Is #98 the new #1?

Submitted by Blue and Joe on

I'm in the market for my first ever Michigan football jersey. Ever since I was a kid I wanted a #1 jersey (because of David Terrell). Now they don't really use that number, or even sell that jersey (except for a few places).

I'm wondering if the #98 jersey will become the new #1. Each year it will be given to the best player. Potentially you could always have the jersey of the best player. I guess it's hard to say how often they will give it out. If all else fails it's still a Tom Harmon jersey.

EDIT: ONE OF the best players. Better?

I think most of you all missed the best topic for discussion in the thread, that being whether the #98 jersey should be more coveted going forward than the #1.  First, Tom Harmon was clearly a better player than Braylon and even Anthony Carter.  Is Devin the best player on the team?  Who cares.  The interesting part is whether or not Michigan could change and get out from under what I call the the "Braylon Edwards taint" on the #1 jersey.  IMO Braylon ruined the mystique of the #1 and 'ole #98 could easily become more coveted.

The analysis as who deserves to wear the #98 jersey should not be based on who is the "best" player it should be based on who is "most valuable" and its clearly Devin this year.

IMO, maybe because I'm a bit older and know a bit more history, the #98 has always been more hallowed.  In fact, if I recall correctly, no one wore it until this year, right??

The fact that people first think of Braylon Edwards when the topic of the #1 jersey comes up makes me both laugh and cry inside.  It just goes to show you how well his efforts to make it about him have succeeded.

If there's one thing I can absolutely count on no matter what is the concern we have over freaking numbers on this board.

Other things that cause concern:

1. Volume of band

2. Song selection of piped in music

3. Student attendance

4. Jersey numbers

5. Funches's blocking prowess

6. Bubble screens

As long as Braylon Edwards has control of the number one jersey, Nobody will ever wear it again. I wish the number one scholarship could end so that we could see the most prestigious jersey that a Michigan man can wear once again.

Just buy whatever jersey you want.  Who honestly cares about the number; with any one, you'll have some greats and some stinkers involved.  It's just a number.

The #1 jersey belongs to the best WR on the team as well as one the team leaders. If the #98 jersey does become a legacy number it's should go to the teams best playmaker overall whether it be offense, defense, or both. The #2 should go the best DB and team leader, and #21 to the most dangerous offensive player. Maybe #76 and #77 should go to best OL and best OL and team leader.
