The problem is its hard to get loud for a game like this because in the back of your mind you remember this is Akron, and anything good should be expected, and why should you betting excited for eeking out a win against Akron?

Whether true or not, there is a huge negative perception about the GA tickets and students never want to wait. I don't blame them, but te negative reaction is going to cause a lot of people to come late and to skip games. Not sure if it will be better or worse, but when you add a bad opponent at noon, it's just going to happen.

Why? Because GA doesn't so anything to address the root of the problem, which are people that care nothing about football buying season tickets so they can tailgate

You can scoff at the ''this generation isn't as dedicated'' stuff but it's 100 percent true. And I'm a part of it (not a student but I wouldn't miss any Michigan game unless it's something EXTREMELY important (cousin's wedding next year is on homecoming...dammit). I weep for the future of Michigan Stadium with the combined effort of Dave Brandon pissing everyone off and the lack of dedication from this generation.

your claim is all heresay. Is it not possible that a fewer percentage of the students bought tickets in the past? These days, the way they promote it during high school visits, orientation, etc. they practically require that everyone buys tickets - even those who have no interest in football whatsoever.

Easy solution.

Sell alcohol at the games. They used to back in the day. For a game like today, its like you party for three hours and then going to church. The lines, the rules, singing. Games should be raucuous, not soul crushing.

Have you been to an NFL game? Like, a real one, not a Ford Field game? I've been to Lambeau, Lincoln Financial in Philly, Baltimore and old Giants stadium. The atmosphere is terrible, due mostly to astoundingly drunk assholes starting fights and being vulgar and violent start to finish. I am not a fan of selling alcohol in football stadiums, that booze flow needs to be cut off before kickoff.

You can't sell alcohol at University-owned stadiums. Which is why you could drink at the Metrodome, but not at Minny's new stadium.

And nothing says dumpster fire game management situations like selling beer at a game with 10,000 underage kids trying to pass their fake ID's at the concession stands. You could go Village Corner (RIP) rules, tack up the fake ID's, and wallpaper the outside of the scoreboards at each of the stadium each season.

And there are people paying just to be on a waiting list and these twits are doing this shit.

I don't care if you're playing Ann Arbor Pioneer, you get your ass in the stands. The classes before you filled the stands for games against Rice and Long Beach State!

Pisses me off. Fuck this whole day.

they can get tickets to games vs. Akron. The student ticket allotment did not deprive anyone of a ticket for this game who wanted to go. In any case, the system would probably work a lot better if student ticket packages weren't all or nothing.

This is my first year as a season ticket holder since grad school. It cost me $1000 to transfer tix plus $1,200 for a seat license + ~$1,000 for tix this season. I couldnt sell these tix (sec 44) for $40. In reality, they cost me $500 for the pair. The only reason to show up is to tailgate ($50 to park close) The pricing model is broken in a huge way. Within 5 years we'll only bevselling out the big games. I don't blame the students for not showing up for this game.

when I was in college my school mostly 3 pm or 6 pm starts. I hated when they had an earlier than start. Maybe students dont like the early kick off

are all "dynamic seating" non-student seats, and they're empty too. Those late-arriving students weren't the only ones who didn't feel like going.

I really hope none of the people complaining about the students not showing up live in southeast Michigan, because if so, you could have easily made it to this game yourself.

It is the upper portions of Sections 33 and 34 that are sold as single-game dynamic pricing tickets, right?  Not 28, 29 and 30.

Moreover, the dynamic pricing tickets may not have been sold; I don't know.  Big difference between empty seats having not been sold, and season ticket-holding students not showing up.

Just a thought but what would be the downside of banning entering the stadium after a pre-determined time.  Say something like 10 minutes into the 1st quarter? So maybe in real time 20-25 minutes after game start.  i.e. be there by 12:25 PM or you can't come at all?  I am picking an arbitrary time, maybe it should be 12:15 PM or whatever but is there a downside I am missing to that?  It would encourage students to be in the stadium at worse halfway through the 1st quarter... doesnt seem punitive.

High Holy Days, Akron, noon start, unhappiness with wasting time in line at previous games all seem like valid reasons for the student section to filll slowly.  It did look a lot more full by the 2nd quarter.  On the other hand, the east side club level seats looked to be more than half empty the entire game.  Why isn't anyone upset that the folks shelling out those kind of bucks can't be bothered to show up at all?

Those top 2000 seats that used to be student section were dynamically priced by the AD at $65, because the AD wants to take some of the money from the secondary market, but won't sell tickets below face. Until dynamic pricing truly matches the market, those will continue to go unsold for games like this.

Killewis

Yeah, its funny how dynamic pricing is pretty convienent when the market value is way above face value, but of course when you schedule games no one wants to go to and the market value falls way below face value, face value pricing works just fine for the AD.

I'm a senior and I have never missed a game. Left quite a few early but never missed one. Having said that, this response is embarassing. It is not the responsibility of students to attend football games, it is their choice. A large percentage of the students who attend games are Jewish... today was a Jewish Holiday. There was a major music festival 30 minutes away that several students attended. We were playing a team with a 3-33 record the past three years the week after a major game. A general admission policy that is operated so poorly that students who waited for over three hours before the game enjoyed a similar wait once they were allowed in made a borderline game a pass for many. There are things in life that are embarassing, disgraceful etc., but some late arriving students does not qualify. It's not why we played why we did. Nobody gives a shit. Get a life.

Actually, there are a lot of people who care that the students come on time - including the players and coaches on the team.  It hurts our homefield advantage to not have students there when we kick off.

If you've bought tickets, make the effort to get there to cheer your classmates playing on the field. A lot of guys on the team were really excited to see all the students there early for the CMU and ND games - it means a lot to them.

I understand that,, and am actually on the student's side here, but I think the problem most people are complaining about here is that by the end of the half, the student section was pretty close to full, meaning students showed up, they just didnt show up on time. I'm guessing the Jewish holiday didnt make anyone an hour late.

goblue'14

fair, but the GA policy either motivated students to show up early, or in the case of a game like Akron, causes them to say fuck it well show up when we dont have to deal with it. but by bigger point is that when the students arrive for a game against akron should not be the concern of a bunch of grown men (and women).

M-Dog

September 15th, 2013 at 12:03 AM ^

You have a good point about GA.  It either makes people show up early: the diehards that want to sit up front, or it makes people show up late: the people who know they are not going to get a prime seat anyway so they just wait until everything clears out.  It's lousy for getting everybody to show up on time.

Kinda funny today. The whole game until the fourth quarter everyone was sitting down. Halftime came and everyone stood up for the band?

And the B1G wonders why I have to listen to SEC fans in TN of all places talk shit. Team played awful, crowd was awful, embarrassing to say the least.

Can't believe I had to apologize at a football game for standing up.

Which should be a concern to all programs, because they have a great setting, a great stadium, a great atmosphere, and traditionally a great program. I went there twice a decade or so ago, and the entire state's level of devotion to Vol football was startling.

That they've scrubbed away all that goodwill and much of their paying fanbase is stunning. Every major football program should be worried about it.
