OT - Detroit SI Cover
While listening to 97.1's Karsch and Anderson today in my car on a work related errand, I heard that next week's SI cover will be centered on a story surrounding the Detroit Tigers and the city of Detroit. I couldn't listen to much and the issue hasn't been released yet, but I'm guessing that the said story will be centered around the obligatory great recession era "Detroit sports team gives the city something to hope for" story line.
It's interesting to me that they're jumping the gun on this for two reasons. And they are as follows:
1) The Tigers haven't even made the playoffs yet (and are in danger of not making it.) Wouldn't this story be better saved for down the road when this city (I live in Detroit) experiences some type of playoff fever?
It might just be me, but I don't really feel a huge buzz surrounding this team right now - Which might be attributed to the cautious fan approach - Do you guys sense the same thing as me? It's definitely not like the MSU NCAA Tourney run....
2) As a Tigers fan, do you think this now puts a jinx on our chances to make the playoffs? Not that I believe in those things, but I wish SI would've waited.....especially with our recent record against Minnesota haunting us

After reading the article, which was great, I can say this - I'm a 26 year old college grad who ended up staying in Detroit, even after all my friends (really, all of them - they moved to the Michigan borough of Lincoln Park, Chicago) left....articles like this make me feel good about my city.
I think about leaving every day, but every day I'm reminded that Detroit is just as special as Chicago, NYC, LA, Miami etc.

Apparently, there's a push by all of the Time Inc. properties (Time Magazine, CNN, SI) to look at various aspects of Detroit. Here's a link to why they did it, and a bunch of different articles, including sports as well as the local economy. The Tigers aspect is that they still spent money on players with the bad economy.

With the way the Tigers have been choking...err I mean playing lately I would be surprised if their lead sticks. Bring on another long off season.

I agree that there's not a huge buzz about the Tigers, probably because their record isn't that great. Most years, a team like this wouldn't make the playoffs. Still, if they do make it, it'll be a nice story.

Yep, exactly. Even in 2006 the buzz wasn't that strong until they won a playoff series... if it isn't an '84 style run, this city isn't excited.

Hey, I feel ya on the staying in Detroit topic. I am a recent grad and am now pursuing my master's degree in accounting. I chose to sign with a CPA firm in Detroit while literally every single one of my good friends in accounting has chosen somewhere "cool" like Chicago, NY, etc... It's kind of depressing but I am glad to be in Detroit! I hope it pays off in the long run.

I'm with all you guys on the staying in Detroit thing. I'm at grad school in Nashville right now and can't wait until I can move back north of the Mason-Dixon line for good and get back to all the things that are sweet about Detroit.

Being from Grand Rapids I have never really been to the Detroit area for anything other than Tigers and Lions games. I hear that Royal Oak is a pretty fun place to live if you are a recent grad; any of you guys back that up? Any other areas you would recommend right outside Detroit?
