire team issued remotes that they can throw at the field when they blow a play. I can coach them on how to properly throw a remote. You get a bunch of remotes thrown at you when you're on the D line wearing a leather helmet, it's going to get your attention.

And I want them to have a couch like mine to sit on between plays, not a wooden bench. No wonder they're having bad games.

And when the coach calls a bad play, I would really appreciate it if the scoreboard would light up with "What were you thinking when you called that play, Bonehead?"

Then we'd see some football.

I've got a whole new set of play-calls, a whole new set of situations coming for Michigan.

am i the only one reading that as "michigan runs a different defense, so my play-calling will be different"?

It could be M's defense.  But it also could be more along the lines of what I think BaldBill is saying: they've had this game circled for awhile as the game they are pointing to and saving some plays they haven't revealed yet.

That sort of thinking does come with the territory for a program like Michigan.  For many schools, almost no matter what else happens over the course of the season, a victory over Michigan makes their season a success.

I'm not anymore concerned now than I was 15 minutes ago. They appear to just be a bad team. Unless they're going to run 1000 trick plays, I'm not sure there's any reason for new concern

"We know that you know that we know that you know what plays we are going to run...."

This strategy either pays off (if our D is incapable of adjusting... Which is the opposite of any Mattison defense) or their players trying to run foreign plays will lead to confusion and 3-and-outs.

I see this not working for them

What could he really do that different? Is he suddenly going I back formation? Good luck with that. He must be talking about play calling situationally. Otherwise it's just spread out of different formations.

The playcalling will be far less a factor than the decision (or non-decision) that Michigan makes:

Today, will we be predators or prey?

Predators kill swiftly and efficiently. Lions don't toy with baby antelope. Every kill is swift, merciless and efficient.
