"They had really bad players" - Mack Brown referring to GERG coached Michigan defenses
ahahahaha.
ahahaha.

Fortunately for GERG, he has proven players at Texas who have shown they are capable of protecting against the run.

Oh Mack. You really have no idea what's coming do you?
September 9th, 2013 at 7:08 PM ^
On the contrary, I think he knows excatly what's coming, which is why he's in full on desperation mode. You don't fire your DC in favor of an average-at-best DC 2 games into the season unless your seat is on fire.

Well, I'm condeding that GERG had success at other coaching stops, and you can't completely ignore that.
September 9th, 2013 at 7:29 PM ^
As much as I hate saying bad things about RR him forcing his DCs to play the 3-3-5 was a major mistake. As if Gerg wasn't mediocre enough, i also think that RR made a mistake throwing Schaffer under the bus after his first season.

season at Texas (co DC) prior to going Syracuse. Before their bowl game, Texas gave up 3 second half points all season. I thought we landed a Mattison/Tenuta type of DC when we got Gerg. Clearly, I was wrong. Also, clearly, Gerg likes to rub my face in it. And by "it" I mean a stuffed animal.

Tony Gibson as our DB coach didn't help either. RR certainly contributed to the problem. Still, you have to go back to 2004 to find a Gerg defense that wasn't a disaster.

Thanks -- I had not seen that from Martin. Confirms my general sense that Robinson's main problem on the college level is that he doesn't know how to teach. He was especially lost at Michigan when he was asked to teach a defense (3-3-5) that he wasn't experienced with but, honestly, THAT'S NO EXCUSE.
I taught a course last year in an area of my field I had never taught before. It was a bitch. I worked constantly just to stay a week ahead of my students. But in the end I survived and when I do it again next year it will be the best course in my rotation, because it is so up-to-date.

He ran the 3-3-5 for two years here. Even if Gibson sucked, he had a staff of assistants using to running it. One would think he had time to learn it if he wanted to. Perhaps as a young coach he would have.
September 10th, 2013 at 12:31 PM ^
And got his contract buy out to keep his mouth shut. All you have to do is see his final press conference where he sarcastically talks about taking all the blame.
And there were always the rumors that he said he'd do that if Rich would just admit to him that Gibson was the worst position coach alive.
September 9th, 2013 at 9:50 PM ^
The biggest mistake with DC's was Martin and then Brandon not giving RR enough money to hire Jeff Casteel. And wasn't it Brandon who decided on GERG?

His mishandling of the defense is what cost him his position here. If he had let Shafer run his scheme with his own assistants, he might well have still been at UM today. He might have even still been around if he had let Robinson run his scheme.

Brown has seen the writing on the wall for a couple of years now. People are pretty much over Vince Young and Coly McCoy; this team has been pretty average for a couple of years now. It would be great with hiring GERG turns out to be another coach killer of sorts.
September 9th, 2013 at 9:40 PM ^
I don't think he's referring to the possibility of losing his job when he says, "You don't know what's coming." He's referring to Mack not realizing how horrible GERG is going to be.

I am ABSOLUTELY LOVING THIS down here in Longhorn Nation. Everyone is all excited until I drop the GERG bomb on them, and tell them to go look at all of GERG's work.
Mack Brown will be fired in 4 months - BOOK IT!

This hiring is as questionable as MSU's of Bolman.

Unfortunately, we won't have a chance to play Mack, GERG, nor the Beaver this year; as none of them will see the National Championship game unless they pay for a ticket.

This appears to be a half glass full, best case scenario here. I don't think the Gerg hiring will go this well.

Exactly. Tell Mack to also check how those same players ranked in scoring defense the next season. I think they jumped a "few" spots.

We had plenty enough talent to field a competent defense. They're just going through the 5 stages of GERG
- Optimism Mixed with Feeling of Doom
- Delusion <--- Texas be here
- Sadness
- Misery
- Acceptance of the Terrible Thing You've Done

Knowing how aggressive UT alums can be. The probability of seeing Mack, GERG, and the Beaver on the Texas sidelines in 2014 is zero.
